Trying to re-focus

Saturday, April 17, 2010

Right after Easter, I lost my focus and gave in to old habits. It is taking so much work to get the scale back down to where it was before. I am really trying hard to focus on my goals again. I have lost several pounds of what I had regained but have a couple more to go. I have worked out really hard this week in the water, on the elliptical and even participated in a Zumba Gold class! I have watched the regular Zumba classes for some time while on the elliptical and knew they would be too much for me with my neck, back, arthritic problems and hip replacement. I was so happy when I saw the Zumba Gold class they were offering for seniors, people with replacements and others that need a slower pace. The class was lots of fun and the instructor was awesome. She broke everything into smaller segments that were easy to follow and perform. I am looking forward to the second class this coming Wednesday.

Today I had my best ever 65 minute elliptical workout. My strides were equivalent to a 4.75 mile walk in 65 minutes and I burned 594 calories! Although the elliptical is one piece of equipment you need to build up slowly on, it is so worth it for the calories you can burn. I was really pushing it today since there are no water aerobics classes on the weekends. I had hoped to do my water workout in my own pool, but it isn't warm enough outside today; maybe tomorrow!

Also, last week I purchased a pair of Sketchers Shape Ups. I have been breaking them in each day around the house. The reason for this purchase is the hope that I will be able to do some walking. I am not supposed to walk for exercise because of the impact on my joints. These shoes are so comfortable and cushioned that I am hoping it will be much less impact. I am going to try a 1/2 hour walk in them tomorrow -- 15 min out and 15 min back. I will see how I feel after that whether I try to continue walking or not. I really miss being able to walk for exercise. Many years ago, I walked 4.5 miles an hour and lost so much weight. You also seem to lose the weight all over.

Another goal I have is strength training which again will have to be baby steps. I will be away for almost 3 weeks in May taking care of my dad. When I return, I am going to hire a personal trainer at the gym to help me with strength training. While eating correctly and exercising six days a week on the elliptical and then adding in the water aerobics five days a week has helped me size down some in my pants, my upper body has remained the same size. I think the strength training will help raise my metabolism more as I tone up. I am planning to start this in June.

My eating is finally back under control. Besides the candy splurge I was eating over my fat allowance more often than not. I have been staying within my set ranges this week and the scale showed it.

I really appreciated everyone rallying around and supporting me with motivating comments this month. Spark people are the best friends ever!

Hugs, Betty

You go girl..you have climbed back on the Spark People Wagon Train. Keep on Sparking.
I have been so busy this week I hadn't got a chance to look at my friend feeds.
It's so easy to loose our train of thought and get lost in the old patterns we have been accustom to doing for so long. Old habits are hard to break.
It's a great fear of mine too.

Don't take on too much at a time.

My cousin tried the shapeups and love them. She works in a grocery store and is on her feet all day-usually her feet hurt at the end of the day but said with these on they were comfortable from day 1. I'm going to have to look into them also. So keep on plugging!

10,000 Fitness Minutes!

Thursday, April 08, 2010

I started SP in September when I happened on the web site one day and was instantly impressed by all the information. Even though not prepared to diet, I decided to join and start tracking my food to get a baseline. I was overwhelmed by the community support. After a few weeks of tracking, I could see why I was gaining weight and why my cholesterol was so high.

Exercise has been difficult for me. I love walking but can no longer do it for exercise...too much impact on my spine , neck and hip. A local spa had some gym equipment so I started using the elliptical. I started out and was only able to do 3 minutes. Each day I added a few more minutes until I was doing 60-75 min a day. I am not using cross-ramps, arms, or high resistance. Everything I do has to be low impact. The resistance level is set on 1. Tthe ramp is flat. I plug in my weight, age and the how many minutes I intend to use it. I am on the elliptical 65 min a day, six days a week.

My doctor has been after me for a few years to do water aerobics but I didn't think it was for me. I finally met a SP friend who lives five minutes from me and she encouraged me to try it. I have been loving water aerobics ever since that day a couple months ago. I try to go five days a week for the hour long class. I am not a morning person, but set the alarm so I can catch the class. I have been doing this for a few months now.

I was amazed today to see that I had hit 10,000 fitness minutes! I am even more amazed at how much I love exercising. I want to add more into my routine slowly. I really need to strengthen my core muscles and work on my upper body. My focus has been to get the aerobic exercise going and I can happily say I have accomplished that!

SP and the friends I have met along the way here have touched my life in so many ways. I feel very fortunate and blessed to have found this wonderful web site and all you wonderful people. If I had not stumbled on SP that day, I would probably be a lot heavier and sedentary and miserable. Although I still have days where I stumble, I have lots of friends who help me get back up and move on.

Thank you all for touching my life ! Thank you Chris Downie for Spark People and the lives you have touched!

Hugs, Betty

You have made such great progress. I loved your story about going from 3 minutes a day to 60-75(!!) minutes a day on the elliptical, plus catching a bus to attend water aerobics five times a week. Awesome job! Like you, I also started here last September and also have an issue with a spinal injury. Despite all that, it's amazing what wonderful changes we can elicit in our lives in a short time. I blew it

Tuesday, April 06, 2010

After 6 months of being on SP, I blew it. I am really upset with myself right now that I am still so weak that I bought Easter candy and have been on a binge for 2 days now. It doesn't even taste that good but I keep eating it. emoticon

I have been getting more and more upset because I am now doing over 2 hours worth of aerobics 5-6 times a week, staying within my calories and gaining weight. I know all the reasons why this could be, but I just decided Monday to heck with it all and I started eating whatever I felt like. Fortunately the stupid, disgusting candy will be gone soon, but the worst of it is that after all these months of being in control I could go out so easily, still. Wah Wah Wah. Well it is what it is and now I need to move on and get back on plan. emoticon

Needed to confess so I could move on. Have to go read some more motivational blogs! emoticon

    One day at a time...

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; you shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense
(Ralph Waldo Emerson)

Reading your blog is just like reading my own! I think we get disgusted with ourselves for being out-of-control and actually punish ourselves for it by eating more.

Rationally, I know that just a few days going off-course won't affect the long-term goals. Emotionally, after working so hard and staying the course for so long, it is easy to feel like a loser by falling off the wagon.

Let's just get back on! We'll be ok!

Renee :)

Good thing six months is greater than a mere two days! You don't just blow six months of hard work with a couple of days of candy!

Throw the candy out and start fresh!

I don't think it is about being weak, or in or out of control. For whatever reason you chose a path that is now making you feel unhappy. All you have to do is choose again. You can do this. Take a breath, and throw away the candy and repeat after me *I am not a garbage can*
and start fresh. We love you!

The saying I have underneath my computer screen is: I can't relive yesterday and tomorrow isn't here yet, so I will just deal with today.

I know where you are at. I kept my weight off for several years, and when "life" happened, I chucked all the common sense I had, and am 30 pounds heavier.

You haven't failed unless you quit. We are human, we make mistakes. This life is a journey, and you just hit a bump in the road. You will get back up and keep on going.

We just got back from Gatlinburg, TN. I know all about that Easter candy. I didn't weigh today and just concentrated on the moment and am trying to forget about yesterday's calories.

We can do this. emoticon

Recognizing the problem is half the battle. Forgiving yourself is the other half. So you had some Easter candy (maybe a lot of Easter candy). So what? It doesn't erase the previous 6 months of success on SP. And you say you're doing all that exercise and still gaining weight? Maybe you're exercising too much and your body is holding on to every last calorie you give it. I don't exercise nearly as much as you do. I try for 40 minutes on the elliptical 5 times a week. And guess what I discovered -- on the weeks where I skip a day, I actually lose more weight. But I'm not ready to start skipping days every week -- that's just opening the door and inviting disaster in. LOL!

Have a good night and keep on Sparking. You'll be fine.

Nice day

Sunday, April 04, 2010

Hubby and I had a nice walk in the woods this morning after a leisure breakfast and paper reading. After a late lunch we were able to get in the pool. So I got in both walking and water aerobics today! Yay! Had a nice quiet dinner and calls from family members.

Looking forward to some weight loss this week!

Nothing new

Saturday, April 03, 2010

Just a short blog today. Exercised Tues-Sat this week, water aerobics five days and elliptical six days. No change in weight. I've had some cravings for candy this week, but was able to resist buying what I really wanted because I would have over-indulged. I stuck to the Ghiradelli bittersweet baking chips.

The weather in FL has gone from winter to summer. The pool outside was warm enough to get into today but I decided to wait until tomorrow to try it since the gym is closed on Sundays and I need to get some exercise in.

I made a lot of new Spark Friends this week which is awesome.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all my Spark Friends a Happy Passover or Happy Easter, whichever is appropriate.

Hugs, Betty emoticon
