Go-To Meals

Friday, March 18, 2011

I stole this blog idea from THIRTEENREASONS! These are some of my favorite meals, and most of them are really quick.

Breakfast:
* During the work week, it's always oatmeal (1/2 cup oats, 1 tbsp flax seed, 1 tsp brown sugar, lots of cinnamon) and 2 hard boiled eggs (batch cooked)
* On the weekend when I have more time to cook it's usually scrambled eggs with some diced up veggies, 2 whole eggs, and 3-4 egg whites. I top it with sour cream - sounds weird but it's good!

Lunch:
* I batch cook tuna patties once a week: recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detai
l.asp?recipe=553028
and put them on a whole wheat bread thin bun, and top with mustard. Once tomatoes are back in season I'm going to starting adding a tomato slice in.
* Salads - I'll take leftover chicken or salmon and put it over a bed of greens with feta cheese, tomatoes, and a little bit of ranch dressing or balsamic vinegar.
* Dinner leftovers
* Sandwich: nothing too exciting. I'll usually just do turkey and cheese

Dinner:
* Balsamic grilled chicken breast: recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detai
l.asp?recipe=221852

* Crockpot chili: recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detai
l.asp?recipe=1366707

* Fajitas: slice up some green peppers and onions, and heat it up with precooked chicken with some olive oil. Put into tortilla, top with cheddar cheese and sour cream, and enjoy! yumm
* Roasted Italian Pork Tenderloin recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detai
l.asp?recipe=236051

* Herb crusted salmon (very quick and probably my FAVORITE recipe ever): recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detai
l.asp?recipe=410162

* Pork chops w/ orange-soy sauce (this one is an incredibly quick dinner): recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detai
l.asp?recipe=561743

* I always pair dinner with a massive serving of veggies. My go-to's are broccoli, a small salad, sweet & sour cabbage ( recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detai
l.asp?recipe=30166
), and kale chips ( smittenkitchen.com/2010/03/baked-kal
e-chips/
)

Snacks:
* Trader Joe's blueberry greek yogurt
* Edamame
* Frozen grapes, pears, apples, bananas. I'll eat bananas and apples with 1 tbsp of PB sometimes. yummy
* Green peppers or snap peas and spicy hummus
* String cheese
* Smoothies: 1 cup vanilla amond milk, 1/2 frozen banana, 1/2 cup frozen blueberries, handful of spinach, 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
* 1/2 cup Kashi GoLean crunch w/ vanilla almond milk
* Pretzels
* Kettle popcorn

My cats love workouts

Tuesday, October 05, 2010

I've been pretty quiet on Sparks lately. I've been doing pretty well. How could I not when I get to eat 2300 calories a day? lol. The workouts are going well - they are KILLER! I'm doing the New Rules of Lifting Hypertrophy I program right now. It's more of a time commitment than I'd like but I think it will be effective. I'm seeing some good gains on all of my lifts.

I only have time to write this now because my right shoulder is bothering me again. Grrr! I hurt it at the end of August, gave it a rest for 2 weeks, then used light weights on it for another couple of weeks. Last time, I was having this shooting pain in it if I moved it wrong. In today's workout, it just felt uncomfortable as if the muscles/tendons/whatever weren't moving properly. It's hard to explain. Anyway, I cut out the shoulder work in my workout and now I have a little extra time. I'll give my shoulder a week off and reassess.

For some reason my cats just love workout time. They hang out with me the entire time and ham it up so I'll pet them. lol. Here's Snickers taking over my NROL book:

And Grayson taking over the bench.. I WAS using that, thank you very much kitty.

Grayson also likes drinking my water and forcing me to get a new one!

    My cat thinks that yoga-time is playtime. During downward dogs she sticks her face in my dangling hair and gnaws. Our pets are such great helpers, right? Hahaha.

    Good idea to skip the shoulder work. I hope that it feels better soon!

And the pictures are too cute of the cats! Mine loves to interrupt my workouts too. She loves the yoga mat and wants to lay on it when I'm trying to use it. They just want to be part of what you are doing!!

Bulking

Sunday, August 22, 2010

After spending 2 months trying to get from 130 to 125 lbs (and succeeding!) I have decided that I'm still not satisfied with myself. Rather than trying to lose more weight, I plan on going through a 6-9 month bulking phase in an attempt to put on mostly muscle. I do feel slightly crazy for getting back down to my goal and then deciding to put on weight.

Right now I'm pretty happy with how I look but I can't achieve my goals without bulking. Thankfully I haven't lost the few curves that I do have and my abs are very close to showing up and I can see striations in my legs at times if the lighting is right. I'm pretty small and fitting into a size 2 pretty consistently now. Here's the crazy thing... I actually feel like I'm a little too small! I like the definition I have but I feel like I'm looking a little scrawny! I'd love to have a build that's a little more athletic and muscular and curvy.

Lately I've been reading BodyBuilding.com to learn all about bulking and cutting phases and to find some inspirational girls. Here are some pictures of girls with the kind of look I'd love to go for. I don't want to be "ripped" but I want to be defined and feminine.

So I plan on starting a bulk in September. I plan on starting in September once bikini season is out of the way, because it is inevitable that I will put on a little extra fat as I bulk. I'm still researching how to go about the bulk, but for now I'm planning on eating at 200-250 calories above maintenance every day, eating at least 125g of protein a day (preferably much more), keeping my food mostly clean, and doing an upper/lower body split so that I'm lifting 5 days a week. I'm thinking about getting The New Rules of Lifting (the men's version) because I believe it has a muscle building program in there that will suit me. I haven't decided what to do in terms of cardio yet but it will be minimal.

It should be interesting to see how this turns out. I will have to get some "before" pictures so I can post them with the "afters" later. Although, I might not be ready to show the afters until I've done a cut so that could be like a year from now. We'll see!

    I'm trying to bulk this winter as well!! It's so tough for me mentally, so I'm glad I'm not the only one! I'm transitioning from summer to school (I'm in college) so I'm trying to figure out what my workouts and cardio and calories need to be like, right now I'm just playing with things. Hopefully we can keep in touch and help each other out through this process! YAY BULKING!

    Sounds like your goals are about the same as mine! Bodybuilding.com has really great detailed articles. You should check out siouxcountry.com too. I learned a lot from that site. Good luck on bulking up!!

One thing I'm starting to learn

Wednesday, July 16, 2008

One habit I've been trying to change is my tendency to clean my plate, or eat everything that I've packed at once, regardless of whether I'm hungry or not.

Lately I've been stopping to think about whether I'm satisfied or not. Usually I am perfectly satisfied and stop and eat leftovers later on if I really need them. It's such a simple no-brainer kind of thing to do but it works wonderfully for me.

    One trick I use is to use a smaller plate; that way I can just fill it with sensible portion sizes, but my eyes still see a full plate of food, but without the guilt!

Also, if I cook for myself and make something that is more than one serving, I put the leftovers away before I eat, I'm not so tempted for seconds that way.
