Get to Know Me a Little Better Part 2

Sorry it has taken me so long to write another blog! I've been so sleepy when I have come on here that I have just been using my tracker and visiting spark teams and not much else.

SNOWYOGA asked me 3 questions so I am answering those today:

1. How long have I been working on losing weight?
Off and on for 3 years. Now that I am unemployed, while unfortunate for my wallet, I have had more time to devote to nutrition and exercise. Before I did not have the energy to cook and make sure I got proper nutrition or the energy to hit the gym as often. I am using this opportunity to improve my health.

2. How much have I lost so far?
Well, I had lost 20 lbs. back in March but then I was bedridden until May with horrible flare ups and only got back to exercising a few weeks ago. So I gained all but 7 back. But I am working on getting it back off again!

3. What things do you find work best for you?

One, I am a soda addict so I try to keep it out of my house. And if I cave and buy it, I don't keep it cold. It is way too easy for me to choose a can of coke over water or milk if it is just sitting there staring at me in the fridge. I also buy flavored water because flavor helps me to drink more of it. I like Sobe Lifewater a lot. I also have found the more I choose healthy options, the more I crave them. I was running late yesterday morning for meditation class but knew I would not make it through without eating something. So instead of my usual cereal, I got a McDonalds sandwich. It made me absolutely nauseous after about 40 minutes. I got sick during meditation group. I can't eat food like that anymore. So while it was not fun to get sick, I think it was good to know my body is starting to reject those old standbys and getting used to the new healthier food!

Two, I do not have a lot of energy yet for lots of cardio so I will use the recumbent bike for 20 minutes and not worry that I have not done the elliptical, which is a better workout, or gone for 30 minutes. I do what I can and that keeps me coming back. If I push myself too hard, I will flare up and be in bed for days. It will also make me more willing to give up. Going slowly, I have noticed I can now do the Random Hill setting on the bike, which I could not weeks ago. So slow and steady does win out!

Three, support is essential. I have two friends I work out with regularly. One is my gym, pool, and walking buddy. The other is my bellydancing class buddy. It makes working out also a social activity. I don't wait for my friend to go to the gym, however. If we can't go together, I go alone and take a book to read (since I do the bike and don't use my arms) or listen to music.

    Thanks for sharing Becca. I use to do yoga and loved it but my knees don't like me doing it anymore. I have been thinking about Tai Chi......maybe that would work.

    I recommend trying Yoga too. I find that even when I don't feel like I can exercise, Yoga actually makes me feel better in the process of exercising anyway.

  Becca...darlin always remember that you are a beautiful and most awesome creation. The Father wanted someone just like you. You said you go to a bookstore to read or listen to the music...listen to the music, whenever you can, and just dance. Be silly at home alone, grab a bottle of club soda (remember to pace yourself as the bubbles may have you feeling a tad bit giddy...lol) and just dance. I would love to be there to dance with you. Have a laugh and shimmy. "Nobody can do the shake...like you do, nobody can do the shimmy...like you do". Music is great for the soul. Not to mention the body.

Get to Know Me a Little Better

I thought it might be fun to answer some questions I get asked a lot on here. Feel free to ask me questions here and I will answer them tomorrow!

Q. How much weight do you want to lose?
A. Any is good! lol But ideally about 50 lbs.

Q. Were you ever small or have you always struggled with weight issues?
A. I used to be much smaller before I had fibromyalgia. Even after. I gained a lot of weight during an abusive relationship and since now I have fibro, it has been a huge struggle to get rid of it.

Q. How does having fibromyalgia affect working out?
A. If you don't know what fibro is, it is a chronic neurological condition that affects a person's muscles, tendons, ligaments, and soft tissue. The nerves misfire and tell your brain that your body is in pain, whether it is or not, and distorts the intensity of the pain. It also causes heavy fatigue which can be debilitating sometimes. Some days it is all you can do to get out of bed. Fibromyalgia feels like having the flu every day, all day, while carrying around a stack of bricks. So, to answer the question, it affects working out because I do not have the same recovery time as a healthy person. I cannot work out hard or every day because my body rejects that and refuses to cooperate, no matter how motivated I am. It sucks because while I have all the motivation in the world, my body cannot keep up and if I work it too hard, it will shut down. But I don't give up. I will lose weight as best I can!

    Ah Becca, that is so sad that you have to deal with this. I know that you are a very strong person and will fight this as best you can. Do what you are able and that is all anyone can ask of themselves. Just keep at it as that is all we can do to look after ourselves. As long as we care then that is what is most important. Thank goodness you are in a good place now. Your friends are thinking about you and are with you on this journey! Thanks for posting this blog. It helps to understand were we all are.

    Gosh, you make me ashamed of my own complaints and excuses for working out. I find it all too easy to put off going to the gym or talking my dog around the block. But enough about me, you are an inspiration and I look forward to hearing mosome success stories in the near future! emoticon

    I understand your challenges working out. I've gotten around some of the issues with exercise and fibro on a daily basis by doing short 10 minute workouts. I only do larger workouts like every other day but every morning I do 10 minutes of strength training and ever afternoon I take a 10 minute walk. It's good to see someone else though who understands that I went grocery shopping yesterday and was too worn out to work out too.
