Race #17 - Susan G Komen Race for the Cure

Wednesday, September 25, 2013

This past Sunday, I did the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure for the second year. I really like to support this race because I have several friends affected by this disease. And guess who I was right behind for a little while?? Ali Vincent! Here she is with her mom and someone else:

Here I am with a group of friends that all did the race. The one in the middle (#11518) is Julie; she is an 8 year survivor and she had shirts made for all of us to wear . Her 4 daughters all do the race (one of her daughters came this year but couldn't walk it due to a high risk pregnancy)along with her husband, brother and nieces. Besides her family, several of our mutual friends did it. I am on the far left, #760.

Race #15 and 16

Wednesday, September 25, 2013

On Labor Day weekend, I participated in a Disney Challenge called the Dumbo Double Dare, which consisted of a 10k on Saturday morning and a half marathon on Sunday morning. For doing both events, you would earn a bonus inaugural medal.
Labor Day weekend in my area was unusually hot and humid. After the 10k on Saturday, I made sure to rest and hydrate so I would be prepared for Sunday. I also changed my goal for Sunday. Since this was to be my second half marathon, I originally wanted to beat my time from the first half marathon. Now, my goal was just to finish. I wound up finishing only about 15 minutes longer than my first half marathon, which was really good considering that I walked a large percentage of the time. But I was happy just to finish, as I saw multiple people have to stop and/or be taken away by ambulance due to heat exhaustion or dehydration. Here are a few pictures from the weekend.
The 10k was Alice in Wonderland themed. Here was my outfit, inspired by the White Rabbit:
On the front, the shirt says "No time to say "hello" - goodbye!" and on the back "I'm late! I'm late! I'm late! "
During the half marathon, besides running through the Disney parks, we got to run through Angel Stadium. Here are some girl scout troops, cheering us on:

Running through the castle is always a thrill:

Since I took a picture with Mary Poppins at the first half marathon I did, I figured I would make it a tradition and do it again:

and here I am with my 3 medals:

Here is a picture of just the medals:

I definitely had to work to complete these two races and I literally cried when I crossed the finish line of the half marathon. It took almost everything I had to finish, but I did finish and I found out that I am stronger and much more capable of more than I ever thought.

Race #14 - OC Fair Fun Run

Thursday, August 08, 2013

This was my second year running this race. My time this year was 15 minutes less than last year, but last year I did it with a friend that is not a runner. My next big race event is coming up really soon, so I am really trying to stay on track with my training. Here I am in my new running skirt:

Here is my medal and race bib:

Race #13 - SO FUN!!

Thursday, July 18, 2013

ROC Race (ROC = Ridiculous Obstacle Course)

Here I am, before the race and before I fell into the first mud pit

The obstacles were all great fun, but this was one of my favorites: wrecking balls swing around as you try to run across a narrow beam over a pool of water (I did NOT make it, lol!)

The most fun finish line ever! Giant inflatable water slide.

One of my co-workers took more pictures on course (he has a Tough Camera designed to get wet), but he has not downloaded them yet. I will share more pictures once I get them.

Race #11 and 12 (and an explanation of virtual races)

Wednesday, June 26, 2013

Both of these were virtual races. In case I haven't explained it before, a virtual race is one you run anywhere you want. They are usually fundraisers. I like to do them because they keep me focused on my training while helping someone else with theirs. Some people register for marathons or half marathons as part of a fundraising team. They are required to raise a certain amount and the funds go to whatever charity the team is supporting. When I register for a virtual race, I commit to running a certain distance and the medal is mailed to me. I DO NOT hang the medal on my rack until I have actually run the distance. Some people do not agree with virtual races because people can basically pay the money and get the medal but never run. In my opinion, the money still goes to the charity, so big deal. If someone wants to claim they have earned it but didn't actually run, they are only hurting them self (with the lie as well as losing out on the work out). Personally, I like the virtual race because it pushes me to do my training that I should already be doing anyway.

In this case, the cupcake medal was for a 5k distance and the shoe was for a 10k. I chose to do the cupcake virtual on a Wednesday after work when I didn't particularly feel like running. According to my training plan for my half marathon, I needed to do 3 miles that day. I promised myself the medal for pushing myself to go when I didn't feel like it, and wore my new cupcake socks for added motivation.
Aren't they cute??

The second medal was earned this past Sunday. I love this one:

I think it's interesting that in both cases, I ended up doing a longer distance than the medal required (The cupcake was supposed to be 3.1 miles and I did 4; the shoe should have been 6.2 and I did 10).

Cool. Nice way to have your cake and eat it--run a race, but on your own terms. Good reminder, too, that once started, often easier to go on.
