Still healing

Monday, July 14, 2014

I completed my bilateral DIEP/SIEA breast reconstruction on May 13. I'm healing very well except for a small spot on my abdomen which I have to pack twice a day. Until it's closed, I'm restricted from doing more than walking for exercise. I managed to gain some weight following my surgery. My mom was there to take care of me for the first 6 weeks and between her cooking and my current sedentary lifestyle, it's no surprise.

I still have another procedure to get through before I am all done. This one will not be as invasive. I don't know when it will be yet. The surgeon had said four months, but I'm not sure if the small open wound will delay that timeline. I hope not, as I don't want to have to meet another deductible next year, and I would like to get on with my life.

Glad you had your mom to take care of you; my mom was a big help to me also when I had my bilateral mastectomy 11 years ago. My dad was also a big help being my "chauffer" until I could drive again too.

Thanks MORTICIAADDAMS. At least I managed not to have any infections and the flaps themselves are healing beautifully. Best part is that I don't have to wear a bra. Took some getting used to at first but rather enjoying the feeling now, particularly with the heat and humidity were having.

I was thinking about you the other day. Thanks for the update. I hope that your one stubborn spot heals soon. Bless your mom for taking such good care of you. Nothing like a mother's love and home cooked food. I'm wishing you a speedy complete recovery!

Toning is working

Thursday, April 03, 2014

I have not lost any weight since I started monitoring again in January. But, I have been exercising regularly and for the past month have been working harder on strengthening my core, in preparation for my reconstructive surgery which takes place on May 13. I'll be curious to see what my measurements will be when all is healed. I'm excited and scared at the same time.

It's great you've been focusing on the exercise: will help with the resilience of the skin post reconstruction. All best with that!!

Toning vs scale

Wednesday, January 01, 2014

I consulted with the reconstruction surgeon in November. I asked her how much weight I should lose and still have have enough tissue for the DIEP procedure. She told me not to focus on the scale but rather work on getting toned. She went on to explain that the patients who are toned, have an easier time with recovery. Somehow this seems less daunting than focusing on scale numbers, and also encourages me to move more.

Finished all treatments

Monday, July 08, 2013

I'm finally done with all of my treatments. I had my last chemo on January 10, radiation done on March 13, last Herceptin on April 25, and port removed on May 17. My hair has grown back enough that I can forgo a wig or even a hat.

I am trying to motivate myself to get back on track with my nutrition and exercise. It's a lot harder this time around. Though treatment is over, my mind and body is still trying to recover from it all. I have a hard time keeping my eye on the ball.

I had missed this blog -- but relate to it. Although my "round" of breast cancer sounds like it was less challenging than yours, it took quite a while after physical treatment ended for the mental stuff to kick in . . .

congrats on finishing treatment! The best thing in the worl you can do for yourself, is fill your body with nutrients that the chemo depleated you of. I am a Breast Cancer survivor going on 2 years of completing my 4 chemos....I wish you love and health! If you ever need to talk im here as well! Im staring over (healthy eating and excersize this week) been up and down w/ weight my whole life, but if I kicked cancers ass I can also kick this weight off too!
Blessings!

Finding normal again

Friday, April 12, 2013

I finished my radiation on March 13. I had it twice a day for a month and the fatigue is supposed to start to lift now. I have one more Herceptin infusion on April 25th and then I'll be done with treatments. It will be nice to not have to think about my next treatment.
