A&I BSG Blog Week 4 - Where am I on December's Goals Review

Tuesday, December 27, 2011

Decemer Goals Review - I think I have learned from this assignment to rethink how I write my goals next time since I am finding it hard to review them the way they were written.

emoticon My goal was to lose 1 pound per week for a total of 4 pounds for the month. Not even close to achieving that goal since I only lost approx. 2 pounds for the whole year, but since I am finishing 2011 less than I began it, so I still consider it emoticon

emoticon My exercise goal was to achieve a total of 1500 minutes with 250 being strength. As of right now I still need 445 minutes of fitness which means I would need to do 85 minutes per day until the end of December so I believe I will fall short on the total number of minutes. However, I did get in more than 250 strength even though not the strength I was planning. So, overall, since I still get in over 1,000 fitness minutes during this time of the year I still consider it a emoticon

emoticon emoticon My nutrition goal was to average 1400 calories per day; plan and track 5 times per week; and 3 or more freggies per day. I think for the most part, for at least 3 out of the 4 weeks I was within my calorie range although I probably didn't track as much as I would hav liked and probably there were many days I did not get in enough freggies, but I am still working on that.

emoticon My water goal was 10 or more glasses per day and I think for the most part this was emoticon

Wall pushup challenge ws 1000 before December 31 and I currently have 125 left so I am pretty sure this will be a emoticon

12 Days of Christmas Fitness Challenge: December Goals: I got through the first half on consecutive days, but I found that was too much for my body while I continued to do zumba and other activities so I had to take a break and then I had a hard time getting back to it. As of today I have made it through Day 9, and I plan to do day 10 tomorrow. I am not so sure that I will ever complete Days 11 or 12. I have never been able to do trice dips and especially with my shoulder problem I do not feel it is wise to try it. However, I may try an alternative to that day if I have time while we are out of town. Anyway, I still feel like this is a emoticon because I did prove to myself that I can do so much more than I ever thought possible.

A&I BSG Week 4 Blog - Poinsettia Buddies - 2011 Achievements

Tuesday, December 27, 2011

The blog assigment for Week 4 of the BSG challenge was to write about things I have accomplished in 2011. At first the only things I could think of were negative, but I am trying to re-think those into a more positive accomplishments.

emoticon While I haven’t lost a lot of weight, I am down a couple of pounds rather than up a couple of pounds.

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon I have found what works for me in the fitness category and I have made exercise a fairly consistent part of my journey.

I found some Zumba classes that I like and have resumed taking those classes which I thoroughly love and feel are an amazing way to work up a sweat.

I have learned that I can get stronger by incorporating small amounts of strength exercises throughout the day.

I have learned that while I cannot do the same exercises as others I can modify most exercises to something that works for me and by varying my workouts I do not get as burned out.

emoticon I have learned that by staying focused I can usually achieve my goals.

Hubby and I have marked a couple of items off our bucket list including a short trip to San Antonio and a long and memorable trip to Kauai.

I have gained a lot of knowledge pertinent to my healthy lifestyle journey and knowledge is power.

Overall I am feeling very good about my progress and looking forward to putting my new knowledge to work in 2012 and finally achieving the weight loss and percentage fat that I have been dreaming of.

Fantastic! Finding the lifestyle that works for you is a huge part of the journey...and it sounds like you have found things that you enjoy! It is definitely not 'one-size-fits-all'!

Wishing you success and much joy on the journey in 2012!

A&I Week 3 Blog - Poinsettia Buddies - My Life Since Joining Spark People

Friday, December 16, 2011

This week’s Aspire & Inspire Team’s BSG blog challenge is “My Life Since Joining Spark People”.

I’ve only lost about 16 pounds, but it is 16 pounds and I have kept it off. What I have learned is that this journey is about so much more than just losing weight and losing weight is about so much more than just eating the right number of calories.

The positive things I have done since joining Spark People are:

• I’ve become a lot more consistent with my exercise and I have expanded my list of preferred

exercises.

• I’ve made huge steps in the right direction of overcoming depending on the scale to measure my success. I am not there yet, but I am getting here.

• I’m making progress towards focusing on a healthy lifestyle as opposed to achieving a certain number on the scale.

• I have learned that by supporting and motivating others that I also get supported and motivated.

What are some things I am continuing to learn?

 I am learning that I may not be as strong as some, but there are ways to modify, especially strengthening exercises, to a point that I can do them or that there is another exercise to help strengthen me so that I may one day be able to do that first exercise

 I am learning that I can build my strength by incorporating small amounts of activities throughout the day: how many wall pushups can I do?

 Can I do 1000 during the month of December? Yes I can, by doing 30-40 each day or 60-80 every other day.
 How many lunges can you do today? Let’s try 10 each side every time I go to the bathroom.
 Today let’s see how may squats you can do? Can you do 4 sets of 25?
 Let’s work on toe raises today. Do 25 every time you get up.
 Today’s challenge is jumping jacks

 I am learning that I can stay focused by participating in team challenges, or by reading what my friends are doing.

 I am learning that I can say no most of the time and be okay with that, but that if I cave it does not mean that I am a failure.

Oh, one last thing I've learned is that being skinny does not necessarily mean being healthy.

Wow, you really have some awesome reflections here. You are a class-A motivator for me, and I hope to really be able to live up to some of the quotes/graphics you included. I am (sometimes) trying a similar thing with wall pushups. I'll do 50 and think, gosh my arms are tired, and a couple of minutes later I've forgotten I even did them. I am learning to add little changes just a few at a time, so I can remember them.

I loved your blog, Barbie, and the pictures and quotes you added were emoticon. I especially love the one about not needing to be great to start, but needing to start to be great! I totally agree that our journey is so much more than the number on the scale. Challenging yourself to build up your strength with the different exercises each day is wonderful! You are doing such a tremendous job on your Spark journey!!!

Christmas Decorations

Sunday, December 11, 2011

My husband and I both really love Christmas and, luckily for me, hubby spends about 4 days decorating inside and out in order that he can turn on the lights by December 1st. A few of my friends asked for pictures so I am finally taking the time to do this blog and include some pictures for all to enjoy.

and this is only a sampling of how decorated the house is.

A&I Week 2 Blog - Poinsettia Buddies - Dear Santa

Saturday, December 10, 2011

My Aspire to Inspire BSG challenge this week is to write a letter to Santa.

Dear Santa,

I have been truly blessed over the years, and I cannot think of a single thing that I need for Christmas this year for myself. However, I would ask that as you are checking your list

you would do everything in your power to:

~ Provide warm food, clothing and shelter for those less fortunate people who do not have a warm place to sleep, warm clothing, or food.
~ Protect our men and women who are fighting for our country as well as provide peace to their families.
~ Prevent bullying and provide protection for those who have been bullied.
~ Bring world peace.

Santa, I realize this is a long and difficult list, but anything you can do to get the ball rolling towards these wishes will be greatly appreciated.

If anyone can fill those requests, it's Santa. Thanks for asking him for things that many of us also wish for. If he can help just one person change, that's wonderful.

Barb- I love this letter to Santa. It makes you take a step back and realize that there are less fortunate than us and Christmas is the time to help them. Even though we should all be helping throughout the year, Christmas is a time when everyone needs love and warmth. Thank you for this wonderful blog.

I love your list, Barbara! I was especially touched by your request for Santa to prevent bullying. It is such a prevalent problem in schools, even at the elementary level. I've had to deal with it in my own second grade classroom over the years, and my son experienced bullying in sixth grade. It really affected his self-esteem. I sure wish Santa had the power to stop it!

I hope your wish to prevent bullying is heard. I just talked to a friend of mine, and her niece is being bullied at school. This little girl is mildly autistic, and comes home crying frequently. It's heartbreaking.
