Finally, the sun came out and the temperatures were seasonable! This was day 4 of my new workout program and it was an off day--no lifting--did 30 minutes of 30 second intervals on the treadmill, - had my hair salon appointment - and then had my game to umpire. The weather was so totally perfect for the game, and the sunshine was glorious! I'm pleased that I have my workouts for the next 8 weeks all written out and planned, so I'll merely have to get up and get to the gym...4 weeks of 4 day @ week lifts, then 4 weeks of 5 day @ week lifts.

so, we started out with a balmy morning (at 6:00 am) that gradually turned colder as the rain fell, and the wind kept blowing...no game to umpire :( but we had a lovely event today. My middle daughter got married today, in a civil ceremony to her live-in boyfriend. They will become parents on November 11, and bless us with another grandchild (our 3rd). I was a very nice ceremony and we celebrated over dinner later in the day. Knowing I had this event at 11:00 am, I had to adjust my gym schedule. Initially, I thought I would miss spin class, but then realized I could go to the 6:00 am class, though I would have to lift after cardio, that's what I decided to do. It was totally awesome! I liked getting things done early, and the gym was basically empty. My lift went well, though I was hesitant to reverse my usual order. Knowing this was a potential strength sapper, I changed a bench press from flat bench barbell to smith machine flat bench. It worked very well, and the entire lift was successful. I really liked getting done so early in the day!! Might give it a try tomorrow.

The first "softball" weekend of the year happened over the weekend. I did 8 games 3-Saturday, 5-Sunday. I had been hoping that my 18 lb weight loss, would translate into less pain and swelling of my knee, but disappointingly, that was not the case. The worst of it, is that my good knee was the most painful, especially last night. But I did pass my first, "Monday-Morning-After" moment, by getting to the gym this morning and doing my scheduled workout--legs--and then spin. I must admit, that I struggled in spin, as I could feel the knee swelling up, more and more. But, I went-dog tired and a bit beaten up, I got up and got there. I lifted great, increasing weight and reps, and I'm thrilled with that.
This weekend was also an emotional one for a couple of reasons; my parent's would-be-57 years-anniversary was Sunday, and my dad is not dealing well with the loss, and then all these holidays bombarding him (first her/his birthday, then one week later their anniversary). Add to that, my middle daughter getting married this week, and expecting in November, knowing my mother would have been so excited by this, even if a little disappointed with the circumstances. Hearing my dad say that, made me really sad, and quite emotional, still. My mom was all about the family, and she adored her gradnchldren, knowing how much she adored them, and how important it was for her to share in everthing they do(did) makes her loss seem so permanent, and the her absence leaves such an un-fillable void. I thought I was handling things very well, but from out of nowhere sometimes, things just seem to crumble. Still a process, I know....it does break my heart though to see my dad so lost and alone.
All and all this had been a very trying week....

So, I've had a tricky week...Monday was an off day from the gym, since I lifted on Sunday...food was good on Monday--and my weigh-in was a bit disappointing(only -.6)--so I picked up the workout on Tuesday with Legs; Wed-chest/tri's; Thurs-back/bi's; today shoulders/abs. I missed the second day of legs but that's not a bad thing, really. But as the week progressed, I had a few more demands put on me, with games, helping my dad, watching the grandbabies, and I found myself not tracking like I had been. Because of that, I think I went over my calories on at least Wednesday and Thursday. This proves, yet again, how important logging in and tracking/being active on SP is one of the most important elements for staying on track. I'm still loving my workout, the 30-40 minutes needed to lift each day, provides me with ample time to get that in before spin class. I've been increasing my lifting weight by 5lb increments and I'm even improving on a new exercise that I've been struggling to do (cable lat raises--never did it before and the first couple times I did it, I could barely lift it with the weight stack set on 10lbs)6 reps--did 12 reps today..so I know I'm making progress with my strength gains...and today, I wore a workout top that I hadn't been able to wear for about a year and a half, felt great to be back in that-in fact I've tried it on-and taken it back off-a few times since January because it was still too tight. While I was working out today, two gym regulars - who see me every day - that I call the cardio queens, stopped me to tell me how good I look--that was great. Of course they followed that up with "what are you doing", and I told them that diet is 90% of the equation and strength training was another variable that they are missing...They probably do twice as much cardio as me, and aren't seeing half the results I am....I am also noticing this week, that my middle is thinning out more too....all great proof that I'm seeing results other than just the scale!

Yesterday and today, I had totally awesome workouts! Yesterday was a lifting day, as previously blogged about, for which I'm still feeling the results today!! Love that!!!!! Today was spin class, and I also added 15 minutes on the treadmill before the class with a steep incline...that worked my glutes (which were already reminding me of yesterdays workouts)and then the focus of the spin class was also targeting glutes...all and all I feel it, and it feels great!
I love Saturday spin class, a. because it's always 60 minutes, and b. because it's interesting and challenging. During the week the class can be stale, and if not for my iPod and my heart rate monitor, I'd have a difficult time getting a very good workout. It's interesting to see the difference in the attendees of the weekday classes vs the weekend warriors--the weekday crowd tend to be mostly folks just going through the motions, yes, there are a few who are working at maximum level, but the majority are just filling time...there's even one girl who almost ever class, spends time texting on her phone...but, regardless, the class allows for individuals to tailor to themselves to a certain degree, and I'm free to work at m own level, as well, and I certainly do that. It amuses me that I'm drenched at the conclusion of class and there are women with their hair down, and/or glasses on who are not even damp...whatever...
All in all it feels good to be back in the swing, and to be getting all I can out of my workouts!
With softball starting to get in full swing, it's important for me to take advantage of my gym time now, while I'm 100% healthy and have free time to spare. Eventually, the games will take a toll on me, it's my goal to not allow that fatigue/pain deter me from my goal.
