Today after the gym, of course, I went down to my daughter's kindergarten class to read a Dr. Seuss book to them. (She's the teacher) I was really great fun to watch them and listen to the funny things they say. She really loves her job and I think her kids are really lucky to get her as their teacher. After that we went shopping a little and then grabbed a bit to eat and went to a charity Basket Bingo event. For this reason, I'm just quickly touching base for the day.

Today's workout:
Smith Machine Squat 4x10,10,8,6 55, 60, 65, 70
Wall Sits 5x15 10lbs
step ups 5x15 24lbs
calf raises 5x25 125lb

60 minute spin class

Sounds like a fun day--and you got your exercise in, too!
Yay for you!

My first attempt at navigating the weight machines on my own went well, mainly cause the room wasn't busy on Friday evening! The PT recommended either increasing the weight or doing 2 circuits if it gets too easy, but not more reps (he has me do 15). Is that in line with your knowledge, also?

Good health today!

It's the days that you really don't want to exercise

Thursday, March 05, 2009

that end up making you feel the best and prove how necessary the workout was. Today I seriously considered not doing my spin class. I really wasn't feeling it, and since my "spin friends" were not there I was going to blow off class. In fact on my way down from the ladies room (have to stop there before class begins) I was trying to talk myself into just skipping for today. But instead, I decided I would go to class but I wasn't going to push it. As I started class I was totally unmotivated and wasn't paying a whole lot of attention to my HRM. As class progressed I slowly got into it and found myself working hard In the end I buned over 400 calories and felt so great. First because I overcame my desire to skip class and then because I got an awesome workout. So, it seems I got the most out of a workout on a day when I really wasn't up for it. After class when a friend stopped to chat she asked how I was feeling and I said great, and actually meant it!

Today's workout:
assisted dips 2x10 125lbs
one arm row 2x10 20lbs
close grip seated row 1x10, 10, 8 70lb 75lb, 80lb
wide grip seated row 1x10, 10, 8 75lb, 80lb, 85 lb
barbell bicep curls 1x10, 10, 8 35, 40, 45lbs
preacher curls EZ bar 1x10, 8, 8 35, 40, 45 lbs
incline bicep curls 2x14 30lbs
concentration curls 3x10 15lbs
lower ab crunch machine 3x15 25, 30, 35lbs

Very exciting

Wednesday, March 04, 2009

I received an e-mail from the newspaper reporter who published my story in USA TODAY sharing a reply she received from a reader in Georgia relating how my story helped inspire her to begin her own weight loss.

To: Hellmich, Nanci
Subject: Weight-Loss Challenge

Nancy, I am on my way. I've lost 6 pounds.
My inspiration was your article about Diane Reuter, 53 of Richwood , N.J. The day I read this I cut out the article and taped it to my closet door.
I didn't note the date when I cut it out. Can you help?
I'll keep you posted when I've lost those 25 pounds.
Thanks, Barbara

Hearing something like this is humbling, in that we often think our stories/experiences are limited solely to the effect it has on us alone. When I hear that someone else has found what they needed to begin their own success story makes me understand the "power of one". My decision to publish the story of my journey was fraught with apprehension and the deciding factor for me was the hope that others would realize that it's possible to lose such a large amount of weight in a healthy and safe manner without outside/unnatural interventions.

Wow, Di, you've become a pinup! LOL It is exciting to know that you inspired someone--truth is, you inspire all of us! Any of us who happen upon your page can't let go--your changes are so awesome. You are one of my SparkPeople heroes!

ps I actually got started on the weight lifting machines yesterday. I paid for a formal personal workout training from the therapist so he could show me what I could do without hurting my knees or hips. It felt good! I plan to do it 3 days a week to start.

I wouldn't be brave enough to do it without seeing your example and what you have done to improve your health. Thanks!

Good health to you!

until our baby girl comes home from school for her spring break. Since sh's been gone we moved her into a new room and redecorated it for her. She's gonna be very surprised but in particular I think she's going to be most happy to see some of her special mementos from her trip to Australia framed and displayed on her new bedroom walls. We're really excited to be able to see her and have her here for a week. We will also be getting our married son and his wife home for a few months while they have a home built. It's going to be a little cramped for them, but we'll find a way to work it out. It's especially exciting as they are expecting their first child (my first grandbaby)around the same time as the house is scheduled to be completed.

Today was an awesome workout! I tweaked my workout this week. Changing up the reps and incorporating some different exercises so my body doesn't get too comfortable with the workout. I felt the workout all afternoon in my muscles and it felt awesome!

Today's workout:
Bench press 4x 10, 8, 8, 6-65lb, 70lb,75lb, 80lb
Incline bench press 4x10, 8, 8, 6-55lb, 60lb, 65lb, 70lb
Decline bench 3x10, 8, 8-70lb, 75lb, 80lb
flat bench flyes 3x15 30lb
pullovers cross bench 3x15 30lb
assist. dips 3x15 95lb
tricep pressdowns 4x10, 8, 8, 6-40lb, 45lb, 50lb, 55lb
weighted tricep dips 3x15 25lb

plank 2x60sec
Plank w/leg lift 2x45sec
leg lifts 2x5 held for 30 sec each
elbow to knee 3x25

60 min spin class

How exciting for you to have the kids back for a while as adults. It doesn't happen so often now & can get stressful, but the time with them is precious. And as a grammy of 5 little boys, can tell you being a grandparent is the best! Your reward for not killing your kids while they grew up, LOL!

And Di, it's so wonderful that you are now in physical condition to really enjoy your grandchildren! Sometimes in the last few years, my littlest grandson was speedier than me, and I would hurt after 5 minutes of playing with them. But no more! and you are now not in that shape!

You are so blessed to have come your life changes before you lost any time with your little new grandchild!

Good health today!

Snow Day

Monday, March 02, 2009

Well we finally got the big winter storm. We got over 8 inches last night and I was worried that I couldn't get to the gym or that the spin class wouldn't be held. Forunately my DH very kindly drove me and picked me up and the guy who subs regularly for the regular instructors and is always at the gym, taught the class. It was totally awesome as he had all new music and since he didn't have anyone else but me in class, he didn't "overtalk" and we really pushed it for the entire class. It was really a great workout and lots of fun. Additionally, it made me really proud of myself for not using the snow day as a free pass to skip the gym. Of course I had a little help getting there but would have gone anyway.

today's workout:
arnold press 3x15 30lbs
upright rows 2x15 45lbs
seated lat raise 1x15 10lb 2x12 16lb
front lat raise to overhead press 2x15 20lb
bent over lat raise 2x15 10lb
lying lat raise 3x15 5lbs

65 minute spin class
