Better than Facebook!!

Hey Sparkie Friends -
I was just listening to music and reading articles, etc on SP and was thinking how "at home" I feel at SP. There is truly something for everyone! All difference kinds of folks, different lifestyles, different backgrounds, different continents! What an incredible community we are all a part of. All of us heading in the same direction - focusing on a healthy lifestyle, finding like-minded folks who can encourage each of us in our food choices, exercise options and recreation activities!

I used to spend hours - literally hours - on FB everyday! Ridiculous and what a waste of time - for me! I wasted hours playing pointless games - I could have been working on getting this fluff off of my thighs! LOL!! Please don't misunderstand, FB has an incredible ability to reconnect you with people you haven't seen or heard from in decades (if you are old enough to be estranged from someone that long - LOL! like I am!) In that sense, it is a lot of fun - high school/college friends! Catching up and all of that - but for me, much of that serves to just get me depressed that I have allowed my body to get into the state that it is in.

Sparkpeople serves a much different purpose! While we still connect with one another, it is more of a connection with others who share the situation you are CURRENTLY involved in! We can really only "DO" something about the present - not the past, and we don't know the future! Make this moment count! What is the BEST use of this time right now???

Sorry I get on these "Ponderances" and my brain just goes on and on! I am just so thankful for Sparkpeople! If I can encourage someone else in this journey with me, then it is a good day! Many Blessings to each of you!! You can do this - we can do this! - Wait - we ARE DOING THIS!!!

    I stumbled upon SP by accident or Fate!? The site is awesome, it reminds me of Weight Watchers in how you can track your exercise and food, etc. But it's FREE!!! Thank you so much SP. I love this site. emoticon

    I agree! I still dabble in FB--family and friends there who are not here...but, it is funny that I feel "closer" in many ways to the folks on SP (whom I have never met) than I do those on FB (former schoolmates, etc.)!!!

SP is a different type of "connection"--as you said, we all have something in common and we can help and encourage each other toward goals.

Also, the 'games'--trivia, getting as many Sparkpoints as possible, is not only fun, but EDUCATIONAL!!!! Boy, I learn something new on Spark EVERYDAY!!! and, meet great folks like you!!!

My May goal is to exercise for at least 20 minutes of cardio DAILY!!!! So far so good. Tuesday is our down day (or it has been lately) - we eat something I pick up on the way home from work, and we usually watch a movie together - just me and my two boy-type teenagers (it is usually some blow em up-shoot em up something or other.) It is so easy for me to come home and vege all evening - usually 100% couch time!

Today.....TODAY was different!! I still picked up some dinner on the way home - ok true confessions - it was Domino's Pizza - - BUT - we watched our movie then I went for a power walk - OUTSIDE!! I love spring!

4 days in a row...tomorrow is my next C25k workout - I am looking forward to it - very strange for me to even utter such a sentiment!

One of the songs on my Ipod is Brave by Nichole Nordeman - "So Long, Status Quo, i think I've just let go! The way it's been is no longer good enough" I love this!!! I sound really good singing along with the volume up and the ear buds in.....apologies to my precious family ! LOL!

I am totally pumped up and SPARKED!!! I have sticky notes on my file cabinet with the distance for each day!! 20 Minutes per day is such a small amount of time - to date I have done more than that each day! I love this though and it makes me feel good - happy, clear and bouncy (in a good way!) :) Happy Sparking everyone! Many Blessings, Trish

I have to say April was a crazy month! Lots of stuff going on - much of it good but also a distraction to keeping up with things on SP. I am working on the balance of things in my life.

I know life happens so I am continually realizing that I have to find what works for me and my family and still stay on track with a healthy lifestyle. I have joined the SP May Challenge so am excited about the consistency and accountability of that challenge. My goal for this month is to exercise at least 20 minutes EVERY DAY!! I need to say that "out loud" so that other people know and can make me accountable - maybe I just need to make my own self accountable?? Hmmm?!

Thinking about things that are coming up in the next few months, I am trying to plan how to best take care of things. My youngest is now ready to go get his driving permit. Where is that white-blonde headed little boy? How is it that he is now over 6 ft tall and wanting to take control of my vehicle?? Yikes!! I am also supposed to have some surgery in June - so won't be cleared to exercise for several weeks. Yikes-again! (Chair aerobics??)

I walked/ran two miles today - so am back on track. One day at a time!! Hope everyone has a great month!! It is May 1st! Let's Go Y'all!

    Sounds like you're glad to be back....glad to have you back!!! You seem geared up and ready to go, have at it my friend! (I know that feeling of the "white-blond" headed little boy..I went through the just yesterday, no, wait...ohhh, was it really that long ago????? Don't worry mom, they come through this just fine...you will too believe it or not!) Good luck with your May challenge.....and surgery, I'm sure you'll find some SAFE way to exercise...just don't over-do it...Have a great week... emoticon

New old pants!!!

Several of you posted encouraging comments about my first 5K!! Thank you so much!! Y'all are awesome!!! (Can't tell I'm from Texas can you??! :) )

I finished the "race"!! That was my goal...to finish! I mostly walked, but learned a whole lot about the mental side of these things!! My family was there at the finish line to cheer me on and it was wonderful!

Two days later, my shins are still screaming - I usually run/walk on a treadmill, so this road running business was new for me! I have been stretching like a fiend, so I am getting back on the treadmill tonight!! The upside of all of this occurred this morning.....

I went to my closet (which like many of you, has a nice range of sizes!!) I pulled out a nice pair of capri pants, swiped the dust off of them (it has been two summers since they would fit my rear end!) and tried them on....they are down one size from where I was when I started all of this 3 weeks ago. THEY FIT!!!!! REALLY - no lying on the bed, no struggling with the zipper, no sucking in my gut....they really fit!!! WOOOOHOOOO!!!

So, as hard as Saturday was....physically and mentally....the desired effect was achieved!! We are on the right path - health and well-being....let's keep it up!! Yay-us!! :)

Fast Break Strategy #5-Keeping Goals in the Top of your Mind

Since I have just begun this SP journey, I am getting these Fast Break Stage emails every other day or so. There is lots of good info in them - like the rest of the SparkPeople site! The Subject line of the email said "Losing your momentum? Tips to stay motivated." It kind of surprised me that some folks may be losing momentum this early in the game. Then as I was pondering this concept for a bit, I realized that in just about every other attempt I have made, I did the same thing.

THIS TIME IS DIFFERENT!!

I can't exactly tell you why at this point. A couple of things may have contributed to my improved resolve this time. Several months back a friend posted a link to a 5k to benefit an orphanage in Africa. This 5k was to be held in a town near ours and the entry fee was reasonable for a first timer like me. I kept this in the back of my mind, and as the day approached (it is actually this coming Saturday!) I realized that I better get myself ready. So a week and a half ago, I began SP!
Another thing that sparked my motivation was my brother. He and his wife and his 4yo began P90X a couple of weeks back. They will celebrate their 10th anniversary June of 2011 and are planning to go to St. Lucia - he said they needed to have their beach bodies ready! So they are shredding it! About midway through this conversation, I realized that I am the world's worst at NOT setting goals. I guess my theory is that if I don't set them, then I won't be disappointed in myself not to achieve them - right??!! NO!!!

So....I set a small goal - do that 5k no matter what! So I am....I have trained, am eating right, and have even found out exactly where the race beginning is located. I am so excited! Pray for me, y'all! :)

    sure will, sounds like you had the same momentum coming into it I did (last time) that I was going to do this no matter what and it really has stuck with me cause the opportunities I COULD HAVE BLOWN IT , i DIDNT , emoticon
