Dad made it through the surgery

Sunday, October 17, 2010

6pm

Dad made it through his surgery Friday. The doctor said it was going to take an hour and a half but ended up being 2 hours long. He got to walk a little bit yesterday but the had to give him a couple of units of blood because of his blood count being low. He got the dressing off of his leg that he had the knee surgery on. They had it on so tight that his leg was swollen espeically around the knee and he had 2 big blisters on the outside of the knee. He walked to the bathroom 5 times with someone in the room. The first time was when his oldest brother (the one that I've mentioned that was in the hospital a lot) was there and the last 4 times I was there and so was our minister. He even walked from his room and past the nurses station but not all the way down where our minister and I were going to be at. That's pretty good for just having surgery on his right knee (it was a total knee replacement) 2 days ago. He's not pushing himself or anything. He's taking his time on walking. He is bound and determine to get home. He was even moving the leg the day of the surgery but not too much. He was moving it from side to side and bending the knee a little bit. He can move it more today and can move the toes. I feel better and better as time goes by.

Make sure that he gets those blood thinner shots if he is not on a blood thinner., That way he will not get a blood clot in his legs and that can travel to his other organs. The blood thinner will make sure that does not happen. I got mine done over a year ago and I am happy with the out come. Yes they do start you the day after surgery to get the joint moving again.

A long and busy day

Thursday, October 07, 2010

7:23am

Today is going to be a long and busy day. Dad has preop tests for his knee replacement surgery a week from tomorrow. While he is doing that I'm going to my exercises. So I can keep busy while he's doing the tests. Sitting and waiting is boring. I already did my exercises yesterday and Moday but I want to get some more done. I did the treadmill twice for 25 minutes each and the stationary bike once for 20 minutes both days. I might do an extra stationary bike, the elliptical, and rowing machine today. Yesterday afternoon for an hour and six minutes I took the dog for a walk. I walked from the west of town to the east side of town and back. Dad didn't even know that I left. Talk about being tired before I wanted to be tired. I didn't have much sleep Tuesday night (6 hours) but somehow I must of had an adrealine rush to last all day until about 6 or 7pm because about that time is when I was starting to get tired. I'm still tired even though I've been up for 2 and half hours. I am hoping to get a boost of energy before we leave to go get my exercises done. Might even take a nap while we're headed to Galesburg.

Yup, dad is having knee replacement surgery a week from tomorrow. He's getting a a stainless steel knee instead of a plastic knee. The stainless lasts 20 years where the plastic only last 5 years. He'll be 94 when the knee wears out. This will be the 2nd surgery that he has had this year. The last one was back in April when he got the defibulator.

1:17pm

Well, we found out what time dad is going to have his surgery a week from tomorrow. Dad had to see the preop nurse anyway and she found out that it's going to be a 8am. So we have to be at the hospital by 6am. So we are going to be really tired that day.

I did my exercises today plus some core exercises. I'm a little tired today but I tried taking a nap on the way up but it didn't happen. Took a little one on the way home but still tired. Might take one after I get done in here.

I can't believe September is almost over with

Wednesday, September 29, 2010

7:56am

I can't believe that September is almost over with. Tomorrow is the last day of it. It seems like only yesterday we started the month. Before you know it, we will be celebrating Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years.

Dad's knee replacement surgery is coming up in 16 days. He's going to get his right knee replaced. There is too much arthritis to clean out so they decided to go ahead and replace it. They're going to give him a stainless steel knee instead of a plastic one since the stainless steel last 20 years (he'll be 94 by then) and the plastic lasts 5 years. Hopefully he can get some relief of the pain in that leg. That's why he had the cramp in his leg back in March 2009. This is the same leg they took the veins out when he had the quadruple bypass surgery in January 2009.

Boy do I wish that I wasn't on T.O.M right now. It's making me tired and the occasional feeling like I need to get sick. I was walking the dog this morning (the only walk we have been on this morning since it's a bit cool outside) and I felt like I was going to get sick. This is about the time that I usually do feel it coming on but don't have to do it. This about when I'm the heaviest on the flow. It doesn't matter if I haven't had anything to eat or not. When I was taking the dog for a walk, I was doing what I usually do when I feel like this. Take in deep breaths until the feeling goes away. Does any women out there know what I'm talking about and what do you do when you have this problem? Let me know what you gals think and do.

I haven't figured out the crocheted versions of the water bottle carrier yet. I'm going to wait to do those right now because I'm in the middle of working on a knitted leftover yarn afghan that I'm making for my brother who is getting married and I need to get that done before June and I REALLY want to get it done before then. I have at least 3 to 9 months left to do on it but I have at less than 9 months to go until the wedding . So I need to get that done. I may do it in different colors than what I have the knitted versions are. If you want to see pics of the knitted versions, I have them posted on here.

9pm

I didn't do my exercises today. My T.O.M was heavy and didn't feel like doing them for some reason. Plus I hate being on the treadmill with it being heavy. Its slowing down and I should be able to do them Friday. The only exercise that I could handle today was the 2 walks with the dog.

I'm doing 2 knitted leftover yarn afghans now. The one that I'm making for my brother in Ohio and another one either for myself or someone else. I have no idea. I'm using the same size knitting needles on both but the one that I'm making for my brother in Ohio I'm using circular knitting needles and the other one is with straight knitting needles until I can use the circular knitting needles. I might work on either one of them tonight if I'm not too tired. I'm a little tired now but you may never know how I'm going to be by the time I go to bed.

The dog is trying to tell dad to go to bed. This is about the time that she does this. The dog we had before her did the same thing when we had him. Marvin (our previous dog) did this after dad got home after he had heart surgery back in 1996. When the weather was over at the 10pm news was when he would start whining to tell dad that it was time to go to bed. But Lady got dad out of his chair and got into it. But she's going to go outside for the last time tonight and we will be going ot bed here in a little bit.

This year has really been flying by!

I can't believe that they would implant a replacement body part that would only last 5 years. What a racket! Imagine having to go through all that pain and recovery more than once in your life.

I can't believe September is almost over either. But, I love the fall and the changing of the leaves.
I am a cross stitcher and have a couple of projects I am working on right now. And now that the weather is getting cooler I will have more time to work on them. Good luck with your afghan for your brother.

Busy week

Saturday, September 11, 2010

9:09am

This seemed like a busy week with Monday being a holiday. Didn't get the chance to do any treadmills and stationary bikes until Wednesday. That day and yesterday felt long with us doing our exercises. Where we do our exercises are having a picnic today at a golf course. Same place as they had it last year. I don't think that we're going to take anything out this year. Was going to take pumpkin bread but don't have the stuff or the time to do it. The picnic starts in less than 2 hours. It starts at 11am.

I'm tired from yesterday. 2 treadmills for 25 minutes each, 2 stationary bikes for 20 minutes each, and 6 walks with the dog for 12 minutes each. I was a little sore yesterday but I'm fine now. Just a little tired. I hope that I don't fall asleep when we go somewhere today. If I do, I will so I can have a little rest. I haven't gotten the chace to add in the Biggest Loser DVDs yet. Every time that I want to do them, I either don't have the time or I'm just too tired to do them.

This coming Wednesday is the class for dad's surgery next month. It's going to be early start for the day with it being at 8am. It's going to take anywhere between 20 minutes to 2 hours long to explain everything. I found some information that talks about the knee replacement surgery that he's going to have. I'm going to take it up and see if that is what they're going to do to dad next month.

I tried on a pair of size 20W olive green capris last night and they fit. The waist band is a little tight and there is a button on the inside of the waist that you're suppose to button but I can't. But the metal one that you see I can. The rest of the capris fit comfortable but not the waist band. It was hard to breath with them on. It won't be too much longer until I can fit into them. I cannot wait. I'm wearing a size 22W jeans right now that I'm about ready to change into a pair of shorts. It's going to be way to warm for this pair to be on today. It's going to be almost 80 degrees outside today and I don't need to be sweating like crazy when I take the dog for more walks later on today.

Long week

Thursday, August 26, 2010

8:46am

This has become a long week. Too long it feels like and it's not even Friday yet. Got my major exercises (treadmills, stationary bikes, etc) done yesterday and Monday and a few other things. Right now I'm going to incorporate the Biggest Loser DVDs that I have (Cardio Max and Power Sculpt) starting Sunday. But I'm going to do those when I'm not doing the treadmills and stationary bikes. So that will be the weekends and Tuesdays and Thursdays.

I'm making water bottle carriers. I'm doing a knitted version and crocheted version. I haven't made the patterns for the crocheted version yet because I haven't decided on the stitch yet. I'm making them for 3 different liter size bottles since not all liter bottles are created the same even though the hold the same amount of water. I'll have photos up when I get them done. I'm working on one now that I've been trying to finish the body of but I had to rip it out. I had a dropped stitch and it was hard to get to to where it was at. I'm thinking of making them in smaller sizes for smaller bottles but I have to get the water bottles that dad has in the fridge to measure those and make patterns for those in a knitted and crocheted version. The reason why I'm making the patterns is because I don't have a place to put the water bottles when I'm doing the stationary bike except putting them on the floor. I thought that I should make a water bottle carrier that I can sling over one shoulder and carry it that way when I'm on it. That and the rowing machine and elliptical. I saw another person who had a water bottle carrier but hers was made out of fabric where mine is made out of yarn. If anyone knits or crochets and wants the pattern, let me know and I'll send you the patterns. But give me time to figure out the crocheted pattern since I haven't figured out the stitch that I wanted to do yet.

Well, my dad will be getting his right knee replaced. He'll be getting it replaced on October 15,2010. The doctor said that they need to replace it instead of cleaning it out because there is way too much arthritis in the knee to clean out so they have to replace the knee. He found out this past Monday. Sometime next month we have to go to a class that will explain what they're going to do with the knee from start to finish.
