Flag Day ... a bit of history.

Friday, June 14, 2013

Poster commemorating the 140th Flag Day on June 14, 1917.

In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on that day in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.[1] The United States Army also celebrates the Army Birthday on this date; Congress adopted "the American continental army" after reaching a consensus position in the Committee of the Whole on June 14, 1775.[2][3]

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day; in August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.

Flying my emoticon today for all my neighbors to see and hopefully take the HINT! Sadly, I think it's only the military families that remember to do this. There is nothing wrong with flying the flag to honor our country and our freedoms every single day . . . I remember when I was growing up almost every house flew the flag. I think it would help unify us now and to remind us how lucky we are to live in the "land of the free".

Extra Strawberries? Try this...

Sunday, June 09, 2013

Got my Prevention magazine and saw this recipe and decided to give it a try. emoticon Yumm.....and simple to make.

Strawberry Custard Cake

1. Heat oven to 375 F. Coat shallow (1 1/2") baking dish (2 qt.) with baking spray. Hull and slice 1/2 lb. strawberries. Arrange in dish.

2. Beat 4 lg. eggs and 1/3 cup sugar on low until smooth, 2 minutes. Stir in 1 cup of 2% milk, 3 TBSP each whole wheat and all-purpose flours, 1 tsp. each vanilla extract and lemon zest, 1/4 tsp. cinnamon, and a pinch of salt.
Pour over berries and bake until puffed, set and golden. 40 minutes. Cool and dust with confectioners' sugar.
This will make 8 servings.

Nutrition: (per serving) 114 cal, 5g protein, 17 carbs, 1g fiber, 11g sugars, 3g fat, 1g sat fat, 68 mg sodium

Hope you have some extra strawberries and can give this a try. I'm not much of a baker, but this was easy enough and really tasty.

Thanks for stopping by. Have a great Sunday. ((HUGS))

Another year has gone by

Wednesday, May 29, 2013

This week marked three years since I found SP and started my journey to a healthier lifestyle. I had lost 50 lbs., put 10 back on and now have a total weight loss of 52.5 lbs. My goal now is to toss a total of 58-60 lbs. to the curb....that's my way of saying losing the weight and not finding it again.
This journey still amazes me. Learning how to eat and exercise so I don't feel like I'm on a diet or burning myself out with exercises that I just don't like to do. I'm happy with my progress. I still have ups and downs, like everyone else, but I'm learning how to cope without using food as my comfort zone. I love using portion control and tracking my food. I plan my menu in the morning so I know just what I can or cannot have through out the day. Of course there is always wiggle room. None of my menus are set in stone, but my determination to stay healthy is. I live by the rule "one day at a time".....if I had a bad day I let it go before I fall asleep and start again the next day.
Life is good and I have many dear Spark friends to thank for that....I start and sometimes end my day with you.
Let's continue this journey together: we are all on different roads, but we are all moving forward.
Thanks for stopping by, have a great night....HUGS!
By the way if you haven't tried one of the cauliflower crust pizza recipes on SP....you need to. It's a little puttsey, but so worth it.

Barb, you sound so "up," so "positive." You have done an amazing job on your journey. You never gave up, just took a little detour for a while and now you are back on the road and going full force once again. I love you attitude! I am still here, still fighting, not gaining but not losing either. You have never given up on yourself or on me and for that I thank you. I am determined to move forward and with dear friends like you, how can I lose? So today, I am going to fight harder, plan my meals for the day and start moving in the right direction, right along side of you. Have a wonderful day, my friend. ((HUGS))

Another week on my journey.

Sunday, April 14, 2013

So today's weigh in showed no loss, no gain. Before SP I would have been terribly disappointed after having a good week of healthy eating and fitness. But today I just accepted reality. I am more than that number on the scale.
I am 11 pounds from my ultimate (new) goal with the dreaded last 10 pounds right around the corner.
Today I switched my Spark Coach program to "plateau busting". So for the next 4 weeks I will listen to new tips and ideas. I really like the Spark Coach... I'm sure I will be tweaking my plan yet again. I don't mind tweaking, after all nothing works the same forever. And with spring weather coming our way.....soon, I hope. I will be able to add more out door walking and gardening to my plan.
The joy of this journey is in my blood, so to speak, and I am not going to ever give up on the "new" me the keeps emerging.
Hope everyone has a happy, healthy Sunday. Thanks for stopping by. HUGS!

Hi Barb...trying to catch up. Sorry I am so late responding to this blog. You know that scale doesn't always behave, no matter what we do. At times I've gained when I've been so good. But you know if you stick to the plan the dreaded scale will know who's boss and finally give in.

You have racked up so many "non scale victories" and have to be proud of all you have accomplished. Being 11 pounds from your new goal is fantastic and I hope and pray to be able to say that too someday. You are healthier, stronger and more in control of your life and that is worth more than the number on the scale.

I am thinking of you and sending you a great big hug for eating healthy, sticking to the plan and tweaking it a bit and never giving up. ((HUGS))

Barb, you are so right in what you've said here. I am so proud of you for embracing right where you are - right in this moment. That is a difficult thing for most of us to do. With that mindset firmly in place, I don't think you'll need to "dread" those last 10 pounds. Remember, the mind is a very powerful tool! You just demonstrated it to yourself! If you believe it will be hard, it will most likely be so. Why not believe that it will be easier than you thought? . . .
I know you will do it!
