Hydrofit class proved a smashing success except for one instance of treading in the deep end, throwing a ball to my partners, and keeping my elbows above the water. I suppose I need to tread much faster in order to keep myself up out of the air, but putting my arms straight over my head tends to sink me. Otherwise I had a blast, including swimming like I was being chased by a shark -- Eddie Izzard's "sharky sharky" swim for certain! -- to the end of the pool, much to the amusement of my instructor, Pam.

I was feeling pretty good, I must say.

Several of the gentlemen and ladies in the deepwater fitness class also take Hydrofit. I'm afraid that I'm going to blow my pay cheque out before I even get to Georgia next weekend. Payday has just hit and I'm already prepared to spend it a hundred ways til Friday.

Yesterday was Bike Night and I showed up just in time (5 minutes left). No free bike license from the police, no free bike swag, sigh! I did get a large burrito and a shrimp taco from a street truck vendor, which was fantastic. I need to work off the heavier meal.

Love the food trucks. Did you hear about Eddie Izzard's marathon project?

Aquatic Invitations

Thursday, May 17, 2012

The aquatic aerobics instructor invited me to her more challenging "hydrofit" classes. I considered signing up for the 6-week course; for $21, it seems a fair price for splashing around in a pool and getting more of a workout. While I still struggle with some of the basic moves, especially anything requiring opposite sides doing complicated actions (scissor, cross-country ski, arms stretching out, arms flexing perpendicular...), I'm going to give the class sampler a go.

The only pity is the cycling express class runs today and I can't make either! Oh well, I'll do it next week. The hydrofit class runs on Thursdays and Saturdays in the new session, so maybe I duck out of a deep water Wednesday class for a spinning class then. At least I have options!

I've also learned I'm brilliant at sitting in an L "chair" pose and doing a double Queenly wave. This is used to motor around backwards and I was doing laps that way. Hee! Hallooooo! Many amused ladies and lifeguards last night as I kept up my monarchical commentary as I went past.

My poor crammed schedule needs more space and I either go to the Bike Festival tonight or the workout class, and cycle downtown afterwards. Maybe there's time before!

P.S. Nerd alert: I also did synchronized swimming, lol.

Thanks for the info! I used to swim there when I was a kid -- I loved that pool more than any other before or since.

For the hydrofit? It's at the South Oakland YMCA -- has the details. If you go to program registration, you can see the descriptions for the aquatic classes. I think they also have it under the "group exercises" link tab somewhere.

The pool is warm without being awful and I like motoring around. ;)

Fun in the Sun

Wednesday, May 16, 2012

Beautiful springtime weather finally found its way to me! Hazy blue skies, warm evenings, and refreshing breezes beg me to go outside. I missed Performance Bike's free tune-ups, so I may have to trot mine down to the local bike store for love. It's sitting in the kitchen waiting for some attention, mostly me to get on the back and ride.

I love the light and the warmth of late spring. My motivation is rising again and I am cherishing all this good weather to get myself in motion. Yesterday the beau and I went out for a hamburger after meat cravings made my hummus wrap insufficient. Maybe I went over in calories, but it was a good hamburger and my sensible lunches and breakfasts made up for it.

This is a crazy week, with so many possible events to go to and not nearly enough time. I want to do the Brew Walk downtown but the beau wants to support his friends at Go! Improv Comedy Theatre, so I'd be going alone. We can do the walks on other days, so it's not too bad. Maybe I'll still go, maybe not. Thursday is the major biking event for Ferndale but there's another event overlapping that, and yet another... I'll pop down the road a mile to the biking one, if only to make an appearance.

Friday is the baseball game, and I'm not terribly excited about that by itself, but we'll have some fun. Part of me wants to get away, though with 13(!) hours of driving ahead of me the weekend after next, that may not be practical.

In the meantime, I need to stop craving chocolate chip cookies. :(

I know someone who took classes at Go! Comedy too! It's a great group of people - they put on a benefit last year in memory for a freind's daughter who passed away.

Indeed, I've seen many a Go! comedy show. My beau performs in a troupe there and took a full year of classes.

Have you seen a Go! Comedy show? Dave and I went earlier this year, and it was a fun time.

Bad Me

Tuesday, May 15, 2012

I haven't started the spring into shape cardio bootcamp, even though I keep meaning to do so. I get home from my workout and want nothing more than to veg out, thinking about nothing and doing nothing. A clear sign I have to change up something in my routine!

Meanwhile, I'm angsting over how little calorie burning my water aerobics seems to be doing, that my weight is going no where, and I fear I'm one of those people who can work out oodles and lose nada / desire to eat more. Sick of reading all these articles in the Globe and Mail or New York Times saying almost 50% of the population appears to be 'non-responders' to working out.

I get the strong impression I could be one. Sigh. :/ One step forward, two steps back...

I've been biking before my water aerobics class -- I do minimum 60 minutes at 14 mph, if possible.

No... the saying is "one step back, two steps forward..." :-)

Maybe you can add some cardio in addition to your water aerobics? I didn't lose much at first either, and I still have weeks I don't lose, but I have noticed that doing some cardio and getting all sweaty seems to curb my cravings and munchies.

As you know, I suck at the challenge and end up having to do two or three at a time. But maybe that would work for you: like, just knock out an entire week's worth of videos in one sitting, and it would count as a full workout.

Warm Fuzzies

I realize why I love the Spark People community so much.

1 blog post + multiple comments = destroyed a bad day.

Hearing such positive thoughts and receiving support from people, many of whom are new friends or those I haven't written to or spoken to much, humbles me. Talk about being all misty-eyed. Sparkers, you are indeed one of the most wonderful resources I've ever found on this journey through life and I hope I can give back what you have given me when I needed it.

From all corners of me, thank you. I cannot tell you all how much I appreciate the kind words, and the depths of my gratitude for your amazing attitudes.
