Committments and priorities...

Thursday, September 12, 2013

When I logged in to blog tonight, I reread my blog about Augusts goals and life throwing you a curve...I thought at the time that the rescheduling of my knee surgery was a hindrance to completing my August goals. Little did I know then, but it was the best thing that could have happened.

Having my surgery done early and my healing well under way, I was ready to meet my next challenge...having my mom move in with us for awhile. Having another person added to the household can be a challenge under the best of circumstances, but Mom and I together is never the best of circumstances...Mom has mental health issues as well as the health challenges associated with aging. My siblings and I have tried to be there for her when she needs us but not be manipulated and taken advantage of as has sometimes been the case in the past.

Everything seems to be thrown to the wayside as I try to get her into a daily routine and blend her into our household. Of course, all the emotions of past hurts come rushing back and we all know how food addicts deal with that!! emoticon

So I sat down and had a chat with myself about priorities and commitments. Of course my family is a priority, but how can I take care of them if I am not here? Don't I deserve to be a priority too? And I have made a commitment to my mother, but I also made one to myself and my spark friends.

I have decide to make the "commitment" to my health a "priority". Doesn't that seem like the obvious thing to do?

I agree that there is no caretaking that is helpful unless the caretaker is in a healthy place....so make sure to schedule the time for you, and schedule times for others to be in the helping seat while you go for a walk, go to a store, read a book at the library, walk in the woods, take a bike ride....whatever brings you pleasure. Double your pleasure, double your fun, to be able to deal with the challenges you now are facing! emoticon

I experienced similar 'pains' when my MIL moved in after she could no longer care for herself due to alzheimer's...you MUST take time for yourself, so get to working on a schedule so you do just that.... emoticon

Back in the swing of things...

Monday, August 26, 2013

Completed my 2nd PT session this a.m. Feeling good and looking forward to accomplishing some goals this week. I got a new Biggest Loser DVD (new to me) from the library and plan on giving it a try tonight. It's Power Walk so hopefully it will not be too had on the knees.

Let you all know what I think about it! emoticon

Update on August's goals...

Wednesday, August 21, 2013

So sometimes life throws you a curve...my scheduled surgery on the 28th was moved up to the 19th. What does that do for my August goals?

Instead of getting my walking in, I am sitting with my leg up and ice on my knee in the lazy-boy. My walking consists of hobbling to the bathroom and short trips around the house. However, it seems like a lot of work to just get dressed in the morning!

As for my other goals, I am eating breakfast (and lunch and supper) at home--so that is a definite advantage.

Since I am off work, I have been organizing things around the house (with hubby's help)
And I have time to spend as the new team leader for the Nifty & Thrifty team.

So even when you are thrown a curve, it can be a curve towards your goals if you choose to see it that way.

The most important August goal is to Get Healthy, and the surgery is taking you on the way to more mobility. You go girl! emoticon

Knee surgery done!

Got thru the knee surgery yesterday and it wasn't as bad as I thought. Haven't needed any pain meds and moving pretty good. PT on Thursday and I am eager to get back to walking with much less discomfort! emoticon

This certainly caught my attention. I have hurt my knee kayaking, and being a typical nurse have not gone to the doctor. Self diagnosing myself, I feel I have a torn cartilage. It is getting better slowly, so prob won't go to doc. Glad to hear your surgery went well.

Cookout and life's surprises...

Saturday, August 17, 2013

We are attending a cook out tonight for my son's karate class. Bringing tomato and cucumber salad. Hoping that there is a better protein besides hot dogs!

This weekend has been all messed up. My surgery was supposed to be on August 28th. The Dr.'s office called yesterday just as we were going out the door and they had a cancellation. Now it is on Monday afternoon! And school doesn't start till Tuesday but daycare is closed. Guess my ds will just come with us. He is almost 10, and its just outpatient so he should be ok.

So I have been trying to get a week's worth of chores done in one weekend. School supplies are done, tomatoes are frozen--those that are ripe now anyway. I am trying to plan out some meals and healthy snacks for a couple days and get that ready.

Here I thought this was a pretty calm weekend! Such is life! emoticon
