The Race - The Fear - The Body Electric

Tomorrow is my first ever official 5K race

There is a core fear part of me that doesn't want to go - that doesn't want to run in front of people - a part of me that feels kind of silly to even try this - that part of me wants to stay home tomorrow

There is another part - the wimpy girl - who says 49 degrees at race start is too cold (she ignores things like the fact this is a Fall Frolic - and the fact that the body tends to warm after exercise) - she is also the one that stresses over the fact that I am battling a cold, but I did the "neck check" and I passed, so no worries there

And of course (of course!) - my beautiful body electric has decided to become this perfectly timed machine - why?!? - after so many years of betraying me and letting me down - and even after giving me hope last month by extending the length of the last visit

Racer ladies, how do you handle this - especially if you have very heavy cycles?

    OK, first off. I ran a race on New Years Day 3 years ago and it was -30 degree wind chill factor (and on the seacoast!!!). Driving back from the race my friend and I notice that the ski slopes were closed because of a weather advisory so...NO EXCUSES! If you are from that area you are used to a chilly fall morning!!! More the reason to run! emoticon

Secondly, the last thing you do before a race should be pee, so with your Ultra tampon by your side (you get what I mean) you should be fine for the 1/2 hour-hr that it takes to complete the race. I also recommended wear black pants. Get to the race 1/2 hr early if it is a well attended race so you can make sure to do the bathroom stop...before you start! I'm really not "yelling" at you I'm just really excited and hope I help with my suggestions.

    You're going to do great! I've already mapped out my route and I'll be cheering you on from way down in TX!!! I have no advice on TOM, I may actually be having to deal with it tomorrow too, but as it would be the first day, it shouldn't be heavy. I would probably do what everyone here is saying, take some painkillers!

    Go to your race. You can do this. I know how nervewracking it can be! The first time I ran and even the walkers were passing me up was just horrible! But by the end I was happy and I loved it. You can do it, and you'll feel great afterwards.

As for the TOM...I say take a good big dose of ibuprofin ahead of time. Not only will it lull pain, but it stops your uterus from cramping and moving so much. I've never had to run duing the heavy part of TOM but that helps me in general. Good luck!

    I also have Mirena, so I haven't had to deal with TOM since before I got pregnant. I also always have had fairly easy TOM's, so I can't give much advice.
You are going to do great!!!!!! Just have fun with it!!!!! I can't wait to hear how much fun you had!!!!:-)

    I used to have very heavy cycles. I ended up getting a Mirena IUD and that stopped all that nonsense. I wish I had done it years ago. But that's not really an option for you tomorrow, is it? My advice? Painkillers designed for period pain. I used one containing Co-Dydramol and that worked great for me, it was hell without.

And tell that mean interior voice to shut it's piehole. I have every belief you can do it, I really do. Don't give up! Overcome! emoticon emoticon

since that day, I have resisted resisted full-out emotional eating - until today

today I succumbed

but tomorrow is just another day

    Aw! The emotional eating beast! He's an ugly one. I should know...I faced him a few times this week. The good news is it's easy to get him back into his cage, but it takes putting your foot down. I know you'll over power him because you are stronger. You are also aware of yourself and the impact food has in your life. Knowledge is power and you are a very smart woman!
Today is definitely a new day (thank goodness)! You can do it!

    Yay! I'm so happy you have such a good attitude about this and not letting it totally derail you from your plan. You are doing such a great job, and I bet if you just hop right back on track the slip up won't make a huge difference. Today is another day and you can choose to pick healthy food or not, exercise or not. I know you'll make great choices and leave the emotional eating behind! emoticon

    I actually have had a few emotional eating days in a row this week (including this morning), I need to snap out of it. I had a good streak for a while also, it's time to re-start. I like your attitude, just remember how good you feel treating your emotions without food... I'm going to focus on that today and get back on the horse.

    There is always a new day tomorrow. Great attitude! Rest, recharge, and jump back in when you are ready! I've had my "big cookie" day, and wine day, and let's see ... even fast food day. Like 800 Cal XXL Grilled Stuffed Burrito with steak lol. The reason you posted means you are ready to get back on the horse.

Busting Misconceptions: Swimming

I had this crazy idea that I loved swimming - but today, after a very challenging 20 minutes of lap swimming, as I nursed some seriously worked muscles in all sorts of places, I realized a few things:

1) this was actually the first time I've ever lap swam

2) I haven't swam much since I had swimming class my Freshman year in high school (1986 - uh, yeah like 25 years ago)

3) I'm kind of afraid of deep water (I had forgotten this, but I chose a lane along the wall, and I took my time and tried to relax - I can swim and tread water, but I actually experience a bit of panic when I know there is nothing but water below me)

4) I don't like to get water up my nose/in my eyes - so my strokes of choice were a modified breaststroke that kept my head above water and a back stroke - I also like side stroke, but I could tell my muscles weren't strong enough for that today - I suppose this is why people buy goggles and nose plugs - but it is autumn, so good luck for me finding those items this time of year

So yeah, I'm really not a swimmer, never have been, only did so well in the class in high school because getting anything less than an A for a physical fitness class would have upset me

But I love swimming, and I love how my muscles are crying out in all directions today - I'm going to start doing it once a week, and maybe add a second day when I get better at it

    I love swimming, too, but it's so expensive here in Germany - and I don't like having to drive somewhere to get my exercise. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it!) When I'm in Florida, though, I become a water baby and love swimming laps in the pool at the Wellness Center.

I see someone already suggested ordering nose plugs and stuff on the internet...what did we do before we had those options!?

    This sounds like something I could write! haha! Except that I love deep water. I do love to swim, but do NOT swim straight! If I'm in a big pool and try to swim laps, I always run into people/the side/etc. We have a above ground pool (15X30) that I swam laps in this summer. Every time I was getting a good rhythm, it was time to turn around. It took me 50 (!) laps to get to 20 minutes of swimming! Now, if I was at the lake, I could swim a long long way and think nothing of it. Sigh. Our town only has one indoor pool, at the hotel, and it is FRIGID. Hmmm, we may not even have that come to think of it... the roof caved in this summer after our torrential rains that flooded half the area. Anyhooo... good for you for swimming! Have a blast!!!

I love swimming, too. Er, I mean, I love paddling around in the water. And floating. And stuff. Because, I don't actually know how to SWIM swim.....I'm taking lessons next summer.

Everything you could possibly want for a great swim workout. I like the Sporti antifog goggles. Silicon cap. Kickboard. Treat swimming like a C25K plan. Alternate freestyle laps with kick laps just as you did running and walking intervals on C25K. You will be going the distance in no time!

    I see many similarities here to my own misconceptions about swimming! I LOVE IT! And have I ever done a workout of lap swimming? Once, 10+ years ago. I ached all over so bad I never went back. But I love swimming! haha! That reminds me that it really is a great workout, I should try it again sometime soon! CONGRATS on shaking up your exercise! Once again you inspire me!!! emoticon

    if you relax in the water, like you were lying in bed, there is no way you will sink. but if you tense up, you will go down a bit, then it's easier to get water in places you rather would not. try it!

    I was a competitive swimmer for five years in middle and high school and I loved every bit of it, but it is DEFINITELY hard on your muscles. My aunt is a massage therapist and she used to give me sports massages on my back and legs every single week (those are the super hard, work the kinks out massages). But oddly, I get water in my nose far more during backstroke than I ever do in ones with my head under water... :D

The Difference Four Years Can Make - A Hiking Tale

Yesterday I hiked a challenging trail at a local National Park (you can click here if you wish to see pictures of the trail and learn more about it

The trail is 1.6 miles one way up a large bluff - with lots of steep inclines and switch backs - according to the website, there is an elevation change of 435 feet - I have climbed this trail a couple times about 4 years ago when I was the fittest I had ever been - I probably weighed between 245 and 250 at the time, but I had been exercising, and so I was able to make it to the top as long as I took some breaks to catch my breath

Yesterday I climbed that trail, by myself, all the way to the top without stopping once! The last time I had attempted it alone was October of 2007 and I made it to the top but I stopped numerous times along the way - I don't know how long it took me then, but I did record yesterday's time for the round trip - 1 hour, 6 minutes and 30 seconds - going up it took me 34:45, coming down was a little shorter

Here are a couple of pictures - since I didn't take my good camera with me and only had my phone, one of these pictures is actually from 2007, but since they are both October, they look about the same

I want to try to do this a few more times before the weather turns bad - it really gets the heart pumping and the thigh muscles burning - plus it is a really pretty, peaceful walk - and the views from the top are astounding

    That is awesome! I need to explore my surroundings and find places to hike. I used to know loads of places, I need to remember them since I haven't thought about them in years (oops, maybe decades)! Thanks for the pics!!! The trail looks amazing, and so do you! :D YAY side-by-sides!!!

We have a hiking place about 2 hours away that I really want to try again. I did it a couple years ago and it was miserable compared to my teens and early 20s. I really want to go back and try it now that I'm in shape!! Maybe I'll take pictures like you and show the difference!

My Jeans Can Hold Their Own On The Line

Hi all! Tomorrow I expect to update my now black page with my new goals, intro, etc - the first Tuesday of the month is always my measurement/picture day, so that seems appropriate :)

In the meantime, and before posting a most awesome blog which I hope to post tonight about a hike I took yesterday, I wanted to share something from today's laundry

When I went out to bring in the laundry from off the line, I noticed my jeans hanging next to my husband's - and for the first time, I had the thought that they looked "normal" - and mind you, they were actually my 14s - (the 12s are queued at the washer right now)

His jeans are a lot to measure up to - his little size 30 waist jeans that fit his smack-in-the-middle-of-normal BMI body (very loosely now though because he has lost weight too as a by-product of my endeavors)

By the way, this is one reason my page is down right now for revisions - I have come to realize lately that my goals were too narrow - when I started Sparking back in March, I just wanted to lose 40 lbs by my 40th birthday (which is now almost 4 months away and I'm about 5 lbs short of that goal) - and my "ultimate" goal at the time was to fit into size 16 jeans - the problem was, I didn't have a plan for the long term, and I didn't understand how important goals are to living your life in the direction of your dreams - now I do

SparkPeople has reignited my joy for living - and I want my page to reflect that

I need to get motivated to do it. You are very right in knowing how important it is to keep sight of short AND long term goals and to know the overall direction you want to be heading in.   i did the same thing, but the other way around xD i put my goals to far ahead of time, so i had to make some shorter term goals. I dont think im going to hit my shorter term goal to be honest, however, I'm striving harder to hit it than if i was trying for the long term goal. You are doing ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!
