A Busy Day....

Saturday, September 08, 2012

Today was a busy day for me. Hubby and I went out to breakfast and I left from there to do my deep water exercise class. After the class I drove home, finished the part of my breakfast that I didn't eat and logged onto the computer. An hour later we drove to St. Pete to see hubby's sister. His sister has a birthday this week and we wanted to take her out for a birthday dinner now since she'll be away for her actual birthday. I must say that I did a great job of eating! We went to Red Lobster and I ate 1/2 of my broiled flounder, a tossed salad without croutons (with very little dressing) and steamed broccoli. I had a very small slice of spice birthday cake for dessert. It was a busy and pleasant day!

Training To Work At The Polls

Friday, September 07, 2012

This morning I skipped my water classes to attend Voter Training (to work at the polls). I had hoped to be a volunteer in November during the election. I live several blocks from the Supervisor of Elections Office for my county so figured it wouldn't be a big deal to get there. Wrong! For some reason they sent me 16 miles away to another city for training. Since the road that I took to get there was under construction, you can imagine my frustration level by the time I arrived. The next thing that happened was I couldn't find a parking place. I asked about handicapped parking and was told to try a parking lot down the street. By this time I was in a bad mood and late to the meeting. (I despise being late!)

I walked toward the entrance of the building and one of the greeters smiled and said good morning and I returned his greeting. He asked how I was this morning and I replied, "Frustrated and angry!" Being this way was out of character for me so I felt even worse. He said, "Let me help you to have a better day." He proceeded to walk me to the door and open it for me. What a wonderful man! He did indeed help me to have a better day! You never know how the little things you do for others affect them. If it weren't for this man, I would have had a terrible day.

Once inside the building, I signed in at the registration desk. I was given an application packet and asked for my Social Security Card. I didn't have it with me, so I'm taking a copy of it to the Supervisor of Elections Office later today. I was also reminded to turn in my resume with my application. I asked the person at the desk why I was attending training in this city when I live near the Supervisor of Elections office. He seemed surprised that I had been directed so far away from my house too. He told me that there is training in my home town too. That training is on Monday evening. Then I remembered that they messed up at the polls when I voted in August. They listed me as a mail in ballot instead of being able to vote at the polls. I registered a complaint because I had to go through a bunch of unnecessary paperwork just to be able to vote. Perhaps this was payback? I'd hate to think that anyone could be that petty.

I sat through a presentation detailing all of the poll positions and what the responsibilities were for every position. I checked off several that were of interest on my application. Then the Elections Supervisor discussed the pay scale for every position. What??? The last time I worked at the polls was 1971 and we all volunteered. Of course I worked the polls in another state so maybe things work differently here. I can't imagine having to pay people to help with an election!!! Alas, we have arrived at a place where all time is money, I suppose. I tried to convince the staff to hire me as a volunteer but they wouldn't do it. It has to be paid or you can't work there. That's why they needed my Social Security Card.

I sat and listened patiently and kept waiting for the training to begin. After about 35 minutes, I found out that the actual training takes place on a different day and time, if the Board of Elections accepts your application. It was interesting that the letter that I received called today's meeting "training". Okay, so I cleared my schedule today for a 35 minute presentation about the jobs available at the polls.

Today was a real education for me. It is good that the poll workers are being carefully screened. Hopefully the screening process will eliminate those who want to taint the American election results. That is a very good thing. If something happens during the voting, the officials know who you are, where you live and have access to your background information. I'm glad that they are taking everything seriously because I think we need to. I do think that the communication about the training could have been more clear and efficient. Perhaps by working there myself, I can make a difference.

Please exercise your rights as a citizen of this great country and get out and vote this coming November. Wouldn't it be great if people were to turn out in record numbers? Let your voice be heard!!!

I am surprised about the pay, too. This reminds me of my frustrations every time I get called for jury duty. It takes me almost an hour to get to Bartow as I live in the very NE section of Polk right on the Osceola and Lake county lines. And there is no easy road - it's all a series of stop and go with heavy traffic, inadequate parking, and slow lines with a lot of hurry up and wait in order to be sent home at the end of the day feeling like you lost a day. OK, I'm through whining for now!

Rewarding Myself With Exercise Apparel

Thursday, September 06, 2012

I was reading an article the other day about people who lost 100+ pounds. One of the things several people rewarded themselves with was exercise apparel. This made me pause and think about rewards. As many of you know, I spend around two hours (give or take 20 minutes) in the pool exercising 5-6 days a week. I've been going through swimsuits like crazy due to the chlorine in the pool water. One by one the participants of my water classes have purchased chlorine resistant swimsuits because the cost of constantly replacing our suits gets expensive. I've said many times over the last year that I was going to purchase that type of suit. I even purchased 3 such suits in May, only to have them "bite the dust". Surprisingly enough, I received a full refund for all three suits! I really have been working at being consistent with my workouts. This week after reading the article, I ordered 2 high quality suits for myself as a reward. I ordered the suits from 2 different companies because I wasn't sure about the fit even though I ordered them by my measurements and not clothing size. One of the tracking numbers says that a suit should be delivered tomorrow. I am so excited! If it actually fits, I will be able to wear it to my Saturday deep water class! I can't wait!

Very smart to reward yourself with something that makes you feel even better about exercising. Well done!!

No Water Class Today So I Just Did My Own!!!

Monday, September 03, 2012

Today being the American holiday, Labor Day, meant no water aerobics classes at the Y. My way to dealing with it was to call my exercise buddy and arrange to work out on our own today. She was surprised at how much fun it was. She also did the Y's Zumba-thon for an hour before coming to the pool. I decided just to do an extra hour while I was waiting for her to finish with Zumba. My buddy had trouble with muscle cramping while she was in the pool. Perhaps her muscles were way too tired to do 85 minutes of water exercise after Zumba. I think I was wise to sick with just one activity. I have two knee replacements and my gut tells me that Zumba might have been too much.

It turned out to be a great day with exercise after all! When I got home, hubby and I went out for lunch at Sonny's. I had some pulled pork and the salad bar. I use chopped beets instead of putting salad dressing on my salad. Sonny's almost always has the beets so I really enjoyed my meal!!! What a fun day1

to my surprise our water aerobics class actually met this morning and all but one (broken wrist) were there. This was the best workout since joining the class. Then after shopping with my workout buddy she suggested we go to the pool for our workout. So I got in two water workout today.

I'll have to try that chopped beets for salad dressing. I think I'd like that. I did the Zumbathon last year and it was a blast. Today I stayed home to clean house. Can't say I accomplished all I intended, but did make some progress. Wish I could have done both. Wish I was more efficient at housekeeping.

Glad you had a great day for water exercise. Very creative to do your own! Keep up the good work! Appreciate your comments on my blog, too.

Still No Migraines

Saturday, September 01, 2012

It has been 8 days since my RFA procedure. During that time I have had sore lumps at the site of the procedure and some serious twinges, but, drum roll please..... No Migraines. At first the back of my head was so sore that it hurt to move the head at all. I continued to work out - Tuesday through Saturday (today). I even started using weights on Thursday just to see what would happen. I had twinges but I rested after working out and no migraines developed.

Something else positive happened and that is the stiffness in my shoulders goes away. I may initially stiffen but if I rest, it diminishes rather quickly. Before the procedure I had stiff shoulders for years and they would stay that way 24/ 7/ 365. I hope this stays this way because it is great!!!

I have a doctor's appointment on Tuesday, September 4, with the doctor who did my procedure. He will evaluate my progress and we will go from there. It should be interesting!

So glad you have had no migraines. Let's hope it stays that way. Good your shoulders have relaxed. (I could use that, too.) Hope your doctor's appointment provides you just what you need as far as information and treatment!!

I appreciate your comment about more exercise just being more. I'm trying to find the right balance. What I really want is optimum health. If I can achieve some fitness goals and awards, great, but there is far more to health than fitness.

Glad you are my SparkFriend!! -Marsha

Congrats on the absent migraines! I too suffer from almost daily migraines. Exercising really brings on the feeling that one is about to start and it scares me! My neurologist prescribed Topamax which turned me into a blabbering, absent minded, depressed sleep-a-holic. I HATED it. It seemed like that was all he want to do, put me on these mind-numbing meds. At $60 a pop for each office visit, I had to stop seeing my doctors altogether. We ran through my savings in no time between neurologists, ENTs, cardiologists and tests/procedures/meds and the pain itself left me unemployed.

Enough of my whining, I'm so happy you have some relief. I know how frustrating they can be! That was the point of my above pity party. LOL!
