Occipital And Trigger Point Blocks

Tuesday, June 05, 2012

After a vigorous workout this morning, I trekked over to Tampa General for my neurologist's appointment. I had occipital and trigger point blocks (8 shots total). The purpose of the blocks is to numb my neck, head and top shoulder muscles, which causes them to relax a significant amount. This relaxation reduces headache, neck and shoulder pain. When they asked me what my pain level was I said it was a 3 out of a possible 10 (10 being the highest). After she did the blocks, I was positively giddy due to lack of pain. The feeling of no pain made me realise that I had indeed been feeling some substantial pain. Apparently I was just so used to it so didn't consciously feel it. That was very weird! My doctor told me that this is often the case with chronic pain. She wasn't surprised due to my history. Wow, what an eye opener!

Hopefully the effects of my blocks will last for several weeks. My next block will be on August 7. I'm interested to see how I do with this. My doctor did tell me to use only the small weights in the water and limit my land weights to 5-6 pounds per weight. She feels that anything weighing more will cause my muscles to tighten too much and undo any good effects I receive from my blocks. I agree, will limit my weights accordingly and be sure to do no more than 3 strengthening sessions per week. I told her that I was resting between strength sessions and she approved. I'm very glad that I rested this past Sunday too. That allowed 2 days of rest between strength training sessions. I can feel the difference today.

I feel excited at the prospect of having reduced pain. I hope this will work. I will certainly do my part by limiting the amount of weight in my strength training and resting between sessions. I will monitor my pain levels after doing workouts and rest accordingly.

That's great that you got out from under that pain. Hope it lasts a long time. Paying attention to the medical advice about weights makes sense. I know you have improved a great deal and I pray for your continued healing. You deserve it.

Thank you so much for the kind comments on my page. So nice of you to pass on such a compliment. -Marsha

Rest Day Pays Off

Monday, June 04, 2012

I am so glad that I took a rest day yesterday! My body was very tired - more so than I could feel. When I woke up this morning I felt fine. I went and worked out but not vigorously. By the time I got home, I had delayed onset muscle soreness from Saturday's workout. I felt stiff even though I used no weights today and didn't jump around at all. I took a nice long nap and felt much better. Tomorrow I will work out with weights again knowing that I have rested. I should be back up to speed. Listening to your body and rest accordingly pays off!

Taking A Rest Day

Sunday, June 03, 2012

Today I'm taking a day off from heavy exercise. I must admit that I feel a bit restless. With the hot weather, I could really enjoy a dip in the pool. However, knowing myself as I do, a quick dip could possibly turn into a vigorous exercise routine. Sigh, so I will stay out of the water today because I know I need the rest. Perhaps I will take a walk later in the day when it starts to cool off or I could run the vacuum and then shampoo the carpet. We'll see!

I decided against vacuuming or shampooing the carpet. I walked the dogs - 2 short 5 minute walks - but once I relaxed I really wasn't up to doing anything else. I managed to listen to my body!

Does a day of rest include vacuuming or walking? Do you really need rest or light exercise? I bet you know as you listen to your body well. Do what is best. You've suffered from over-doing before. Take care, Marsha

Exercise Is Fun Again!

Friday, June 01, 2012

When I was much younger, I did interval step aerobics and aerobics dance/exercise classes. The one thing that I detested was sweating and having my clothes feel like they were wringing wet throughout my exercise session. I often ended up by taking several showers per day. The exercise made me feel more energetic and I was slim and toned. I led a very active life and had a healthy diet.

Now that I'm a little bit older, my joints protest under the pace I used to keep. I knew that I needed to discover some way of exercising without damaging my body as it started the aging process. I have discovered the beauty of water exercise! In the water, I can once again feel the freedom of movement that I used to feel on land. As a bonus, since I'm already wet, I'm not bothered by sweat pouring off my body or clothing that is soaked in perspiration. I really like that! I'm finding that I am staying in the pool for longer and longer periods of time. The exercise feels so good that I want to work out. I'm also making friends with other people who choose to exercise in water, so we have something in common from the start. Not only do I get a great workout, I have a chance to have exercise buddies and social contact. It is a win/win situation. Exercise is fun again!

Take care. Hope to see you soon.( I plan to be at the Y 9:20-11:20 Tuesday and Thursdays and longer on Saturdays.) -Marsha
