Tired But Pleased After My Tests

Thursday, May 17, 2012

Yesterday, I had my endoscopy and colonoscopy. For the first time since 1998, my stomach appeared normal. By this I mean that the red streaks and erosions are finally gone! I only had one polyp removed during the colonoscopy this time, which is also an improvement. I also didn't get sick from the anesthetic and my blood pressure was steady. This was an improvement from the fluctuating blood pressure that I had during my September surgery. Of course they used a different kind of anesthetic this time which was a short term anesthetic. I did wake up during the first procedure and opened my eyes. I groaned with pain and looked at the doctor and they put me right back under, thank goodness. I'm glad it is all finished. I'm thoroughly sick of being poked and prodded!

My progress, shown with these tests, proves a healthier lifestyle is working where I can't see it every day. There is more than one way to measure progress on my journey to health.

Accomplishments In The Pool

Tuesday, May 15, 2012

I went to the pool and do 100 minutes of swimming and water aerobics this morning. I'm so proud of myself! I was able to swim 15 full laps (down and back) of the Olympic sized pool. I forced myself to do it slowly so that I wouldn't burn myself out. This is a big deal for me! I feel that I am gaining stamina and strength. The last time I swam laps was in the late 1980's before I had problems with my spine, arms, shoulders and knees. I've come a long way since the doctor said that I was cleared to go back into the water on December 10th. I'm thrilled with my progress!

Later when I got home I started my prep for tomorrow's tests - endoscopy and colonoscopy. It is unpleasant but necessary. The prep for the tests is actually worse that the actual tests themselves since I will be sedated for the tests and shouldn't feel a thing. Hubby's got my back on this one and will be watching over me. I'm so lucky to have him in my life!!! It will feel good for me to get these tests over with and to get back on my normal exercise schedule.

Oh, one final thing. The allergist's office called yesterday morning. The CT scan showed issues with my sinuses. Not a big surprise as I was positive the issues were there. It had to be embarrassing for her office to call me after she poo poo-ed my assertions that I had issues that could only show on a CT scan. Perhaps she will take me more seriously from now on into the future!

Ugh! Tests, Tests, And More Tests!

Sunday, May 13, 2012

Last Thursday I had my nerve conduction test on my left arm. As we suspected, I have ulnar nerve neuropathy. It isn't severe enough to trigger the test but if it flares up badly again I'm supposed to call my neurologist after 3 months and she will retest the nerve to see if it can be fixed surgically. She suggested that I do a heavy workout before coming in the next time so the test will more accurately read the nerve damage. This time it didn't show on the test but showed on the actual physical exam of my arm. She said that she knows that it's there and I need to avoid resting my elbow on anything and sleeping with my arm too bent. Easier said than done!!! This has made me hyper aware of my body position. The doctor said that this is a very good thing. We'll see how I do.

I also had a sinus scan on Friday to see if there is still an issue there. I will follow up on that in June. I have elevated my bed a little bit more and it is helping my stuffy nose.

Tomorrow is female wellness day. Oh joy! My least favorite day of the year. Necessary but not very pleasant. I will also follow up on that sometime in June.

This coming Wednesday I am having my endoscopy and colonoscopy. Two other tests that are necessary but unpleasant. I will prevail through these too. Keeping my fingers crossed that I show continued improvement on both of these tests as well.

By the time Wednesday is finished, I will be thoroughly sick of being poked and prodded by doctors!!! Heck, I'm sick of it already and I haven't even started this week's schedule yet. LOL
I'm not real keen on spending hours in doctor's offices. This too shall pass!

It will feel good to get back on my exercise schedule by the end of the week. Of course the following week we will be traveling to upstate New York to bury my father-in-law's ashes, now that the ground has thawed. The good news is that I will get to see my daughter since she will be coming with us. I'm really looking forward to a nice visit with her! I'm so proud of her. She is a delight! While we are there, we will take the time to visit my mother's grave too. On the way up as well as on the way back, we will stop and visit a very dear aunt of mine. My aunt will be 90 this summer. I can't believe it! We're looking forward to seeing her too. We really enjoy her company.

As you can see, the next couple of weeks will be very busy for me. My plan is to keep as much on schedule as possible. I will take snacks on our trip and try to work some serious exercise into my schedule. I will miss my water aerobics classes a lot. (Along with all of my friends there!) I am determined to stay on my program and continue my quest for a healthy life despite traveling.

You would think they could make some of these tests easier to get through - sometimes I wonder if they delight in torturing us!

Taking Care Of Business Today

Thursday, May 10, 2012

I'm finally starting to feel a little bit better. It has been over three weeks since I first got sick and I'm getting back to normal. My stomach has stopped hurting and my sinus infection seems to be gone. Hooray! I've been to water aerobics class twice this week and it felt good.

Today I'm going to Tampa for a nerve conduction test on my arms. This is just to see if the pain/numbness I've been continuing to have is a residual from my issue with the cervical spine and left arm nerves. If it is, the doctor will do a simple out patient procedure to release the nerves and the arm pain should lessen. If not, I'll just have to live with it and be very careful. Either way, knowledge is power and I'd rather know what is causing the pain/numbness.

    Hey Girl!
Interested in hearing the results of your nerve conduction test and what the outpatient procedure involves to release them.

Glad you are over your sinus thing.
Awful when you can't breathe!
