Starting To Feel Better

Wednesday, May 02, 2012

Today, I'm finally starting to feel a bit better. At long last!!! I started off last week with a sinus infection then morphed into the stomach/intestinal flu. That took me through this past weekend. By Sunday night my ears were hurting, my head was aching, I felt dizzy and I was all stuffy again.
I went to the doctor on Monday and she said that the flu was gone but now I have a sinus infection and 2 red ears. Wonderful! My allergist changed my antibiotic and added a steroid pill to help my ears clear up. Monday and Tuesday I walked a little bit but felt so exhausted that I went back to bed. Today I'm feeling quite a bit better but am still very spacey. I will try walking around the block again slowly and see if I can build my strength back up. I had hoped to get to the pool this week but perhaps that isn't such a great idea. I will take it easy and listen to my body. Next week is soon enough to get back into the water.

On a positive note, I've lost about 5 pounds over the last week. (It was 11 pounds but I was dehydrated and with fluids six pounds came back on.)

Perhaps A Clue To My Fatigue

Tuesday, April 24, 2012

Today I met with a new allergist. I liked her very much. We talked about my medical history, specifically my allergy issues current and past. Then my doctor did a physical exam. It appears that I have an allergy induced sinus infection. I chronically have sinusitis but when I am exposed to lots of allergens, it can become a full blown infection.

This spring the pollen in our area has been off the charts. We didn't really have a winter with a hard freeze per se, so the trees, grasses, weeds, bushes and flowers are confused and making pollen like crazy. The dry, breezy weather just makes it easier for the pollen to fly around and stay in the area. Consequently, my allergies have been kicking my butt. Thus, my primary doctor and I decided that I needed a new allergist who is a doctor not an LPN under a doctor's care. I was only too eager to go to my appointment as I have been feeling draggy.

I had a sinus x-ray, blood tests for allergies and am scheduled for a breathing test tomorrow. She put me on an antibiotic and nebulizer treatments and gave me a steroid shot. Within twenty minutes of getting the shot, my nose was cleared and I can now breathe! Yea! I see her again in 10 days. I sure hope the treatment works. I think that I will be feeling more energetic soon!

So glad you got fast relief. The pollen has been kicking me down this year, too. Sure hoping this allergist lives up to your expectations and needs. It is no fun to feel fatigue all the time. Happy healing!! -Marsha

You Can Do It And Come Through It, Just Start By Taking The First Step!

Friday, April 20, 2012

I've been asked quite often lately, "With all of the health issues you've had, how did you cope and come through it so well?" I've struggled to explain that I'm a survivor and that I'm worth fighting for because I'm worth the effort. Many people don't understand so I'll explain it by posting my mantra.

You can do it and come through it, just start by taking the first step.

I say this over and over and over to myself as I struggle to meet my goals. After the first step I take a second, third, forth and fifth step and just continue until I meet a goal. Sometimes the going can get really rough but if I give up, I'm guaranteed to lose. The way I win is to continue my struggle until I reach my goal - no matter how long it takes!

Whenever I meet a goal, I set a new goal and begin again. I consider life to be a long term learning opportunity. I can always set a goal for something and go through the process of achieving that goal. To stop learning and changing or as I like to say "polishing myself" is to stop living. I look at life as an interesting puzzle with endless possibilities. I ask myself this question, "What do I want to be and how do I want to achieve that?" Naturally our home is filled with butterflies. They symbolize my constant rebirth process. I am always a work in progress. It is a life long journey not a destination.

Thanks for sharing. When I first started this journey several years ago I had not exercised for most of my life and I literally sang (to myself) like Elmo from Sesame Street: "Just put one foot in front of the other and soon you'll be walking out the door." It got me started and I still laugh when I think of it but Elmo had a good plan!

Paying Attention To My Health Is Paying Off

Thursday, April 19, 2012

My focus on my own health is paying off! Last week, I had outstanding lab results. Today, I went for my mid year check up, with my neurosurgeon. My doctor needed to check the bone growth on the fusion that I had in September. The last time it was checked, in December 2011, I was healing ahead of schedule. Now, my bone is almost healed! There was just a tiny area of white on the x-ray this morning (the white area was the area that still needs to heal). My doctor was very pleased with my progress. I won't have to be checked again for six more months. My neurosurgeon took most of the restrictions off but I do have to have a nerve conduction test on my left arm. The reason I need this test is that I still have residual pain in the areas of the ulnar and radial nerves due to the length of time that my arms were unable to move. If surgery has to be done, this time it will be out patient and I will have a five inch scar on the underside of my arm. This I can live with!

The sad news that I got this morning is that my neurosurgeon is leaving to do an additional fellowship of some kind at Ohio State University. His last day is June 1st. I'm bummed and just feel a sense of panic at this news. After all, he was the first neurosurgeon (out of 4) that was able to find out what was wrong with me and fix it! Hopefully he will turn my case over to someone who is as kind, brilliant and gentle as he is. He will be a hard act to follow.

Sorry you are still having residual pain, but it is SO VERY GOOD to hear of your continued progress. I saw you @ the Y yesterday, but I was with Wellness Coach and didn't get to communicate. Glad to see you so active. That is a bummer that your neurologist is leaving. Here's hoping the replacement is exactly as you described. However, if not, I have total faith that you will keep looking until you find exactly what you need. Continue to take such great care of yourself!! (Sorry the HR monitor won't work for you. Thought it was worth a try. )-Marsha
