The Sugar and Salt Connection

I made an interesting discovery as I began to read more food labels. Many things that are heavy on sugar are also heavy on salt. I knew about salad dressings, canned goods, frozen meals, cheese and other dairy products. What I had never looked closely at were energy bars, cereal, baked goods and sweets. Depressing but true is the reality that most things that you buy at the grocery store contain sodium and high fructose corn syrup. One way I can get away from them is to make my own food and to eat more fresh fruits and veggies. Then, I know for sure what is in my food. It may take a little longer to prepare but I'm worth the effort!

    You're so right. I very rarely use prepackaged or canned food anymore. If I use canned I rinse the salt off. I'm even starting to make my own salad dressings and it is not as hard as I thought it would be.

in so many things hidden and unexpected
i have been tracking it for a few years now....

    Yeah, it's been a real wake-up call since I started tracking my sodium a few months ago. I mean, I knew that pre-made foods tended to have more sodium in them, but how much more was certainly a shock! Now I have all these wretched canned soups I can't bring myself to eat... drat it.

Love/Hate Relationship With My Scale

Eek! I got on the scale this morning and my weight is up again. I'm thinking it is perhaps due to salt because that is usually what it is. However, combined with my fatigue, it may be my thyroid, again. Sigh, I guess it's time to call my doctor. I keep putting it off because I'm waiting for my body to stabilize since I've just come off two migraine medications that speed up my thyroid. My clothes are still fitting the same, thank goodness, so my scale doesn't rule my progress. I just feel frustrated today so it's time to take some action. I'm going to do the following:
1. Look at sugar content more carefully on the foods that I eat - especially added sugar/ corn syrup
2. Call my doctor and tell him I'm not feeling any better
3. Give myself a break and use other measures besides the scale to measure my progress
4. Focus on reducing my sodium intake
5. Reward myself for my efforts with a non-food reward

Feeling A Little Better Today!

I'm feeling a little bit better today - finally! I'm still tired but not the burning fatigue that I've been experiencing for the last two weeks. We got some rain the other day so perhaps that has helped my allergies because the rain washed the pollen out of the air. Whatever it is, I'll take it. I did 120 minutes of water exercise both yesterday and today. After I finish here, I'm going to rest and read.

    My allergies are not any better but glad to hear yours are. We finally got some rain up this end of the county tonight so I hope it helps.

Cutting Back On My Exercise

I'm still feeling tired but I went to water aerobics class this morning anyway. The water was warm and we had a substitute teacher because our regular teacher is sidelined with an injury. We did interval training today and really got our heart rates up. It was great. I did an additional 40 minutes of jogging and strength exercises beyond the class. My total for today is 85 minutes, which is cut way back from my usual 120-150 minutes. My goal is to see if I've been over exercising and causing myself to get too fatigued. We'll see.

Fatigue Is Kicking My Butt

For the last four or five days I have felt horribly fatigued. I decided to monitor the amount of exercise that I'm getting to see if that is causing it. I've tried to keep it two hours or less since I became aware of all of the fatigue. (leaning toward the or less part) It may be several other things. It could be that my thyroid medication needs to be adjusted again. The doctor and I are keeping a close watch on that one. If the fatigue doesn't disappear soon, I will call his office as we agreed and go in to see him and/or have some tests done. Another thing it could be is allergies. When I came out of the gym this morning after working out, my car was covered with yellow, pollen dust. Our weather has been so crazy that the trees are confused and have pollinated already. The last thing I can think of is that I may be fighting off some sort of illness. This could be related to allergies as well as working out too much. Perhaps I'm run down and just need to rest. For that reason I stayed out of the water yesterday and did a lot of walking and running errands instead. My plan is that I will keep a close watch on everything and if I don't improve within the next week, off to the doctor's office I will go. This is all in keeping with my goal to pay attention to the signals that my body is trying to send me.

    I cut wayyy back on exercise this weekend and don't feel a huge improvement. I ate more protein today and have a little more energy and am not nearly as cold. My guess is that the allergy issues and thyroid combined are responsible.

    Good plan. You are definitely right about the allergies. My sinus cough is back and I think the humidity drains energy, too. I felt tired last week and was concerned that my anemia was back so I had it checked and I am right where I should be so mine is being blamed on the allergies this time. So many factors to consider.
