Day 21 of Headache Treatment

Wednesday, June 16, 2010

Day 21 has been completed in the headache treatment plan. Week one of the maintenance level of medication is behind me. I can feel that the pain is very localized in three areas which is very strange. So far there have still been no pain spikes. That in itself is a miracle! The pain hasn't totally gone away but it is tolerable. I will do my intake interviews with the team at Tampa General the first two weeks of August. I'm eager to hear what they say. Although the drive is a bit of a hike for me, I suspect it will be well worth the effort once they come up with a management plan. Just look at how well I'm doing after only three weeks!!!

The additional good news is that I have also been referred to Tampa General Pain Management for the rest of my spinal issues. Having one place deal with all of your spinal pain and headache issues is ideal because a treatment for one area can aggravate another area. If the same practice handles all of it, then they can choose a plan that is less likely to ricochet pain to another area of the head or spine. They also believe in treating the root of the problem, not in just "putting a bandaid on it" or just throwing pills at it. That made me very happy because I'm a little afraid of some medications. I am aware that I may face surgery at some point in time, but I already was aware of that going into treatment. We'll see how this goes!

I hope this works out for you! Chronic pain is horrible, and the sight of relief of some sort in the offing has to be marvelous.

Saturday Morning Yard Sales

Saturday, June 12, 2010

This morning hubby and I got up and started going to yard sales in our town. We were hungry so we took a break and stopped for a healthy breakfast (got to love those tasteless egg whites!). After breakfast we got back into our car and drove around the adjoining areas looking for more bargains. I found one small thing for a dollar and we ran into some friends during our hunt for treasures.(That was an unexpected treat!) We didn't really find much today to buy. It was a fun way to spend a morning together, get plenty of walking in and enjoy each others company.

Sounds like a great morning! Now, I must defend egg whites. I very much like them. Of course, the ones I had this morning were with turkey bacon. Delicious. I know, I know... I did go over my sodium a bit today. Can't do that every day. I'm good if you average my week, though.

Day 12 of Headache Treatment

Saturday, June 05, 2010

I'm happy to say (knock on wood!) that in the last 12 days I haven't had one pain spike. How amazing is that? I'm taking two pills a day and by Tuesday I will be at maintenance dose. I've been very careful to avoid all of the movements that bring on the headaches but I'm going to have to face that issue eventually. I don't know whether they will want to do surgery or just have me continue to practice avoidance like I do now. The only problem that I see with the avoidance plan is that there may be a things that I'm unaware of that can bring on the headaches, which scares me a little. Right now the worst is lying on my back and pulling my knees to my chest. Poof! Instant headache! The doctors and specialists are trying to figure out where the headaches are coming from and they are having a problem determining whether they come from the neck or the head itself. (I have degenerative disk disease of the spine). They know that they can treat the pain part but they are still looking at the cause(s). I guess it's like a big puzzle to them and they are excited to have me enroll in the program so they can gather more information. I'll keep you posted on my progress.

One of the reasons lying down and pulling my knees to my chest is an issue is, that it is what the physical therapist recommends that I do for my lower back. My therapist has designed other things for me to do to deal with the lower back in an effort to avoid this movement. There are a few other movements that also trigger headaches such as looking down to read or do needle work, sleeping on my tummy and turning wrong or sharply to name a few. Thanks for all of your encouragement!

Thanks for the update. Sounds like you are doing well. Hope they can put the whole puzzle together and eliminate the pain. Avoidance may be an option. I guess you don't have to lie down and put your knees to your chest. But wouldn't it be great if they could fix it where you could do anything and would not have to worry.

Thanks, again, for all you do for our team. Take care, Marsha

Day Six Of Treatment

Sunday, May 30, 2010

Today is day six of my headache treatment. So far I haven't had any pain spikes but the headaches themselves, although less severe, are still there. On Tuesday my medication steps up one level. I will say that my sleep is much better because I'm not waking up with crushing pain in the middle of the night. The medication has two side effects. One seems to be a little fatigue (like I really needed more of that with hypothyroid! Oh well!) and the other is that it has decreased my appetite (hooray!). It would appear that I'm making good progress and I'm pleased. I'm very curious as to what will happen when I Tuesday rolls around. I'll keep you posted!

I also get some killer headaches. You might want to try accupressure points. They really help me a lot. I'm sure you can find them through google. Hope you feel better soon.

Spine Update

Tuesday, May 25, 2010

I got some great news yesterday! The USF pain program at Tampa General Hospital accepted me into their pain management system program. They also have developed a plan for me to deal with my continuous headaches! Yea! Just hearing that they could help me brought me a tremendous sense of relief. The first thing they did was give me medicine that was headache specific. Then they adjusted one of my other medications. I will be starting the new medications tonight so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Relief may be on the way!

I asked them if I can transfer my other spinal areas into their care and they said yes! I was ecstatic! I know that it takes me a little over an hour to get to an appointment there but they can do things for chronic pain there that most other places can't. Since they are a teaching center, their techniques are cutting edge so the treatments are better. The goal for their program is to get me as active as possible without the crushing pain. I will probably do my initial interviews with each of the 15 specialists in August because I have to have a two week period that I can devote to the program without any interruptions. In September, they will inject my head in 6-8 places in an effort to control the re-occurrence of the crushing headaches. I'm feeling very positive about my treatment. They have given me hope where I had none.
