Plugging Along

Wednesday, March 27, 2013

So far this has been a much better week. My physical therapist said that my pain problems were most likely caused by exactly what I thought. He was glad that I changed those exercise reps! Now, if I can just continue to have a good week, I'll be satisfied!

It Took All Weekend But I'm Feeling Better

Monday, March 25, 2013

It took all weekend, but I'm finally feeling better after Friday's Physical therapy session. I took a look at the number of reps I was doing on my home exercises and reduced a couple of them. I was shooting toward the top of the rep range because the exercises were ones that I had consistently been doing before my surgery. I realized that the amount I was doing before my surgery needed to be erased because the surgery made the whole situation different. I also made sure that my physical therapy sessions are more spread out. I am approaching today's physical therapy session more confidently. Than goodness I have natural analytical tendencies!
I think they saved my posterior end on this one!

Brutal Physical Therapy Today

Friday, March 22, 2013

For some unexplained reason, my physical therapy was brutal today. My therapist just explained that I am not even 2 weeks post-op so he was surprised that it didn't happen for all of my sessions this week. Sigh, I'm going to go crawl into bed now.

Thanks everyone for your support! I changed the way I was doing some of my at home exercises and spread out my physical therapy sessions so that I don't go two days in a row. I'm confident that I won't experience the extreme reaction that I had again (at least I hope not).

I'VE WORKED WITH A LOT OF PATIENTS WHO HAVE HAD KNEE, HIP, AND BACK SURGERY, AND I TELL THEM THAT YOU WILL HAVE GOOD DAYS AND DOWN DAYS. THIS WAS JUST A DOWN DAY. TOMORROW WILL BE A BETTER DAY. HANG IN THERE, SOON IT WILL JUST BE A BAD MEMORY. BY THE WAY I DIDN'T CATCH WHAT YOU HAD SURGERY ON. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Physical Therapy Will Not Kick My Butt!

Wednesday, March 20, 2013

I had my first day of physical therapy yesterday. My therapist started off by explaining that therapy for the rotator cuff is divided into phases. I am beginning phase one which is the passive phase. He handed me a printout to look over which listed my "at home" exercises as well as a few "tips to help you get started". In phase one, the therapist does all the moving of you relaxed arm. My follow up "at home" exercises are mainly stretches along with squeezing a ball. I thought to myself, "Okay, not a problem, I should be able to do this."

As we started the therapy, my therapist casually asked me if I had taken my pain medication. I had taken it so it shouldn't be a problem, right? Yikes! Now I know why my doctor gave me pain pills! Not only was my shoulder sore during the therapy, it was sore for hours afterward! Okay, time to do some serious pre-planning!

Tactic #1 For therapy days
Take pill one hour before therapy
Eat sparingly before therapy
Have a snack or meal an hour after therapy is over (or when nausea subsides)
Take additional pain medication before pain is out of control

Tactic #2 For non therapy days
Do loosening exercises after you shower and dress
Eat breakfast and relax
Begin exercises at least an hour after eating
Ice shoulder after exercises
Rest after exercises and determine if pain pill is needed

I have therapy both Thursday and Friday. I'm not sure how that will play out. I will use better pain control earlier in the day and during the afternoon so avoid letting the pain get out of control at night. The pain will not control me, I will control it! Physical therapy will not kick my butt! I have a plan and I will not be derailed!

I started PT for my rotator cuffs (left at least 75% worse than the rt. ) a week ago so I definitely feel your pain. Can I just Yell OUCH!! They did not start me out in phases. Started the stretching (passive after my doing the stretching) on the first visit, then on Monday I was given instructions to do them twice a day (therapy session counts as one). I am so anxious to get back into swimming (doc said not to right now) and biking (shoulders really hurt from the absorption of the bumps in the road) but I don't want to cause a tear. Started walking. Shoulder still hurt not matter what exercise but at least I'm moving.

I agree with Maureen. Your commitment and determination will enable you to progress as quickly as possible. Your organization skills and planning again will help you. Sorry you are having to go through so much pain, but I'm thinking there will come a time when you will be proud you've done it and live in a body that is much more functional and pain-free. Go, Cyndi!!

I Start Physical Therapy Tomorrow

Monday, March 18, 2013

I had my first post-operative doctor's appointment today. My stitches came out and I've been cleared to take a shower! Yeah! For right now, the only workouts I'm allowed to participate in are physical therapy related. (even fast walking with a sling on my arm, is out) I have my first physical therapy appointment tomorrow. I'm very nervous about it because I know in advance that it will be painful. For at least one week, I have to be driven to physical therapy because the therapy is so painful that I ave to be medicated. The medication is strong, which means no driving. Another reason I can't drive is that I can't lift my arm - right now the arm is just dead weight. I'm also not allowed to do any lifting - I couldn't any way because I would drop anything I would try to hold. The good news is that my previous workouts actually prepared my muscles for a faster recovery. The doctor said that total recovery time should take between 3 and 6 months instead of between 6 and 9 months if I follow my therapy plan to the letter. I plan to do just that.
