Stationary Bike Riding At Level 7-10

Tuesday, February 12, 2013

Yesterday and today I chose to use the stationary bike as my form of cardiovascular exercise. The new stationary bikes at the Y are amazing! The Y where I belong has upgraded all of their cardiovascular equipment. The recumbent cycle that I used yesterday and today had it's own television at the top of the cycle. The seat was comfortable (and adjustable) and the the screen tracking the exercise was large and easy to read. (Just the thing for these "over 50" eyes!) The ride was smooth too!

I did a 5 minute warm up (and cool down) in the 2-3 level and was easily able to progress to levels 7-10. Yesterday, I did intervals of 1-2 minutes at level 10 and the rest of the levels were at 7-8. Today, I did levels of 6-7 at a higher speed with intervals of one minute at level 8. Surprisingly enough, I got a better workout today and was able to do 10 minutes more total time. Yesterday, I did just under 10 miles in 65 minutes. Today, I did 12.5 miles in 75 minutes. On both days, I was dripping wet when I finished my workout. I was glad that I brought my water bottle with me!

I felt energized after both of my workouts. They were fairly short and pretty intense compared to my 2-3 hour workouts in the pool. The recumbent cycle had a very smooth ride and didn't seem to bother my shoulder. I left the gym with no more shoulder pain than I had when I arrived. Hooray!

Tomorrow I am scheduled to have the MRI of my left shoulder. I plan to stop at the gym on my way home and hop on the stationary bicycle for an hour or so. Finding a way to exercise has been a lifesaver for me since I use exercise as a stress outlet.

Matching Food Tracking With Successful Weight Loss

Sunday, February 10, 2013

emoticon

Today I decided to look back at the successful times along my journey. I matched my food tracker with my periods of successful weight loss and was able to see in writing what works for me. (Exercise has never been a big problem, except that I tend to do too much of it.) I love the fact that Spark People has such great online tools that I can use to help me along the way. Thank you Spark People!

So what information did I gain? When I eat protein with whole grains for breakfast, I do better during the whole day. Notice that I didn't say more calories. Every time I have had a weight loss streak, I have had egg whites, fruit and oatmeal for breakfast. When I eat a leafy green salad with lean protein for lunch along with fruit, a whole grain and skim milk, I am less likely to graze in the kitchen later in the day. If I'm really hungry, I eat a snack. I eat a fruit or veggie along with it and it is more satisfying. When I have lean protein, veggies, fruit and a whole grain for dinner, I stay full longer. Smoothies made with fruit or veggies and skim milk make a great evening snack that is very satisfying. I can use a variety of fat free dairy products and add fat to my plan with heart healthy oil. I feel the best when I drink 72 ounces of water and when I do it consistently, I'm less likely to confuse hunger and thirst.

Wow! That is a lot of information! I'm glad that I took the time to write it all down after looking at my tracker. I think that I'll copy this blog and use it as a tool when I do meal planning. This plan is full of vitamins, fiber and protein. It is low in sodium and low in added sugar.. If I throw in a few spices, I can have lots of variety too! It is a plan that keeps hunger under control but is flexible enough to allow me to live my life.

Thanks Spark People for having this wonderful site that helps me with my journey to health!

Thank you all for such wonderful support! I printed off a copy (in larger print) and have it sitting on the kitchen counter where I can see it. Now before I eat anything else, I look at the blog and can see in black and white what I ate when I was the most successful!

Perhaps Duct Tape Will Help My Exercise Program

Saturday, February 09, 2013

This past week has been a tough one for me. I've been sidelined from my usual workouts by huge amounts of shoulder pain. When I called the doctor and told his nurse that physical therapy seemed to make things worse, they weren't surprised and immediately scheduled an MRI of my left shoulder. I'm not sure why they didn't schedule the MRI from the beginning when my humorous MRI showed a possible problem and the radiologist who read that MRI suggested it. Ah, the joys of the health care system! When I had an evaluation (for the doctor) at physical therapy on Friday, my therapist put me on rest until the doctor tells me what the new diagnosis is for my shoulder (if there is one).

So what does a person who is used to working out 1.5 to 3 hours a day do without her usual exercise? Get creative and do as much walking as possible. The problem is that when you propel your body forward, your arms want to swing in order to maintain balance and speed. I've rigged up a cross body sling with my purse that enables me to prop up my arm so I can do some walking. The issue with any kind of sling is that it stresses my neck if I'm not careful. I was very careful today when I did it. The other thing I did was put my hand in the pocket of my shorts, when I walked later today. The pocket kept my arm from swinging and gave it a bit of support. I was surprised to find that it is difficult to walk with any amount of speed without swinging my arms. I was a strange sight with one hand in my pocket and the other arm pumping away. Several people stopped to watch me but no one said a word to me. LOL
I'm hoping that I can find a way to ride the recumbent cycle at the gym and support my arm in my lap. I'm afraid the motion of my legs might rock my upper body but I can experiment with it.

The topic at our Weight Watchers meeting this week was planning out our exercise in advance. I immediately went on a mental search and rescue mission to figure out how I can rescue my exercise program without hurting myself. I was so deep in thought that I missed about 5 minutes of the meeting. My physical therapist took all water exercise off my workout schedule. No wonder he smiled and laughed to himself when he suggested that I rest until after the MRI and follow up doctor's appointment. He knows that sitting still is very difficult for me when I'm used to being so active. He didn't have any suggestions for ways for me to workout because he didn't want to suggest anything without knowing the shoulder situation.

Perhaps I can come up with something in which duct tape is involved. The experts say it is one of the most valuable household tools. I'm getting a vision in which my left arm is taking on a silver tint........
we'll see!

I can just picture you with a duct taped wing! I know you hate being banished from the pool. Be sure to get the rest your shoulder needs. I guess that is probably too obvious to state, but I did anyway. Hope that MRI is very, very soon and that you get the information and treatment you need, along with an exercise program that will strengthen, not harm, you. Take care, Cyndi. Thanks again for the Red Lobster coupon. We sure enjoyed it!!

Oh my! I've heard that duct tape has been used for many, many things! But, for support of a limb? Uh, that would be a new one on me! LOL

I sympathize w/ya on this issue, cause I've been there & it's a very frustrating place to be! Do as much as you can, without causing further injury to that shoulder. It's remarkable how inventive we can be, when we want it badly enough! Expelling that energy becomes a priority! Good luck!

Polk County Team - Stepping Up To The Plate - Injured

Thursday, February 07, 2013

I am agreeing to head the Polk County Team just so that the team will have a leader. I hate to be a leader and know in advance that I won't be a good one because of an injury. However, I don't want anything to happen to the team since everyone else had things come up and couldn't lead any longer.
A big thank you to TBRANCH2 and AMANDAJCD for doing such a wonderful job!!! We appreciate your efforts.

Just so there aren't any misunderstandings, please be aware from the beginning that there will be days when I will not be able to be on Spark People due to my continuous problem with my left arm. I am still going through a painful time and it hasn't been determined yet if surgery will be involved in my treatment. I am currently waiting for approval for an MRI on my shoulder. Hopefully someone else will come along and feel the calling to lead.

I hope to see everyone at the team dinner tonight! Sorry that I didn't send out an email to everyone this month but I just this minute became the leader. There will be an email sent out about next month's dinner once it is determined by the members - when and where it will be held.

I've Been MIA This Week

Wednesday, February 06, 2013

I know that I've sort of disappeared this week and much of last week. I have been dealing with issues surrounding my shoulder. I go to physical therapy three times per week. Instead of getting a lot better, this week my shoulder seems to be getting worse. I've been plagued with lots of pain since last Friday and thus I don't spend too much time on the computer. Hopefully we'll figure out the cause and I'll get back into my normal routine.
