Early Thanksgiving Dinner

Sunday, November 11, 2012

Today we are going over to my SIL's house for Thanksgiving dinner. Since my FIL passed away last February, he lived right down the street from my SIL, she decided to go out of town this year for the actual Thanksgiving celebration. I think that is a wise move on her part. She will make an effort to establish some new traditions and make some new memories this year. She still wants to do something in our area so we will have Thanksgiving dinner today. It will be very strange having a big dinner without my FIL and hearing his loud laughter and all of his jokes. Still, we will have a sense of family and that is a good thing.

Hubby and I will cook a healthy Thanksgiving meal at our house on Thanksgiving with my family. We started a new tradition 2 years ago by adding a variety of vegetable dishes instead of breads, sweetened sides and unhealthy fats. The result was that everyone felt healthier and fuller at the end of the meal. We still indulge in cranberry jelly and pumpkin pie but in smaller amounts. This year I will make sugar free pumpkin pie for my hubby and sister and regular pumpkin custard in ramekins for my daughter and me. I will also save some pumpkin to make pumpkin smoothies for my daughter and me. They are soooo good!

Hubby and I were hoping to take a veggie tray to the dinner today, so we could be sure that we would be able to have things we can eat. My in-laws nixed that idea and told us to just bring ourselves. My plan is to eat very sparingly at dinner and eat my veggies when we get home. I will also take a snack with me to eat in the car so I won't be so hungry that all of the grease, bread and potatoes will tempt me. My guess is that since I think in terms of Weight Watchers points before I put something into my mouth, I will do just fine.

Fun At The Fall Festival

Saturday, November 10, 2012

This morning hubby and I went out for breakfast. I had 6 egg whites, a banana and 3/4 C of oatmeal with sugar free maple syrup. After we finished breakfast, we walked around our downtown area which was closed off to through traffic. There were antiques, crafts, antique cars, food and a D.J. Most of the restaurants and shops were also open, even at 9:30a.m. Did I mention that it was a perfect day for a festival? It was in the high 60's, very sunny with a blue sky. Sigh! The weather couldn't have been more beautiful for a long walk outdoors. Hubby and I started out together, looking at the antiques. I found some collectibles that we plan to give as Christmas gifts. As I was waiting to pay for 4 items, I started to talk to the owner of one of the shops. Hubby got impatient and I told him to go ahead and walk further up the street and wait for me on a bench. I finished looking at the antiques and couldn't find him anywhere, so I started looking at all of the wonderful handmade crafts.

There were many lovely handmade crafts available for purchase. I think I was just enjoying the day and my walk so I didn't buy anything else but I thoroughly enjoyed looking. I still didn't see hubby so I increased my pace and went up and down several side streets. I wasn't really worried about not seeing him and used my time to work in a little exercise. When I was finished I started checking all of the benches and finally I spotted him. He had a big o'l grin on his face and said, "Look'n for me? I bet you had a hard time because I was in there!" He pointed at a restaurant that some friends of ours own. Our friends had opened early (10:30a.m.) even though they serve Mexican food. (It is so yummy too!)

Hubby took me inside the restaurant to say hello. My friends wanted to see my purchases and I played them down and told them they were just a few little things, no big deal. Then I excused myself and went to the restroom. When I came back, hubby had all of my purchases spread out on the table - including the one thing that I had bought for him! It wouldn't have registered that one of the items was for him except that they commented about how cute it was. Of course hubby then wanted to take a closer look at it. It suddenly dawned on my friends that it was for my husband and one friend told him so. So much for surprises! She was so embarrassed and I just laughed. By Christmas, hubby will have forgotten. Ah, the joys of aging! My friends are really sweet and we enjoyed the visit but it was time to let them get to work, so we left.

We strolled around the craft booths once again and headed toward the antique cars. Talk about a walk down memory lane!!! Wow! There were cars from our collective parents' childhoods as well as our own. Let me insert here that cars from my childhood are now classified as antiques, but I am not! LOL There were at least 75 cars to look at and a D.J. was playing "oldies" music from the 60's, 70's and 80's. We had such a wonderful morning - exercise, fun, sunshine and music. You certainly can't beat that combination!

Friday - A Happy Dance Day!

Friday, November 09, 2012

I slept fairly well last night but at about 2a.m. I woke up with a headache. Bummer! The good news is that I got up, walked around, went back to bed, turned over to the other side and went back to sleep. I awoke again at about 4a.m. because my left thigh was throbbing. I don't know why either. I just turned over put a pillow between my knees and went back to sleep. That time, I didn't wake up until 7a.m. When I woke up I felt very stiff. This was most likely due to the fact that I increased the intensity and decreased the length of my workout yesterday. I also had some dry patches on my skin this morning so I decided to skip the water workouts until next week. Instead, today was a walking day.

So, what could I do for the day today? Wow! My schedule has been so tight for the last few weeks that having free time was a big treat! I decided to catch up on some things that I've been wanting to do all week. First, I went to my WW weigh in and I lost one pound. Insert a happy dance here! emoticon Next, I went to the Hallmark store in the mall and used $10 worth of coupons and got some freebies and bargains. I'm making progress on my Christmas shopping! Insert another happy dance here! emoticon After that I got gas at the gas station and only paid $3.29/gallon. Let's have another happy dance! emoticon Next I took a pre Thanksgiving trip to Walmart for groceries and Christmas gifts. Yes you heard me correctly, I am already doing my shopping for Christmas while also doing shopping for Thanksgiving dinner. Man was it crowded!!! I believe the snowbirds have landed in Florida for the winter! At Wally's World, as I like to call it, I was able to purchase all of the groceries on my list, 3 Christmas gifts, a great big turkey breast for $12 and I used around $12 worth of coupons. As an added plus, many of the things on my list were on sale because of Thanksgiving! I did a happy dance all the way out to my car! emoticon After loading my treasures into the back of my car, I started the drive home. I was afraid that because of the time, I would get caught in school traffic. Not so! I travelled the whole 15 miles without any problems and never got snagged in traffic. God was smiling on me as I put a smile on my face emoticon and a song in my heart emoticon emoticon Finally, I stopped at CVS to pick up a prescription. I had a very short wait and, drum roll please...... my prescription was ready as promised! Happy dance here emoticon

As luck would have it, hubby was home to unload my car for me, so I could quickly whisk away the Christmas gifts I had purchased and hide them, since all 3 were for him. While I was putting the gifts away, hubby unloaded the car. He also had a great day and was in a good mood which made me even happier. Together, we put the groceries away in record time! It was a happy dance day! emoticon emoticon emoticon

ActiveLink Is Helping!

Thursday, November 08, 2012

Last week, I made a decision to do shorter, more intense morning workouts. I also made an effort to stretch more at the end of my workouts. My plan was to decrease my morning workout and increase my activity during the rest of the day, so that the same workout time is spread out over the course of the day. The information that I got from my ActiveLink told me that when I work out for too long a time period in the morning, I become too tired to do activities in the afternoon.

The ActiveLink showed me that even though I worked out like a maniac for 2-3 hours in the morning, my daily cumulative calorie burn wasn't that much. I was resistant to the idea at first and felt very frustrated. I was stuck thinking that working out for 2-3 hours should be enough to lose weight even though I did very few other types of activity during my day. I decided to experiment with my workout lengths. My weight loss had already stalled so I had nothing to lose and everything to gain.

What happened, surprised me! Just cutting down my morning workout time and increasing it's intensity, gave me more energy later in the day. For example, after I left water exercise today, I
did some shopping, went to a doctor's appointment, came home, vacuumed the house and folded laundry. I'm still not experiencing the exhaustion that I often feel and it is almost 5p.m.!

Last week when I did this, I lost 2 pounds and I said goodbye to a two week plateau. No wonder my weight loss had stalled. I don't need to work harder, I need to work smarter. I can see now that I was resistant to change and it was stalling my own weight loss plan. Pacing myself has always been an issue because I've consistently been the type of person who works at 100% effort. By working at 75-80% percent instead, I could add additional activity later, after taking a break.

I read in a Spark article that you get the same benefit from three 20minutes workouts that you get from one 60 minute workout. Plus, my ActiveLink tells me that I get more overall calorie burn because my cumulative daily activity level increases. Now I've got a new plan for myself!

You are doing a great job analyzing the information you get from Active Link. Your strategies sound very solid. Spreading your activity throughout the day has got to help you. I'm so glad you are feeling energetic in the afternoons. I think that is a wonderful sign of increasing fitness!!

Yay! Isn't it cool when you learn something that really helps. The key is not giving up before you find something that works for you. Before SP I would just say, "It's no use." then give up before exploring mor options. You seem to have that problem solving ability already built in to your personallity. Good for you!

We are alike in that I push too hard and wind up (down) exhausted by 5:00. I found out by trail and error that shortening and intensifying myAM workout was more productive in so many ways. It pushed me off the plateau and gave me more energy. Double win.

ActiveLink sounds great. A great way towards working smarter.
