End the "Those who can't do-Teach" mentality

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

I am so tired of hearing "Those who can't do-Teach." That is so demeaning to the profession of teachers. It seems to make the assumption that teachers are lacking in the intelligence and ability to succeed in anything--because they they teach! We need to change our mind set big time.

I was very good in my job with my company but grew tired of the job. But my knowledge was valuable so I became an instructor. Those whom worked with me for years knew I could do the job I was teaching others to do- but the new students were under the "Those who can not do-teach" mentality which made teaching more difficult than it needed to be. Teaching is difficult enough without adding the "doubt" of in their abilities.

Even if you win awards in acting, have add awards in art if you are an artist, a famous mathematician, a plumber, a roofer, a salesman --once you begin to teach what you know suddenly your credibility is in question with that phrase. So I am asking everyone who reads this to end that phrase and add this one, "Those who have done it and done it well can and do become teachers! "

I think the whole work ethic has changed over the years. There are many bright, hard-working people, then there are some that look for an excuse to blame others when they lack initiative. I have never heard that expression either.

Some people don't want to learn and are afraid of failure. I was never an easy one to teach. When learning fractions, we were to draw a pie chart of quarters (fourths). My Dad was helping me with my homework and I couldn't get 25 divisions in my circle. To me a quarter was 25 cents and I thought in fractions, a quarter was 25 pieces, lol. My Dad would lose it and yell at me.

A teacher figures out the stumblingblocks and helps the student overcome them. I had some excellent teachers and one in college that should have been let go. Over half the class dropped out by mid-term and he said he didn't care, he got his pay check anyway. He may have been a genius, but he could not make those of us that weren't, understand what he was talking about.

The bumper sticker, If you can read this, thank a teacher, is what I feel about teachers.

I've never heard that expression. I have the highest respect for teachers and totally think they are under appreciated and under paid. I have three son's, who over the years have had some amazing teachers and some not so amazing teachers. I don't expect my kids teachers to be their parents and I consider this a team effort. I have always felt that people go into teaching because they love it. (It's like Police Officers). They certainly don't do it for the money or recognition. Hope you have a great day and know that you are WORTHY regardless of what insensitive comments are made by a few. HUGS!

Happy Easter!!

Saturday, April 23, 2011

Son requested homemade Lemon Meringue Pie for Easter, so I made one. I am also making homemade pumpernickel and homemade white bread to go with the ham and crab legs. I think I will make scalloped potatoes and asparagus with white sauce, deviled eggs and pickled beets as well. The "kids" are getting a small Easter Basket as well for each of them. I will make some colored hard boiled eggs which I can eat throughout the week.

Everyone Have a Happy Holiday Weekend!!

Other uses for coffee filters

Saturday, April 16, 2011

I am an avid tea drinker. I bought some loose tea recently but the tea was so finely grained it seeps through the tea ball. I pondered and remembered I had a large box of coffee filters for a coffee machine that was only used for my husband and company who drank coffee. I decided to try to use it in a larger tea sifter I had. VOILA! it worked! Not only that but I can rinse out the filter and reuse it with new tea!

I also read where you can use coffee filters for bouquet garni in stews, soups, etc.

So anything liquid you need filtering: oil, sauce, canning where you just want the liquid you could use the coffee filters. Cheap, effective and a ready solution!

They make good covers when heating small portions of food in the microwave. I read about putting one in the bottom of your pots before planting to keep the soil from leaking out of the drainage holes when you water your plants.

Liberals are logical and conservatives are Neanderthal?

"Based on what's known about the roles of these two areas of the brain, the structural differences are consistent with previous studies that found liberals are better able to cope with conflicting information and are more open to new experiences, while conservatives are better able to recognize a threat and more anxious when faced with uncertainty, according to team leader Ryota Kanai and colleagues." quote from the link

LOL, You know, we need both logic and fear to survive. So what is the purpose of the study? Also how many of the researchers were liberal or conservative?

" ... and, of course, many people change their political views during their lifetime, Kanai noted. ... He also warned against reading too much into these findings."

And then some of us (like me) are centrists/moderates, or go back and forth. That's not included in their ridiculously superficial analysis either.

LOL I think you and I went to the same engineering college or something. While my degrees weren't in engineering, I studied so much stats and experimental design that I drive everyone around me nuts with, "..but what if they did this?" or "...maybe it's just that..." or "How many subjects did they have? 10? Pfft." Fun stuff.

Time to stop the Negativity!

Thursday, April 07, 2011

I am so tired of the news. From the weather, wars, congress, and health and economy it seems to never end. I am an optimist and this is just driving me crazy! I need some relief! Maybe it is time for some family movie with popcorn just for fun!

You are like me. If I watch enough of it, it affects my attitude and gives me that, "What are we going do?" frame of mind.
