Girl's Retreat Week!

Monday, June 25, 2012

My mom just retired about a month ago and I am on summer break from teaching, so we have planned to spend this week at her lake cottage. I am sooo excited! I love spending time with my mom. She just reached her five year cancer free mark so I am extra excited about that! I came so close to losing her that this time is even more precious to me.

There isn't any internet at the cottage so I won't be able to post my exercise and visit my Spark buddies. On the plus side, however, she does have two kayaks so I am going to learn a new skill. I'm a little uneasy about it because you have to have your legs in the kayak (I have a bit of a claustrophobia issue emoticon) but she says I can put my legs on top is I really need to. Something about tipping over and getting stuck on the kayak.... emoticon!

I will be back Friday and will hopefully have pictures from my first 5K race back in May. My step dad took the pictures, so hopefully I will be able to get them from him this week.

Enjoy your week!

Slow walk

Sunday, June 24, 2012

Today the hubby said that he would like to walk with me. He wants to start being more active. I have been making sure that I exercise at least ten minutes a day, but really like to get in at least an hour five or more times per day. I was going to go for a long bike ride, but if the hubby wants to join me in getting healthy, I will skip the bike and walk.

We started our walk and he asked what the hurry was. I had to chuckle because I remember when I first started, I walked rather slowly. I guess my pace has increased! I slowed a little, but it drove me a bit crazy. I actually wanted to take off on a run! I resisted the urge and stayed with my man.

Our two mile walk took 32 minutes. That is okay with me, however. I got in my exercise and was able to walk with my hubby!

That's the best walk, with someone you love. Don't be surprise if he starts walking faster than then you will be running after him.

Another goal met!

Friday, June 22, 2012

I woke up this morning with the idea of running/walking around one of our area lakes. I used to walk around this lake when I did my training for the Susan G Komen 3 Day walk. I always told myself that some day I would run around this entire lake instead of walking. I knew the round trip was around five miles, so I planned on running a minimum of 3 miles. If I could go further I would, but eventually I wanted to be able to run the entire route.

There are many, many hills on this route. I had forgotten how many. They never really bothered me a whole lot when I was just walking. I started out and was feeling winded right off the bat. I reminded myself that it was the humidity and that it would soon pass. It passed and I got into my groove. The first mile passed and I was feeling pretty good. By mile three I figured I could keep on going for at least another mile.

Mile four passed and I worked through the thought of stopping. Next thing I knew, my Runtastic app was telling me that I had reached mile 5! WooHoo! I was not yet back to the beginning, but I knew I could make it to the end.

I made it back to where I had started in one hour and eight minutes...5.6 miles later! I had actually done it. My goal was to try to run the entire route by the end of July, but I actually did it today...on my first try!

My next goal is to run a 10K!

Perfect weather for running

Thursday, June 14, 2012

Today I woke with the intention of going for a run and then walking the remainder of my one hour workout time. The weather was perfect...not too hot and just cool enough to feel great while I ran. I told myself to do at least three miles of running and then see how I felt. As I was completing the first mile, I decided to go ahead and try to five miles. This is not something I have ever done, but I felt great! Mile four was just fine, so began mile five. Believe it or not, I really couldn't, I finished mile five with energy to spare. I would have continued just to see how far I could have gone, but it was 8:45 and church began at 9:00.

I was pretty excited that I was able to accomplish this goal. Had it been as hot as it was last week, it would not have happened. Maybe someday I will go for six miles!

Wow, good for you. I'm always excited when running is fun and "easy". As we know, there are days that are a chore so we need to celebrate those that seem effortless.

Need to make some changes

Monday, June 11, 2012

I went for a run this morning and boy was it hot! I ended up running two miles, then walked/ran another three miles. I think I am needing to bring water along with me on my run now since it is getting hot even in the early morning. Either that or I am going to just have to run in a loop and leave my water somewhere along that route. I was going to run around 7:00, but didn't get out until 8:00 a.m. I guess I am going to have to start earlier as well.

So water and earlier are the changes I need to make, or so I think. Does anybody else make changes like these when it starts getting hotter?

If it's hot I definately bring water. I have a water belt that carries 4 small bottles, I also have a belt that carries one big bottle. I tend to like the one with the 4 bottles, it doesn't move much and after awhile you don't even feel like you're wearing it.

I just bought some small ice packs and may try to carry one with me. I also have a "scarf" type thing that you soak in water and the polymer beads inside stay cool.

I do try to run earlier in the morning in the summer. I bring water and leave it along the route if I'm running more than 6 miles and it's over 70 degrees. I'm not one for lots of water while running but I don't want to risk getting dehydrated.
