Today I

* jogged for the first since I was a kid..

* had a Kona Ice (snow cone), but only ate about half and gave the rest to my husband.

* found out that a small size Kona Ice is on average 225-250 calories and uses real organic cane sugar, not any high fructose crap. Nice! I think I had about 100 cal on mine - and it was enough.

* picked more blackberries in the backyard.

* did a lot of errands..

No, didn't run while eating blackberry snow cone, but the timing was close.. It was a mix of orange, blue raspberry, strawberry, and lemon-lime flavors. But right after I had my half, I went for my second walk (didn't jog on that one) and immediately upon returning I picked the blackberries (it was nearly dark).

National Relaxation Day

Tuesday, August 16, 2011

So yesterday was officially National Relaxation Day. I ended up skipping my walking, giving myself a hot oil hair treatment, and taking a real bath, which I have not taken since my son was conceived.

This may have been my first bath in this house, though we've been here almost 7 years now. I think I thought I was too heavy for the tub when we moved here.. I was 300 lbs then. And then when I lost a lot of weight (60 lbs), I conceived Nicholas.. and don't think I wanted a bath when I was pregnant. I don't remember taking one, anyhow. Maybe I did. But, it's definitely been a long LONG time. I found out I fit pretty well in the tubl. I could lay down with my legs crossed and enjoyed the warm water surrounding me. I was sitting up when my son walked in on me and he wanted to climb in to play. I told him no, because it was time for me to get out and he'd already gotten a shower before mine. He also made me very cold when he opened the door and the tub's sliding door. But, I enjoyed it a lot and think I'll take baths more often.

My hair came out really great after the hot oil treatment! It was the daily sunscreen on my neck that was making my hair really disgusting - sticky and dried out no matter how much I washed and conditioned it. It was during the 3 minute wait before rinsing it, that I decided to just close the drain and sit down in the water.

About the walking - well, we had heavy rains today all day. I did not want to walk in that and I don't take my long haired (Maltese) dog walking in that either. I did walk in the drizzle yesterday and got pretty depressed. My legs have been hurting a lot lately so I decided a day off would probably be a good idea. Not as sore tonight anyhow.

Hopefully the weather will clear up and I can walk tomorrow.. Also want to pick more blackberries. I got terribly scratched up the other day all over my arms with the blackberry bushes. I tried to cut them back to d-etangle them - and ended up cutting off some of the fruiting branches. UGH! I replanted them and hope they will grown from the branches being planted. Not sure. Also moved the raspberry bushes from beside the compost bucket to the back beside the blackberry bushes.

So the only thing I want to do better in particular - is my nutrition. I got into the sweets a bit - chocolate in afternoon and ice cream at night. Also ate too much bread and too much butter. Will work on this. When I exercise, I eat better. That's a fact. The exercise and the nutrition feed into each other.

Did you celebrate National Relaxation Day?

With the steady rain yesterday, I didn't get outside to exercise, either. So, inadvertently, I celebrated National Relaxation Day...

Not Just Pointless Prickers

Saturday, August 13, 2011

Today is a yard work and play day. We are going to get the grass mowed, the weeds whacked, the hedge trimmed, remove the ink berry bushes, and trim back the prickers..

Oh!! Speaking of the prickers, I discovered yesterday that the huge pricker bush wall in the back of the house is actually a thriving blackberry patch. Wow! It's the first year we've seen berries on it, but I'd Ieft it there to protect my son from going over the edge of the back.. which drops pretty steeply. Some of the branches are protruding too far into the yard and we can't get to some of the ripe berries, so we are going to cut it a little bit. Excited to find we have a blackberry patch, though. How cool is that?! Not just pointless prickers. Hurray!!

We had blackberry bushes in the yard when I was a kid. I have such fond memories of scouring the bushes for berries with my sister; we loved the berries so much we'd pick some before they were ripe. I still remember that tart, tart taste... How fun for you!

Did Great UNTIL...

Friday, August 12, 2011

I was doing really well today with my nutrition and my walking - until dinnertime. Should have eaten with my little son before we went to pick up my husband.. Because he took a very long time (more than 45 mins.).. and then the smells of restaurants nearby were driving us mad.

We ended up getting Pad Thai for dinner from the Thai restaurant. I ate my whole portion and I have no idea what the nutrition is for that. I used one of the Pad Thai listings that came up and reported it as 1.5 servings. I have no idea, but that was over 1000 calories in itself and 51 grams fat. Yikes! (Maybe it was just 1 serving.. but when we called they could not give us any info including portion size.) I can tell you I haven't felt that overly full, stuffed, uncomfortable in a long long time. I used to eat that amount no problem and without pain like this. Then right after dinner I took another long walk and that was the hardest walk with no energy left (it wanted to all do digestion) and feeling more and more full as I walked. I don't want to do that again any time soon! So guess I learned a lesson about portion size. If I'd had half a serving and a side or two of vegetables that would have been a better choice.

What's worse? My son was too tired to eat (7:15) and wouldn't even take a real bite of the Pad Thai. I told him just one bite and if he didn't like it, I'd get his spaghettios.. but he wouldn't cooperate and then said he wasn't hungry at all. I think he was just too tired then. After a lot of fussing - AND peeing on the carpet in my bedroom, he did go right to sleep. He's gonna wake up HUNGRY like a bear, though!

I try to remember with kids... it is our job to provide a healthy meal and their job to choose whether to eat it. So try not to get into a power struggle about food...it is not worth it.

Oh, I did the same thing one time! Met a friend for dinner, went to a vegan place that's super yummy, and picked what I thought would be a good dinner -- a noodle soup with lots of veggies and tofu, and then we shared some pad thai. When I got home and started guesstimating the calories -- hoo nellie!

But it's just one meal, so once the sodium washed out of my system, it was all good.

Not Sure

Friday, August 12, 2011

I'm not entirely sure how I'm doing because I haven't been tracking my food very well. I can tell you that I think I ate well, but maybe not enough today. I felt completely awful all day - with a sinus headache, congestion in my chest, dizziness, and very low energy. I wrenched my back this morning while putting away dishes from the dishwasher. I couldn't lift anything for hours. This is also my heavy flow day of my cycle which always saps me. I did take all my vitamins and an iron supplement today.

I did walk three times today - totaling about 2 miles. I had over 5000 steps today and the day before, close to 5000 on Tuesday and almost 6000 on Monday. I was proud of myself for getting that in today because I felt so poorly.. and yesterday and the day before are pretty amazing given the rainy weather and t-storms we went through.

My brother's birthday would have been today (Aug. 11, that is.. I see it just passed midnight tho and it's now the 12th.. Guess this blog won't count til the 12th for spark points). He passed away two years ago. I still really miss him and this is kind of bumming me out.
