My second 10k

This is my second time in the Cooper River Bridge Run and I shaved 5 minutes off my time from last year. I know that may not be a big deal to some but I haven't really trained for this one like I did for last year. I also ran more this year, was better at it and felt I did better even with the stomach cramp, the arch that felt like it cramped which turned into very bad knee pain (still today).

I slowed down my running and breathing was easier so cutting down 5 minutes is great to me. 10k in 77 minutes! Next year I will be able to add some running up that 1.5 mile 4% bridge incline.

Next up, 5k the end of April!

    That's a big improvement over that distance -- almost a minute per mile faster.

    I really wish I could run. It looks like real fun to those who do. I have a granddaughter who runs 6 miles every day. Whew, it makes me tired to even think about it.

And happened

I ran! I've been saying I can't get my breathing right (true) while running and the most I've been able to do was not much. About 15 min, sometimes .6 mile. Then last week I ran 2 entire miles without walking!! I know that is not a big deal to some as some run 5, 10, even more miles at a time. But for me, this was HUGE!!

Then today, it happened again.

I ran 5k. Without stopping!! What?!? Oh yeah!! My goal was to match my 2 miles that I was able to do last week. When I hit 2 miles I decided to just keep going until I couldn't go anymore. So, I upped the incline on the treadmill thinking it wouldn't be long before I had to stop. And I continued on for 2, 2.5, 3 miles!! I even upped the incline a little more. I did stop after the 3.1 because I needed to shower for work.

This has felt so good being able to do it finally!

I think I will do it again!

    Way to go, I want to turn mywalk to a jog, but I ended up with a mild injury that will delay it a little bit. That's wonderful though.

Answers to my back pain

I've had back pain for years. I would get an adjustment and I would feel better maybe for a day or two then back to hurting. I have now found out I have Deteriorating Disc Disease in my thoracic area, bone spurs and my C2 is rotated to the right and that is causing pressure on my spinal cord.


So I'm trying to determine what, if anything, I am doing that makes it hurt more. I've been sort of slack on my walking and trying to run. I walk/ran 3.5 miles today and it didn't bother me. Good sign.

I think I may have to drop down the lbs of the free weights or at least be mindful of each exercise and use a lower weight on some. I need to look at this more when I'm doing strength exercises.

Yes, It has caused me to be a little down and now I will have to get a MRI. I'm going to continue working out because I just can't quit nor will I. If I have to make adjustments for a while then I will.

    Not fun stuff to face, and understandably takes some time to adjust to the new reality. Love your attitude, though. No doubt exercise will help you tremendously but as you're doing finding the right ones to support and not aggravate are the adventure of it. Best to you in this piece of your journey.

Thoughts from today's 5k

My 2nd 5k today and sadly, I did not beat my PR.

Time today: 36.08; that is walk/run.
My PR from 2 months ago was 35.30. Not a huge difference but still wasn't an improvement. I still cannot get my breathing down but I keep trying.

So, here are the random thoughts during that 5k.

1. I should take pictures of all the road kill (turtle, squirrel, bird).

2. OMG it's hot and humid!

3. I like the sound of throwing the cup on the road.

4. How much further???

5. WATER!!

6. I think I'm dying

7. When is the next 5k?

8. I see the finish line!!!

I know the road kill thing was ewww..... but that was the thought at the time. I don't know why, maybe it was the heat & humidity getting to me!

Have to keep getting better!

Thinking of adding something new to my workouts

I've been working out for 1.5 years now and I have found that I love it. Yes, there are days that I don't feel it and I may not work out. Then I feel like s**t the rest of the day for NOT working out.

Now I want some change in my exercise; you know, do something different. I do cardio, weights, etc. I even run a little. And I mean a little. I just can't seem to get my breathing right no matter what I try and the fitness articles I read about it. But, I keep trying and working on it.


Now I am looking for a bike for some change. When did they come out with so many bikes?? Growing up there was the bike kids have that had no speeds. Then you got a 3 speed or a 10 speed. The last bike I had was 22 years ago and it was a 12 speed mountain bike that my parents bought me. Their choice was simply so I wouldn't be leaning over on a 10 speed so my back wouldn't hurt (lifetime of back problems for me). I only rode that on streets.

I have decided (I think) on a Hybrid, although I believe a road bike will be better suited to my needs. Why are you thinking of a hybrid then, you ask? Because road bikes start out at $700 and a hybrid around $250 (on sale currently).

Why the hell are they so expensive??

My plan is to really ride this bike and there are some rides coming up in a few months. Century and half century rides.

I think it will be fun to do this.

I think I can do this.

I think I need to stop looking and get off my ass and buy one. Although my bf said he was going to buy me one for our anniversary. Which was 3 weeks ago. Which I still do not have. So hopefully I can buy it next week when I go to the "big city" as I don't have a bicycle shop in my town and everyone has advised me not to buy from chain stores and to buy from a bike shop as it will be better.

So wish me luck! Anyone want to go?

    Good luck! Wish I were closer, I LOVE bike shopping! I have a road bike and a hybrid. Looooove the hybrid, didn't switch up the road bike until I was into 30+ mile rides. Road bikes are less resistance with the thinner tires, but the trade off is feeling every bump in the roads that aren't totally smooth. Definitely stay with bike shops and their expertise in fitting/tuning/advice for riding style, etc. $$ is in the components, best advice I ever got was find a frame that fits best, components can always be upgraded as/if riding becomes more technical and you want performance boosts.
