Woo hoo!

Wednesday, March 28, 2012

I finally started walking on my bum leg, slowly with a little bit of weight bearing exercise. So this means I will be off the crutches soon. And I got to go on the exercise bike for 10 minutes today at the physical therapist office. The pain in my leg is almost gone to the point where I don't need the heavy pain killers anymore. I finally feel like I'm making progress and recovering. Thank you all for your support during this tough time. SP has really helped me to stay on track.

So glad you are on the road to recovery! You are doing it right by taking it slowly, but persistently.

First day back to work

Monday, March 26, 2012

I'm exhausted! Well it was back to work for me today. My leg is feeling much better. I won't need the pain meds at all soon. The only thing that really stunk today was taking getting to work on crutches. My commute is basically 3 blocks to the subway, into manhattan, 1 change of trains and then a 3 block walk to my office. What normally takes me about 35 minutes took an hour and 10 minutes today! It is definitely slow going on the crutches. Plus the only elevator is when I change trains half way through. So lots of stairs. Our office building connects to the subway tunnels in the basement. Thankfully the security guards let me take the freight elevator to avoid the escalator, although they gave me a hard time about it at first. I pulled the sympathy card and then they caved. People gave up their seats to let me sit on the train, so there are lots of good people out there. Got to the office and was completely soaked as if I went for a 5 mile run. Burned lots of calories today. Wished I could have showered several times today. Yuk! Everyone was happy to see me although a little shocked to see me on crutches. They are a conversation piece for sure. Caught up with all my emails. Ran out of steam by 3pm, but toughed it out until 4:30 when I went home early. Not a very productive day but not bad for my first day back. One of my bosses offered to let me take a car service home until I get off the crutches - think I will definitely take him up on that! today I decided to tough it out, I feel funny taking a car home but tomorrow I think I will.

I would definitely take the boss up on his offer. It sounds like a job to get to the job. Are you still doing PT? I am glad that your knee is feeling better.

So it's been 12 days since my ACL surgery and today I'm venturing out into Manhattan for the first time since. I am feeling better everyday and I feel pretty strong with a moderate, bearable level of pain, so I think I'll be ok. If I get too tired we will come home early. In a way this is a practice run for when I return to work on Monday. I will need to take the subways, so now I get to take the subway with crutches and less people on it to see how it goes. We're only going out for a few hours. Wish me luck!

So today is my last day home from work. I don't really want to go back, but i have to. I did my exercises today. I'm way under my calories for today and trying to figure out what to eat. Any good snack ideas?

Thank you so much for asking about that! So far I'm ok today. My surgical wounds are almost completely healed.

Snacks--fruit--I like crackers and Laughing Cow cheese. Greek yogurt or just yogurt.

I went to the ortho Dr. today to get my supartz shots. OUCH! I asked him about ACL surgery. He did tell me that it can be worse than a knee replacement and takes weeks of recovery, sometimes as many as 10. He did tell me why but it was Greek to me. I asked him what to do about pain medication explaining that I don't like taking Tylox or Oxycontin because I have a very addictive personality and I am afraid of becoming addicted. He said after 10 days you can ask your Dr. for ibuprophen 800. It is stronger than Aleve or Advil but doesn't have narcotics in it. It doesn't give you a sleepy, zombie like feeling. I hope this helps.
