If I had to choose

Sunday, February 12, 2012

Between skiing and running I would choose skiing over running any day. But running had really increased my endurance and skiing ability by a factor of 10 it seems. But now I'm going to have to find something else to get passionate about for a little while it seems. I just don't get as much of a thrill from the machines at the gym as getting fresh air and being outside. I hope I can maintain my focus and drive until I can get my running legs back on.

I would prefer cross-country skiing over running. Weather hasn't been cooperating this year for either, so it's a cardio machine of some kind when I go to the gym. I alternate the treadmill, elliptical, and stationary bike lately, just for variety and avoid boredom. Good luck on your journey, too. I do miss the fresh air, scenery, and the sunshine, though. Better days are coming. Every day is a good day anyway!

Feeling better

Saturday, February 11, 2012

So it's been almost a week since I injured my ACL ligament, and like clockwork I am feling much better. I can finally walk without crutches. I went to the pharmacy to get a different knee brace to get around everyday with. I'm not sure what to do about taking the subways to work. I don't really need the crutches but I will need to sit if my leg is feeling uncomfortable. It's not really obvious I'm injured unless I bring the crutches. I don't like to ask people to give up their seats, so I'm not really sure what to do. I figure if I leave earlier in the morning I will probably get a seat anyway.

I ride the subway, too -- when I had a soft cast on my leg, no one would offer me a seat, and it was not comfortable! I finally just started asking. Really, most people probably just don't notice. Take care of yourself!

ACL surgery

Wednesday, February 08, 2012

I'm definitely going to need ACL reconstructive surgery. I've been hearing/reading it can take anywhere from 3 months to a year to recover. Anybody here have this done? What were your experiences?

I'm sorry you have to have surgery! My daughter had a friend who had the surgery just before high school graduation and had to come in a wheelchair to keep her leg elevated. I'm not sure how long the recovery is, but I know there is a lot of physical therapy after. You are active and healthy, so will hopefully heal quickly.

Thanks. I'm not sure when I'm going to have it done yet. Have to meet with the doc next week.

ACL injury

Monday, February 06, 2012

This sucks! 2 days into my 1 week ski vacation I injured myself badly. I was coming around a turn taking short stop and my left ski turned the wrong direction and twisted my knee. I heard and felt a little pop, excruciating pain for about 30 seconds and that was that. Ski season and marathon training is now over for me for at least 2 months. The ski patrol took me down to the emergency clinic and the doctor says I have torn my ACL and it's the most common ski injury. I will probably need surgery given my active lifstyle. It can happen to anyone at anytime no matter how careful you are. So now I'm sitting in the hotel entertaining myself with tv and SP.
For my German friends here, ACL tear = Kreuzbandriss

Oooh, I am so sorry to hear about the ACL injury. I've been told that it is one of the longest injuries to rehab from. Being fit will probably make recovery better, hopefully.

Airport

Thursday, February 02, 2012

I hate airports and I hate traveling. Everything is a major inconvenience all for the sake of a false sense of security. I like being safe as much as the next person but some of the safety measures are complete overkill. Like water bottles for example, I think it's obvious if I bring an unopened bottle of water it's just water. Last year I had to throw out a lotion because it was .5 oz over the stupid limit. I wish they would just use some common sense!

I totally agree with you! And I think if someone wants to blow out the bomb in the airplane, he will do it anyway.
