Yesterday at work two of my co-workers were discussing how to motivate their little ones to learn their spelling words and encourage them to read. One of the moms said something that chilled me to the bones...
She offered to take her son to Chucky Cheese and let him have whatever he wants and play all the games he wants, if he learned all his words each week. He countered with McDonald's and said (with relief) yes! She said she'd do anything to get her son to do his homework.
I was appalled (and on the phone waiting for a physician). I wanted to say something so badly, tell her there are so many better ways to encourage children other than with fast food. Aside from being a wuss(which I am), I didn't know how to address what she was doing without sounding like I was calling her a bad mom. She is fairly young and seeing how I was never blessed with kids, she would have resented me butting in.
While I'm venting, I am also appalled at fast food commercials! Some of the new burgers/sandwiches that fast food companies are coming up with almost makes me nauseated just looking at them on TV. Death by fast food...I'm not saying I don't eat fast food on occasion, I do; but these horribly unhealthy, highly advertised concoctions will never pass my lips. *shudders*
Okay, off my soap box now...back to our fabulously spectacular Saturday!
