My funny Weaver.

Weaver loves to dig for critters. Sometimes he gets half his body in the holes he digs. I have so much fun watching him.

Maybe you should do one of those new DoggyDNA tests on him to see if he has Terrier in his gene pool emoticon

I think you know already my feelings for your wonderful courageous boy Gretchen.
I love watching Weaver's antics and how much he is enjoying doing that.

Thank you so very much for sharing this with us. I love that boy of yours although we have never met. His wonderful, gentle, fighting for love and life spirit embraced me from the moment I saw a photo of him.

I am so very touched that you found each other. What a blessing indeed.

What a treat! Thanks, Gretchen and Weaver!! He is a very popular dog with so many of us!!

I think he's smelling something pretty delicious and also stopping to listen from time to time -- a bit like potato chips calling his name from the cupboard, maybe!

Healthy Comfort Food Suggestions?

Saturday, January 16, 2010

Morning everyone,

My YMCA is having their monthly potluck on Wednesday and we are suppose to bring a healthy comfort food. Any suggestions out their? It is at 11:00 right after our water aerobics class so this will be my lunch.

Have a nice day.

There is a great Spark Recipe called Salsa Chicken. You make it in the crock pot and it is so simple and delicious! I took it to a group at Christmas time and it was a hit!! I like to add a can of black beans for more protein boost and if you want it more or less spicy you can adjust the amount of taco seasoning in it or add a can of green chilis. It's wonderful with rice and baked Tostito scoops.

I also cut my chicken breasts in smaller pieces so it is already bite sized when you dip it out.

Let us know what you decide to make! There are some great suggestions on here already!

    Great suggestions here.

I find veg curry or bean chillis quite comforting. Chicken casserole is another goodie.

Enjoy!

By its very definition, comfort food, that probably means fattening. So why not surprise them all and take a bottle of Southern Comfort? emoticon

You've got some great suggestions here -- and I'm definitely a homemade veg soup person big time myself -- (brag about myself as the "soup meister" pretty insufferably, actually!!) but you know what? mac and cheese is comfort food and can be pretty healthy reduced fat/higher fibre with added-calcium skim milk, low fat cheese, a bit of mustard powder for extra kick and maybe some red pepper flakes, whole grain pasta, and a whack of additional veggies for colour and nutrition: carrots, peas, celery ?? crunchy topping of crushed whole wheat crackers and more ooey-gooey cheese: whaddya think??

(these pot lucks are pretty competitive affairs and they don't necessarily really MEAN totally healthy!!)

Veggie soup is my favorite healthy comfort food. It must be homemade with moderate sodium. I use all low calorie veggies (onion, celery, carrots, tomatoes, green beans, sometimes spinach, cabbage, garlic) except I add some beans. In a big pot I add 2 or 3 kinds like garbanzos and pintos and red beans. My husband loves potatoes, but I can take them or leave them, so if I add them, I just take them out of my bowl and put them in his! Sometimes we add corn and peas, but it does make the calories a bit more.

Put the phrase "low cal vegetable recipes" into the Spark search engine (or Google). You'll find a lot of interesting stuff.

I make a very healthy beef stew which my family loves. However, it takes two days prep because the meat is cooked first to defat. Chicken pot pie is also good and I have a very healthy version of that, too. I also agree that the soup or chili would be good choices. A nice fruit or veggie salad also good.

Veggie tray, angel food cake with berries on top, or turkey meat balls. emoticon

How about a big batch of Chili? I've been making lots of Turkey chili (with all the left over Turkey from the holidays), but this weekend I'm making beef (mixed with ground chicken) chili.

Another suggestion is ham and beans - find a low fat recipe for the corn bread emoticon

You can make any of these this weekend, and it will be even taster on Wednesday.

Good luck!

Aqua Globe Question

Friday, January 15, 2010

Have any of my Spark friends or other Spark People used the Aqua Globe to water their house plants? Before I invest in the globes I wanted to get some feed back as to how well they work/or not work.

Thanks,
Gretchen

I have them and I like them. The only thing is you have to make a hole in the dirt with something as pushing them in clogs the hole the water comes out of.

I've never used them, but often thought about it. I guess you're going to have to be the one to break new ground, Gretchen. Then you can tell US how good they work. Invest in just one and give it a try? Karen

Hula Hoop/Sports Hoop Information

Saturday, January 09, 2010

The information below came from: http:/www.sports-hoop.com/

I clicked on "Sports Hoop Club" on the left hand side and on the next page I clicked on "Reports from Media".

There is lots of information on the Sports Hoop on this website.

9/1/2006
Discover how to Hula-Hoop for better health FOX LAKE JOURNAL

Tired of shying away from working out because of the fight it takes to get a machine at the gym? If so, a different kind of workout - one that is fun and invigorating, tones the body, and offers a cardiovascular boost and endorphin rush - may be the perfect solution.
This time of year, a lot of people get that kind of workout by hopping on water skis, or rowing down the river, but for this workout, leaving home is not necessary - unless it is desired by the individual.

There is a new phenomenon sweeping the country. Grown men and women are picking up Hula-Hoops, similar to those they played with back in grade school, and using them as an integral part of their workout routines.

According to the Cooper Institute, a health-based, non-profit research and education center, these individuals are on to something. One minute of Hula-Hooping burns as many calories as running an eight-minute mile, or a high impact aerobic class. The activity also promotes correct body alignment from the circular motions and proper posture in the upper body.

Fitness experts are quick to point out that people can get even more health benefits by stepping things up a notch and using a weighted hoop like those offered by California's Sports Hoop Inc. Three models are available.

The Acu Hoop and Trim Hoop models can be used to strengthen the user's abdomen and lower back, while at the same time improving blood circulation to those areas. Both are ideal for those interested in health, fitness and fun, and they are available with three, four, or five pound weights.

The primary difference between the two is that the Acu Hoop is a wavy shape design, comes in detachable pieces and is made with high tech plastics. The Trim Hoop is a plain circle with steel pipe inside and is not available in detachable pieces.

Sports Hoop also makes a hoop designed to enhance intense adult and teenage fitness.

My family wanted to see me do the hoop and my cousin took this picture:

Fabulous Lady!

Monday, January 04, 2010

I would like to apologize about forwarding the message on to my Spark Friends through this website. It was sent to me so I passed it on to my fabulous friends here at Spark. I was not aware this type of chain should not be passed on. I found out through reading messages that this type of post bogs down the system and there was a request by Sparkpeople Coaches last year to not forward any of these emails through sparkmail or post on member's sparkpages.

I was quite upset when i received two of these messages from 2 sparkfriends especially when it said if you fail to foward this message you will have 10 years of ugliness,i am a little bit supersticious but even so i would not forward this to anyone else and i have deleted the messages from my page.
I know a lot of peole passed on this message although some did not have the bit about having 10 years of ugliness if they failed to forward it to 10 people.
