Starting with Small Steps

Wednesday, December 30, 2009

I have been with Spark for two months. I lost five pounds rapidly, then ten, then gained some back. I am happy with my progress. This is why:

I now workout 4-5 times a week at my local Y. I was a stranger to the place before SP and find I enjoy it. Over the holidays, each of my four kids and DH joined my exercise at on time or another. DH has also started walking a three mile route on his own.

I track everything—the good, the bad and the ugly. I see my “uglies” clearly and have learned from them. I have a nutritious foundation and, lucky me, love healthy foods. I sabotage myself, though, with mindless eating that I do not enjoy. Occasionally, I binge—which I do enjoy. I am learning to curtail this monster with portion control. My goal is to allow a once or twice a week indulgence (ice cream) within my daily calorie range. I know that if I plan calories for ice cream, it makes mindless eating totally not worth it—I would much rather have my controlled portion of Breyers light mint chocolate chip ice cream!

I got my Spark book and am halfway through it already!

How great that you're able to see your "uglies" clearly and learn from them. It's all too common for folks to be so shamed by them that they just quit. Your approach is so much healthier! Yay, you!

Yeah, WTG...thank you for your comments on my blog!! I am so excited. I joined SP back a year ago, in October, did take a while to get going, then started a team, did very well for several months...I had dropped 40 pounds...then I enrolled in classes at the college...down hill from that point!!

I am going to stick to it this time around!! I want to be done with it, once and for all!! Of course I realize the maintenance goes on for ever...LOL...that I can live with...it is this FAT body that I can not live with!!

I live alone, so I count on my support from SP. a lot. PLUS, I want to be a good example for my team members! Hang in there and keep in touch!! WE CAN DO THIS for OURSELVES and the ones we love!!

On Shining the Sink

Monday, December 21, 2009

I am not a member of the flylady sparkpeople but got curious about what flylady was all about. I looked at the message boards and the flylady site. Flylady, in case you don’t know, is a motivational website that helps with organization and control in the home. Since Spark People, I’m all about getting better control so I did the very first thing fly lady said to do : I shined the sink.

This simple act is a miracle! It changed the behavior of every member in my household. The kitchen is the heart of our home. The kids and DH see the very clean sink and they become very neat themselves! The same goes for me. Because my sink is spotless, I clean to match the shininess of the sink! It is like Malcolm Gladwells Tipping Point for the home!

Wish I would have thought of this a long time ago!

I stopped flylday a year ago. Too many emails. Plus, she apparently shares her email list with others so you get a lot of crap in your email box. She repeats the same stuff over and over--good stuff, but unnecessary repetition.
I did go to here original source--Peggy and sister from Salmon Creek in Vancouver Washington. They wrote a book years ago and did their system using file cards. I remember them and actually had some old cards I made years ago that I had run across.
Anyhow, flylady is a good site. But I only needed it for awhile.

The best thing I learned from Flylady is to take baby steps. Cut things into 15-minute increments, set a timer, work for 15 minutes, then quit and do something else. You can do anything for 15 minutes.

Favorite Flylady line: Your house didn't get dirty in a day. It's not going to get clean in a day.

I apply that to weight loss, too. I didn't gain all this weight in a week; I'm not going to lose it in a week.

I'm afraid I may be too far gone for flylady! I am a walking disaster as far as organization goes! This was okay while my memory was like an elephants; alas, that is gone and I am lost!

This is very interesting. I have always had a "thing" about a shiny sink. When I was working and had a cleaner at home, I always insisted that the last thing done before he left was the sink so when I got home I would see the beautiful shiny sink!

A New Relationship With Food

Monday, December 14, 2009

Today I am baking in preparation for a full house as my children return home. Recipes are from Spark people and are new to me.

I am learning to look at food, especially calories, as currency. I have 1400 to spend each day. I’m making good choices. I prefer nutritious food because it satisfies me, staves off cravings, and looks great in my tracker! I wash the batter from bowls and utensils immediately. I am individually quick freezing goodies and then sealing, wrapping, labeling--and I am done.

I have a lot of traditional baking that will require vigilance on my part. There are tempting family favorites that will be calling out to me. I am kinda glad I am starting Spark People right at the holidays because it tests me on new skills. And that is all this is—new skills, new relationship, new way of looking at things….

Thanks for giving me the words to express how I've been thinking. "Calories as currency." Great!

Great attitude. I really like the idea of calories as currency. Some foods are definitely not worth it. Awareness is half the battle.

Blog Cruising

Saturday, December 12, 2009

I’ve been exploring the blogs for motivation/advise and came across my favorite blog of the day from WarmSpringDay’s blog of Dec 12. Click link below.

She links to flylady.com – a place to go to help you catch up on nasty housework! I had never heard of it. There are a couple of groups on SP for fans of the site.
