SparkAmerica Motivates Me!!

Wednesday, September 08, 2010

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
Iím exercising like crazy and LOVE it!!! I put on over 100 pounds over twenty years while raising my kids. Hooray for me that Iíve become an exercise nut!

I live close to a Y and go more than once a day. I knowóit sounds nuts. But Iím in the right frame of mind. I have LIMITED TIME. When I go, Iím efficient. Generally, I boot myself out if Iím over 90 minutes. And because Iím so close, if I want to run back after supper, I do it. This week, DH is on the night shift so Iím doing more evening exercises. I love to close the joint down --- itís so peaceful. I will be there a lot during football season because I donít watch tv anymore. Got better things to do!!

I also exercise during the day. These donít count toward anything. My ďmindlessĒ exercise includes squats, lunges. Quickfire team suggestions, and sometimes new exercises I learn from classes or the internet.

My appetite is changed. I prefer healthy foods over unhealthy ones. When did this happen?!!! I donít know exactlyóbut Iím glad I changed!

Anyhow, Iím thrilled to see myself lead in SparkAmerica exercise minutes. I count my blessings everyday that I am getting healthier, stronger and more fit! It is slow progress but it is finally happening!!

Iím pushing 110# on the glut machine today (up from 90#). Iím doing repetitive squats at home like theyíre nothing. I decreased my assist on the assisted pull up and assisted dip machine from 116# to 105# today. I am amazed at the strength in my body.

Farmerís Market and Eating Beets

Sunday, August 29, 2010

emoticon I discovered beets!! I never thought to cook the greens and stems since my only experience with beets was the red root. But beets are a cool vegetable. I stir fried chopped beet greens along with garlic and onions and served them for supper yesterday. I boiled the beet roots and threw balsamic vinegar, salt & pepper on them overnight. I like that you can use the WHOLE vegetable. Why bother planting corn when you figure the bulk of the corn plant is inedible-- that even the harvested corn is mostly cob & silk & husks. We are growing beets in next yearís garden (along with TOMATOES).

emoticon DH and I have been eating the tomatoes whole over the sink. This is REAL FOOD. I bought so many at the farmerís marketówe just grab them and eat like they are apples. Yum.

Just bought three different types of heirloom tomatoes. SO delicious... You can definitely eat them raw as they are.

I haven't done much with beets--that's something else to look into! Thanks for reminding me :)

I threw some of the beets in pickle juice after I finished the pickles in the jar. Now, I just have beets that taste like pickles! The pickled beets and non-pickled beets tasted good overtop sauted spinach greens. None of the dishes was spectacular alone, but the combination of flavors was excellent.

I am enjoying eating healthy. We gardened when I was a kid. My neighbor lady back then was the best gardener and she did different things than my mom. She collected tender dandelion greens in the spring and wild mushrooms. I think of her a lot lately since I am now tending to cook like her. It is very basic--- very whole food oriented.

I have to admire you. I don't like beets very much no matter how they are served. But I did have the same discovery this week with figs. I'm in love I think. I can't get enough of them. :)

Core Muscles I Didnít Know I Had

Core Muscles I Didnít Know I Had

emoticon I used to think abs when I thought core. Not anymore. My core is SORE! And I CONTROL my core muscles. I can contort my thorax and abdomen like a worm in front of the mirror.

I started ďreverse flyísĒ with 3 pound weights laying on a 45 degree incline. Iím now doing 5#. At first, I could not believe that I could only do 3 pounds with this exerciseóbut these are ignored muscles. As Iíve strengthened, I notice those back muscles in other exercises and activities I do. Itís like they are waking up.

I do low rows at 45# with a cable machine. I keep good posture and lean slightly forward then slightly back with each row, SQUEEZING those shoulder blades together. When I run now, I engage that core that has been getting stronger. I am more upright, my chest is open, I breathe deep into the abdomen AND I FEEL FREE!! It has brought new joy to my cardio workout.

I had no idea that this is what core exercise would do for me.
