The great Spring Break Adventure!

For the first time ever, I decided to take my kids on a little trip, without my husband. He is working in Spain. I just didn't feel like moping around the house wondering how to entertain my kids during an incredibly long week!

We decided that we would camp at Goose Island State Park - $10/night.
We went to the beach (only 6.5 miles away) every day.
We went into the Rockport Aquarium - free. They even let me bring our dogs inside.
We went to the Rockport Art Gallery - free. It turns out that even my 7 yr. old loved it. I even found an original watercolor painting ($15) and a seaside photo print ($60) for my house.
We checked out Fulton Mansion - free.
We chose not to cook our meal since I hate cleaning up after cooking at a campsite. We made sandwiches for lunch, cereal and fruit for breakfast. We ate out dinner.

It is a 2 hour and 50 minute drive from our house to the park. I was a little daunted at doing this on my own, but, I got through it and had so much fun with my children. I came back unstressed and slightly tired (but not exhausted!).

I found out that I sleep better on a Walmart cot that comes with a cushion. I found an inexpensive dress that feels like I am wearing nothing! I even managed to make my husband feel jealous that he couldn't be there with us.

I told him that when we get a long weekend, we could go back with him and enjoy the town again.

The weather was a wonderful 77 degrees in the day and 64 degrees at night. No air conditioner or heater needed. I could just live at the beach. One day after putting 4 kids through college, that dream may finally be realized. I have at least 14 years to get there though.

Well, there are only46 days to the BPMS 150! I am going to do a 26 mile ride on Friday to see where I am as far as endurance goes. This will be interesting. My goal is to be in good enough shape that I don't feel like a train wreck. That may be an unattainable goal. This is my first time and I have never done such a long distance.

  


Lice again! But turned into a spa day.

I found out that we had the lice monster again! More laundry than I ever wanted for the next two weeks. I decided to make this fun by turning it into a spa day. Baby Oil is a natural remedy for head lice. We used nice smelling baby oil gels and rubbed that throughout our heads. Then the girls followed it up with a chocolate mask! We closed our eyes while we let the mask dry and actually felt relaxed! I am surprised to see the little wrinkles on my forehead diminish! My skin feels so soft! I decided to look up the recipe for homemade chocolate masks. It is surprisingly simple:

1/3 cup cocoa
1/4 cup honey (organic is better)
2 Tbsp heavy cream or sour cream
3 tsp oatmeal powder

mix it into a paste. put it on your face, avoid eyes.
Leave it on till dry.
wash away with warm water.

I also found a homemade remedy for pimples:
Honey and cinnamon mixed to a paste. dot it on the pimple and leave for 20 minutes. the next day it will be smaller. You can repeat it every day until the pimple is gone.

give these recipes a try and let me know how it works. I found the chocolate smell very relaxing and it took the angst out of the head lice thing!

    I don't envy you with the head lice. We had rounds with that a few years back, and what a pain. My mom had found some recipe online using a bunch of different oils (like lavender and tea tree oil). It smelled awful, but it worked!

Thanks for sharing all this. My daughter might like the pimple solution! Not that I would use it on this one, but right now she has one right in her ear and it's driving her crazy!

My short but sweet daily, weekly, monthly goals

I read Queridaana blog about her goals and I have decided to make my own list of goals as well. I can't keep a long list so I have decided to keep the daily list to two goals, my weekly list to three goals and my monthly or long term list to 4 goals. I hope that by keeping my lists short, that I will actually do them this time!

Daily goals: exercise for at least 30 minutes. If I am biking, it has to be for an hour.
Eat more vegetable/fruit servings - 6 or more.

Weekly goals: stick to weighing myself once a week.
compliment myself when I look in the mirror.
learn to love myself enough to do what is best for me.

Monthly goals: lose 6-8 pounds each month.
find a fun way to be active.
read a book of the Bible in a month.
spend some fun time with the family.
get my family to eat and like one new healthy food.

I hope that this will go a long way to getting my in shape for the MS 150 as well as make me a better person, inside and out!

What is it about mom being sick that gives all other members the freedom to royally mess up the house and leave it for mom when she gets well again? It is completely unfair! I am rebelling and I am going to let my kids spend their Friday cleaning the house that they made look like a whirlwind of chaos! In real adult life that is what happens. You make the mess, you clean it up! I am a little bit jealous of my friends who tell me that they don't clean the house. I think that I would love to have someone else do the thankless job of cleaning up the Legos, the clean laundry dumped on the couch/floor, the 10 pages of birthday wish lists that add more Legos to the already exhaustible pile. and bits of dried food on plates that are laying around the tables.

Just ranting a raving as I look at the whole bit of mama drama!

    I can totally sympathize with you there. It seems if i don't keep at it; it just gets worse. i hate people who brag about stuff like that. When i goon the senior van once a week there is a lady who likes to brag about what she is going to buy or that she pays someone to come and clean her little trailer. i think she would be in better shape if she did that herself. NELLJONES is right it is exercise. Someone told me on one of my blogs that she bends way down to pick stuff up; dances around as she vacuums and other stuff like that. You might want to try it.

    I think it's our cross to bear, the continuous cleaning. If it isn't the kids' mess it's hubby's and it never ends. It IS, however, really good exercise. That's how I look at it. If I'm stuck with doing a never ending thankless task, it can at least help keep me in shape.
