Quick Vent

Tuesday, March 12, 2013

This is a silly, random vent. Please feel free to skip this blog emoticon

I'm going to try to figure out how to contact Spark and see why this is happening, but I am super frustrated right now.

I am a slow runner. Most of the time, I embrace it. I'm a proud member of the Slow, Fat Runners Team (if you're like me, check out that team! Lots of love and support over there for us slow pokes!).

For a while, Spark has admitted that I have a 14 to 15 minute per mile pace. These past two runs, I have run as hard as I could, and Spark is still calculating my calories as "walking: 4 mph (15 minutes per mile)."

So, aside from the slight insult of being calculated as "walking," I am still showing a calorie burn at 15 minute miles. Out of frustration, I found a pace calculator online, and both of those runs were under 14 minute paces! It finally says "14/Min/Mile" under the "Pace" section, but calculating my calorie burn at 15 minutes. Why?

Ok, random vent over.

It has nothing to do with how slow you are. I am not a fast runner nor a slow runner, just right in between. My nike+ would say I ran at a certain pace and when I tracked it the pace and calories were way off. so I just kinda input my own information after deleting the erroneous stuff of course.

I'm sorry it's so frustrating!! I think the problem is just that they don't have anything between the 12min mile and the 15min mile pace! I can't even find the 14min/mile pace you mentioned! I think I ran into this before and I just recorded it as a quicker pace for less time. I also wish there was running @ "x"min/mile on hills (like for my race), but then I think we are getting too technical!

I wish I had a solution for you..... emoticon

I hope they're able to resolve your issue - I can see why this would be totally frustrating. In the meantime, nice job on improving your pace and pushing!

That is frustrating. I'm a slow runner, too. I think the calories burned is determined by how hard your body is working more than how fast you're actually running. Of course, you will burn more calories the faster you run, but I don't buy into the fact that you can calculate calories burned based solely on speed. Have you considered buying a heartrate monitor. Those are more accurate. I love mine. Then you can manually enter your calories burned.

Sorry to hear about this. There has to be a way to contact them, but I don't know how, but someone that posts after me will probably know.
I can see where that would make you feel bad.
Great job on the effort though with running!

March Goals and Progress Thus Far

Wednesday, March 06, 2013

As some of you know, I came up with a points system last month to use with my goals. I put a points value on each goal, and then also came up with a goal to complete a certain number of the mini-goals. I get rewards based on how many points, and how many of the goals I complete. It was a huge success; even though I didn't meet all of my goals, I didn't become unmotivated.

With that in mind, I am going to repeat the exercise this month, just changed up a little bit. Below are the goals, and the number of points that I can get for each goal. In parenthesis, I've added in how many points I have for each one.

For reaching 190 points, I will reward myself with a hair cut. For completing 10 out of the 13 goals, I will reward myself with a jeans-buying trip to Goodwill (badly needed by this point!).

We are currently 19.35% through the month.

1. Run 50 miles - 50 (12 = 24%)
2. Eat in range 27 days this month - 27 (5 = 18.51%)
3. Drink 8 cups of water per day for 27 days - 27 (5 = 18.51%)
4. Save $100 - 1 (0)
5. Read with the boys 13 nights this month - 13 (3 = 23.07%)
6. Brush my teeth 28 days - 28 (5 = 17.85%)
7. Consume 4 servings of produce each day for 25 days this month - 25 (4 = 16%)
8. Do 350 dumbbell rows - 7 (45 completed = 12.85%)
9. Do 500 push-ups - 5 (80 completed = 16%)
10. Do 1,000 squats - 10 (250 completed = 25%)
11. 1,600 seconds in plank position - 16 (16.25%)
12. 350 minutes stretching - 7 (13 minutes completed = 3.71% - YIKES)
13. 1,100 fitness minutes - 11 (258 minutes completed = 23.45%)

I know the system sounds a bit convoluted, but it is really working for me!

The exercises at the end are part of the Sparking as a Team Challenge, which is dedicated to Tara this month. I suggest everyone take a look into the team, it's pretty small, but lots of cheering each other on! You do not have to do the same amount; everyone just does what they can, and hopefully we balance each other out so that the team meets the team goals.

The stretching/yoga one is going to be a big challenge for me. We'll see what happens!

I also have my 10K coming up on March 16th, and I am already getting twitchy! I am a very slow runner, a whopping 15 minute pace. I looked up the race results from last year, and only two people were that slow: the last two people to cross the finish line, and they were both senior citizens. I know I can run the distance, no problem. I'm hoping it'll go a bit faster than I do on the treadmill. The atmosphere for that race last year (I did the 5K that day) was fantastic, and I expect the same atmosphere this year as well. After this race, I am going to train for a couple of 5Ks. I want my speed down a bit, so my focus will shift from mileage to speed.

If you made it this far, thank you!

You're a slow runner at a 15 minute pace? I wish I could pull that pace off! LOL. Good luck with the 10 K. I've only done fundraiser 5ks and they are a lot of fun! Just remember dont get all excited and go faster then you can handle at the start! Just take your time!

You are doing so great! I find that my time greatly improves during races. There is more going on to keep my mind off of what my body is going through. I think you will surprise yourself and run it a bit faster than your 15min miles!

Update on February Progress

Friday, March 01, 2013

Hello! I hope everyone has had a good week!

Here are the stats for February:
- Run 50 miles (50 points possible) 51 done, goal met! WOOHOO!
- Eat in calorie range 25 out of 28 days (25 points possible) 25/28 Goal met, baby!
- 8 glasses of water drunk 25 out of 28 days (25 points possible) Missed this one, and don't have the exact number since I lost the stupid paper.
- Get car inspected and tags renewed (1 point) Hubby did it, but I'm taking the point anyway!
- Get truck inspected and tags renewed (1 point) HUBBY DID IT, BUT I'M GOING TO GIVE MYSELF THE POINT ANYWAY!
- Read with kids 12 nights out of 28 (12 points possible) 13/12 Goal met!
- Brush teeth 25 out of 28 days (25 points possible) Same as the water one.
- Eat 3 servings of produce per day for 25 out of 28 days (25 points possible) 25/28 Goal met!
- Save $100 (1 point possible) Goal met!

So, I reached all but two of my goals. That qualifies me to get that reward. I don't know exactly how many stars I got because I lost the paper I was keeping track on! I know I beat the 125, though, so I get that reward as well. I just need the tax refund check to get here so I can go buy my new gear!

For Sparking as a Team's February challenge, we had to do several strength moves, and get some miles in. I got just under my goal amounts in running and planks, and did extra push-ups and squats. It all balances out, right?

I'll put my March goals blog up next week. Need to get back to work!

February Status Update

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

I just realized I haven't done an update yet. Oops!

- Run 50 miles (50 points possible) 36 OUT OF 50 DONE SO FAR! WOOHOO!
- Eat in calorie range 25 out of 28 days (25 points possible) 17/28 SO FAR, ON TRACK!
- 8 glasses of water drunk 25 out of 28 days (25 points possible) 16/28 SO FAR, IN THE DANGER ZONE BUT CAN STILL MAKE IT IF I'M DILIGENT
- Get car inspected and tags renewed (1 point) NOT YET
- Get truck inspected and tags renewed (1 point) HUBBY DID IT, BUT I'M GOING TO GIVE MYSELF THE POINT ANYWAY!
- Read with kids 12 nights out of 28 (12 points possible) 8/12 SO FAR, ON TRACK!
- Brush teeth 25 out of 28 days (25 points possible) 16/28 SO FAR, IN THE DANGER ZONE BUT CAN MAKE IT IF I'M CAREFUL
- Eat 3 servings of produce per day for 25 out of 28 days (25 points possible) 16/28 SO FAR, I GOT LAZY OVER THE WEEKEND!
- Save $100 (1 point possible) ON TRACK!

So, basically, I am doing pretty darn well with this thus far. I LOVE the new points system that I am working on! So far, I have 110 points, so just 15 points away from my first reward! I am also on track to achieve enough goals to get my big reward for the month. I am hoping to be able to afford the new workout pants and shoes, and get the shoes broken in, before my 10K in a couple weeks. We shall see!

Random Side Effect of Losing Weight

Wednesday, February 06, 2013

So, I am a bit of a cheapskate, and refuse to buy regular clothes until I am closer to my goal. I have been on this weight loss journey for over a year now, and as of last November (last time I stepped on a scale...) I had lost about 25 pounds.
What clothes I have bought has, for the most part, been Goodwill when my current clothes were flat-out falling off. Everything else, I make do with, since I don't want to buy new pieces just to have them not fit when I get to maintenance.
My arms have been bugging me whenever I wear long sleeve shirts for the last couple months, and I could NOT figure out why. Just now, I was washing a coffee pot, and had to push my sleeves up every few seconds.
Finally, it dawned on me- my arms are too small for me to push my sleeves up! I push them up, and they fall right back down, because my sweaters from last year fit arms that were several inches bigger!

I never would have imagined this would be an issue!

Note to self: run to goodwill for some smaller sweaters!

GoodWill is the best place to get clothes when you are losing. That is my plan. I have about 3-4 pair of jeans that just barely fit 5 years ago still in the back of my closet. I am about 1/2 way to getting into them. But after them where do I go? I don't plan on buying new clothes (except for a few things for my two trips coming up) until I am where I need to be physically.
Great Job on the weight loss. Or weight disposal I should say.
Keep up the good work
