Men Washing Dishes

Sunday, August 19, 2012

I cannot understand why washing dishes doesn't count as aerobic exercise for men.

It's definitely an upper-body workout, right?

All you have to do is get the water real hot, and try to get through that huge pile before it gets cold. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Second Day of Revised Goals

Friday, August 17, 2012

Whew! I'm not sure how this is going to go. Cutting 400 calories per day seems like a lot. I may have to work down to it a little at a time.

Something I learned already - If you pan broil a tilapia filet, make a piece of toast, and grind up fresh swiss chard, beet greens, and radicchio leaves in the food processor with a little home made oil and vinegar salad dressing, then bring the three together, you end up with something that's delicious and keeps you satisfied for quite awhile.

I make my own bread from fresh ground organic hard red winter wheat, and pan broil in a well seasoned cast iron skillet. My dressing doesn't have anything in it I can't both spell and pronounce.

In the last month I have dropped a lot of calories from my eating just be eating more vegetables and limiting my breads. I am always amazed how few calories are in an omelette loaded with mushrooms, onions, peppers and other vegetables. And afterwards, I am always stuffed!

I've made several adjustments to my calorie range since hitting my original goal, mostly 100 or 200 calories at a time. I typically eat to the new range for a week before making another change. I think I cut 400 at once when my bad foot was keeping me from getting 10K steps per day; I knew I'd be burning fewer calories till the foot got better.

It may seem odd to change the range by only 100 calories when the range itself is 350 calories wide, but I haven't been very good at deliberately eating more toward the middle of the range. I need to move the range to either force myself to eat more, or allow myself to eat less.

Based on my own experience, I'd tell you not to expect to find a set range that's good for all time. You may have to keep adjusting it to accommodate how your life changes over time.

Own bread - must taste wonderful!
And wherefrom did you cut the 400 kcal off?
3000 to 2600 or 1600 to 1200? Very different!

Tilapia is one of my staples...always looking for new ways to spice it up. All the best, have a great weekend.

Thanks for your comments and help.

What I made isn't really anything like this salsa verde.
http://mexicanfood.about.com/od/sup
ersalsas/r/salsaverde.htm
R>It's probably closer to chopped sorrel or cress. Few ingredients, greens from the kitchen garden just out our front door and the dressing. It's not hot at all, a bit of a bitter flavor. It's much coarser than the picture of the salsa verde in the link, has fewer ingredients, and takes seconds to make.

Here's a pic I found on the internet. What I make is probably a little coarser than this. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QyodBQtQu

I often sprinkle a little sumac on fish, or anything else for that matter. It's like what a squeeze of lemon is supposed to taste like, only better. I get it in bulk from a health food store.

    Is that salsa verde?

I'm also going to start aiming for the bottom end of my calorie range, not the top.

I like your idea of gradually reducing to the 400 calorie amount. Let your body adjust.

Good luck! emoticon

Starting again, making it work

Wednesday, August 15, 2012

This morning I reset my weight loss and fitness goals. I set a short term weight loss goal, and set my fitness goals to more closely reflect what I actually do, which is about twice where my exercise minutes had been. The automatic nutrition calculator returned surprising results. It actually cut about 400 calories from my daily recommendation. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

Back to basics

Tuesday, August 14, 2012

What I've decided to do is to go back to what I probably should have done when I first started with Spark People, but didn't know about. I'm doing the SparkDiet program under the Healthy Lifestyle tab here:
www.sparkpeople.com/resource/sparkdi
et.asp

I'm coupling that with some seriously helpful work on the Coach Dean series, Mind Over Body, here:
www.sparkpeople.com/resource/mind_ov
er_body_fat.asp

Changing the focus of my spark people priorities will mean spending less time on sparkpoints activities like quizzes, unrelated articles, wall huddles, and posting login points.

It does not mean I want to loose touch with my friends, their blogs, their comments, and support. It seems to me right now that it's kind of like changing your nutritional focus from empty calories to more nutritionally dense foods. At least for now.

Here are two examples of related articles that are going to be very helpful for me:
www.sparkpeople.com/resource/wellnes
s_articles.asp?id=533

www.sparkpeople.com/resource/wellnes
s_articles.asp?id=497

If you haven't found them yet yourself, maybe they'll help you too.

Great stuff...and believe totally in the things I read on your links. I know I've spent an inordinate time reading articles and trying to educate myself and find out more about the "how to's" to successful weight loss and maintenance. Wishing you all the best in your quest and will fully understand if you do/don't post as often. Here for ya anytime as I know you will be for me. Have a goodun.

Steaming grains/Steaming veggies

Tuesday, August 14, 2012

This morning, when I was putting the buckwheat on to cook, it suddenly came to me. Well, duh. I grabbed the steamer basket, put a few servings of veggies into it (sweet potato is a good one, since the potassium has a tendency to leach out), and shoved it on top of my pot. All those good steamed veggies, excellent flavor in my buckwheat, saved all those nutrients. Now if I can just get my wife to start doing it too... emoticon emoticon
