Sun After Rain

Wednesday, November 14, 2012

Sunny and chilly today, warm and rainy yesterday. Back to doing Coach Nicole's Bootcamp series, and the SparkDiet program to build consistency. What will it be for cardio today - walking, firewood, heavy bag, swinging rocks? Thyme will tell.

Drat. I just missed the mailmamal, and there's something I wanted to send. It's only a mile up the road to the nearest post office.

Catching up

Monday, November 12, 2012

Well, it's been awhile since I let folks know what's been going on here, so I guess I'll ramble on a bit.

First off, the job I was working that kept me away from 5:30 AM til 7:00 PM finished up last week. That means that I'm basically unemployed until more work comes my way. It feels good. I've been recuperating and getting stuff done around the place.

I've been getting more exercise in, but not as much as I'd like to, and need to: taking more walks, a little time each morning on the exercise bike. I read up a bit on kettlebells, and the exercises sound interesting, but I have no desire to buy some at this point. Instead I've been doing a few of the basic beginner moves with some nice rocks from out front. I've also put the heavy bag that my son left hanging in the garage back into service. Between those two things I've been getting sore in some new places.

On the home front, my wife (no longer so dear) was here over the weekend with a truck to pick up her larger furniture. She spent a couple of days getting things ready, then had a few friends to help load. I'm finding myself very glad to have her getting her things out. It's made a lot more room for me, and I've been able to get more cleaning done (she pretty much stopped doing any housework the last few months before she left).

An interesting thing happened the evening before she got here. My son called from Tenn. to see how I'm doing, give some support. He knew she was coming to get things. Well, he told me that pretty much from the time he was able to understand about relationships, he didn't like the way she was treating people. In fact, she was a pretty big factor in why he moved out when he did. I'd never known that.

Today's been a great day. The weather's been beautiful. Temps in the 60s, sunny, hardly like a normal November day in Maine. I was able to get quite a bit done. I moved the extra bed and a couple of piles of books out of my bedroom. Good aerobic, it entailed several trips up and down the stairs. Then it was outdoors to clean up one of the vegetable beds and cover it so I'll be able to keep getting fresh greens out of it for a few more weeks. Next it was on to cutting and splitting firewood.

One of the things I've been feeling free to do now has been to dig out our old recorders (block flutes), clean them up and play them a little. My family had a full consort at one time, and used to play for church and things. It makes me laugh to see how the chickens react to my melodic improvisations. I take turns playing three different voices, soprano, alto, and tenor. The bass belonged to my oldest brother, and he took it back to Colorado with him after Mom's funeral.

I find myself enjoying the quiet more and more. I feel like I'm being able to get back in touch with who I am after a long time of having to adapt myself to others' opinions, comments, and expectations. Quiet thankfulness isn't what I'd expected to be feeling at this point.

A better day today

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

Things went a little better today. When I felt like things were getting away from me again I climbed onto the exercise bike for 10 minutes or so. That got me warmed up a little, so I did Day 3 of the 7 day Boot Camp. Then this evening I went and walked out my Halloween Trot, or whatever they called it. People are pretty friendly here, most folks give you a smile or wave when they drive past.

Got a call from the office in the early afternoon. Tomorrow we start back to work on the project that got interrupted by the storm.

Had to do some digging and scratching to find a fish chowder with a reasonable amount of calories. I made mine with skim milk and a little lean ham instead of whole milk, cream, butter, and bacon. Oh yea, just side comment, I found a couple of small leeks in the fridge from the garden; boy did they ever perk up the tasty. emoticon

I always put leeks in my fish pie and when I make cullen skink. They go brilliantly well with smoked fish.

Not such a good day today

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

Never really got going today. Let myself get into a blue slump. Didn't get enough exercise. Ate too much. It's all a part of life, I guess. Tomorrow is anther day.

Rain, wind and thunder off and on today. Warm though. Effects of the hurricane. A little flooding in the area, none near me. There've been some power outages around, but nothing bad enough nearby for me to get called out to guard any downed lines.

Much to be thankful for.

Hope you all have a great Halloween.

Each day at midnight we get to start over again. The only thing we need to carry forward is the lessons learned. If there were not bad days, we would not appreciate the good days that are ahead. Good luck today. I hope it is a different color.

Did day 2

Monday, October 29, 2012

It was only 10 minutes of lower body workout, and I still have some cardio to do - later. I sure hope she's getting me ready for more to come. I'm tired of overdoing it, especially after a long day of work.

Speaking of which, a day off work today because of the storm coming in. Enjoying getting ready for it since we aren't going to get hammered like they thought we would at first. Borrowed a Trooper in case I happen to get called out on line watch duty, loaded my equipment into it.

Of course, had to make other preparations too, just in case power goes out. Made a couple of quarts of yummy fish chowder (easy to heat on the wood stove), a couple of pounds of great northern beans, and a three pound apple pie. Add that to all the stuff in the freezer. the precooked steel cut oats, and the cut fruit ready to stir into the nonfat greek yogurt, and I'd say I'm ready to ride it out. Next will come filling a few more buckets with water.
