OH NO! I have to cook for T' Day?

Friday, November 18, 2011

I'll spend the weekend preparing for Thanksgiving. See, I've never had to cook for the holidays, but my mom moved to Georgia so I have to cook. Ugggggghhhhhh. OK, I'll cook and I will like it. I found some good recipes and plan on preparing some different dishes that mom never made - a new tradition so to speak.

I will survive.....I guess.

If you have to eat out

Thursday, November 17, 2011

Since I joined SP I've cut back on eating fast food tremendously. I used to eat out 3-4 a week. Now it's more like 2-3 times a month, and it's rarely at a fast food restaurant.

Here's an article that might help you make better choices when you have to eat out.

It amazes me how many people eat out everyday. I've always been more of a bring your own lunch kind of person. Financially, it makes sence to me.

I still love to eat out but I try to make it only a special treat, and I try to make healthy choices. Eating at home is easier on the waistline and easier on the wallet too! emoticon

I used to eat out at mostly fast food places 5 to 6 times a week and now I'm down to zero to 3 times a month. I still miss it but I know it's not good for me.

High School

Wednesday, November 16, 2011

My son will be in high school next year. So we went to the open house last night.

I am not a fan of high school. I didn't enjoy my time when I was there and I home-schooled my daughter from seventh grade on. So I haven't had to deal with that scene for thirty years.

Don't get me wrong, I loved learning and I got good grades, but the school was a nightmare.

There was a lot of fighting, racial tensions, people smoking in the bathrooms, lots of people overdosing on drugs. There were even times when I carried a knife because of fear. I came close to dropping out, but I refused to let anybody stop me from walking across that stage. I shutter when I think about that place. I hear they have metal detectors and the school is now being run by gangs.

I've heard a lot of bad things about this high school as well, but then again, there was a rumor going around about the Intermediate School that made all of us parents a nervous wreck. It was that the kids were making out under the stairs. NOT TRUE! This school is on total lock down all day. The kids have to carry a passport that has to be signed by every teacher or staff member so that their whereabouts are monitored.

I have never seen a fight occur after school and the Principal and other staff stands outside the school every day until all the buses have gone and she makes sure the student don't linger around.

The High School Principal is a very nice woman, who is genuinely concerned and very easy to talk to....she is also the acting Vice-Principal for he Intermediate School and runs the Parent Advisory Board.

I am impressed with the classes they are offering. Their College Prep program allows students to acquire college credits, they get a Microsoft Word Certification....free, they have a ton of grants, a new Performing and Fine Arts program and so much more.

The teachers seem dedicated, understanding and happy.

We will be looking at the technology high school next week.

Keep us prayed up and keep the advice rolling cause I'm going to need as much support as I can get to make it through those 4 years. emoticon

It is a shame what has become of our society that we have to live in these conditions. Life really was easier when I went to school.

At least you have some options.

Best of luck with this transition and yes, I will be on the prayer team ;-)

My daughter is a Sophomore and she loves her high school. Someone wrote, success in HS is based off the friends they hang with,I agree. I have kept my daughter surrounded with a good friend base. It's so important for them to have friends who have high goals for success. This keeps them on track and happy during their high school years. I know her 10th year has been a bit more challenging. She has a language this year and it is a different type of study then she was use to. I also think finding a elective they enjoy helps them with their other classes. She has selected chorus for a high school elective. The teacher keeps them busy and has many functions for them to perform at. They dress in uniforms and feel very proud of their performances. I have other mother/friends who have their children in band another big group of great elective. Finding what they enjoy to keep them excited about school is very key! Hope this info helps. It's a challenge for parents to find the right key for their child to keep them safe and challenged. Best wishes to your child's success in HS.

You're already on it, which shows he will be just fine wherever you decide to have him attend. My son is a Jr. and I love his h.s. It's actually the same one I went to, although now it is a charter, and is amazing. They have to meet the A-G requirements to graduate, which means they can go straight to a 4 year college with all those credits too. My son loves it, and although he's not as social as I was (Which I was worried about), he has his group of friends and gets along with everybody else, so he's happy, I'm happy! Oh, and he's on the Honor roll, and had a 1.8 GPA in 6th grade...just says how far he's come, and what a difference caring staff can make. Will say a serenity prayer for ya, but you got this! emoticon

I am certain you will know and recognize the bet high school option. My daughter will be going to high school in 3 years. Unfortunately, we did not have a choice and I dread the day and the school.

We worried too when our son transferred from a rural country school to the county high school which I attended years ago and had the same experiences as you had. In the years since I attended many things had changed. I'm not going to tell you it is perfect because it isn't but the problems now are chiefly associated with a small percentage of the population like in adult life. Fighting, racial tension, smoking, drugs were chiefly confined to this group. In 4 years my son was never threatened, never bullied, never experienced racial problems, didn't smoke, drink alcohol, or use drugs. He got straight A's, graduated #1 out of a class of close to 400, and was a valedictorian. It's what you make of it. My advice it to help arrange for him to find the right kind of friends because according to the principal of our tiny country school that is the chief key to success.

Hang in there. My high school experience was different than yours, but my elementary school experience sucked. So I do know a little about what you're referring to.

That being said, it sounds like you are going into things with your eyes open. And that will greatly help your son. Being open with him so that he feels like he can come to you with any problems or issues will definitely help to ensure his experience is different than yours.

Good luck touring the tech high school next week! Sounds like you at least have some good options!

I tried

Tuesday, November 15, 2011

OK, So being- happy no matter- what isn't easy...... at least not for me. I tried it all day yesterday and caught myself a few times feeling grumpy and grouchy.

At least I was more conscious of my feelings.

Thanks for trying too Sparkfriends.

No one can be happy all the time. If you are conscious of your feelings and can smile when you're feeling down, that's okay. But being happy all the time, people aren't made for that. Try being happy MOST of the time, but being okay all of the time.

I do like Bladkrose_22's advise on the feeling journal... but then again, you know how I feel about journals!!

That's the important thing. Try keeping a 'Feeling Journal'. Once an hour, rate your feelings on a scale of 1-10. 10 being Happy Feet kind of Happy, and 1 being Edward Sissorhands kind of Happy.

Then try to figure out what changes in those time frames, and what is causing the feelings.
