What would you do?

What would you do?

Have any of you watched a show called What Would You Do? Hosted by John Quinones, from ABC.

The show presents fake scenarios in different situations as the cameras roll people do things like verbally attack a fat woman, physically assault a homeless person, refuse to serve a woman dressed in Muslim wear, and so on. All the perpetrators and victims are actors. But the passerbys are real people who either react, interact, or ignore what’s going on.

Then Mr Quinones and the camera crew come out of nowhere and confront the observers about their actions or non actions.

It’s sort of a morality check for human beings.

Well my son loves this show and he gets so serious about some of the issues. On the episode with the homeless man being beaten by some young men, he even cried. I had to remind him it wasn’t real.

“I know it’s not real on this show, but things like this really happen to them.” he said.

He ‘s right, of course it happens all the time. As a matter of fact, two times this week I’ve observed some terrible behavior by two adults.

One was in the mall at a sneaker store where I observed a man carrying his young son- about 3 or 4yrs old. The man put the boy down and started browsing the racks and talking to the shoe salesman. The little boy started walking around looking at the sneakers and being a little mischief (nothing terrible). Well, all of a sudden the father turns around and starts yelling at the kid.

“SIt down!” “Get over here!” “Shut the &*%# up!”

I felt numb. My mind shot back to that T.V. show. What Would You Do?

The next thing I know the guy walks over to the kid and hits him a couple of time on his back- hard. The kid didn’t even cry, it’s like he was immune to it. He just got this look on his face that said, One day my turn will come. So I look at the guy like he’s crazy and he pulls the kid away and leaves the store.

So back to the question. I kept asking myself, What should I do? Call the police? I know someone who hit his daughter in public (just a tap on the rump, for doing a disappearing act under the shirts, and he wound up in court, and anger management classes.)Confront the father? He looked like a rough type of guy who might punch a woman without giving it a second thought.

Well, guess what? I did nothing. I’m ashamed to say it but I didn’t do a thing to help that poor kid.

It happened again yesterday. My DD was driving and we were in traffic on a busy Philly street. I looked over and saw a woman getting very frustrated about something in the back seat. She pulled a rosary bead from her rear view mirror, turned around and started hitting a small child who was sitting in the back seat. I was shocked.

I started to roll down my window and at least express my disgust. But DD pulled off.
Maybe for the best who know’s the woman could’ve been carrying a gun for all I know.

What would you do?

Great thought-provoking blog! It's wonderful to be able to intervene, but with the way people react - especially when you don't have a psych and med history medical chart on them -- it can be pretty scary. Having intervened due to clinical training, with an outcome I still get to see everyday,
I, uhhh, am more likely to call DSS, 911, or someone with a license to carry weaponry.

Hindsight is 20/20. I hope I would be brave enough to do the right thing but you don't know how people would react these days. Unfortunately many people in our society do not have a sense of shame and do not worry about what anyone else thinks about their behavior. They also do not fear consequences because they know others are afraid of lawsuits.

I respect your feelings about this. You are a decent human being.

Wow. I would want to do something just like you wanted, but in this day and age you ahve to fear for yourself too.

I would not confront people like this directly because they are violent but you can always turn their license plate in to DCFS.

When it comes to a child, I'd be in their face. Especially in a public place with security...
At least in my mind I would...

Those are both scary scenarios and unfortunately we do have to worry about those people going off the deep end on us. I think it even more compounded when we have our kids w/ us because we want to show them how to stand up but we also want to protect them. I typically would recommend getting whatever information you can - good description of the guy, asking the cashier to flag his info, license plate numbers etc and contacting the police and child protective services. Sometimes doing or saying something to the kid or parent in public can make the abuse worse when they get home - 'see what you made the lady do' so do what you can do work behind the scenes. Remember that even thinking about it is doing something - preparing you for the next time, sending positive energy out to the kid, bringing about more discussion.

The heat has finally backed off. It feels so good out here. But we are in for some stormy weather today. I'll take that over the heatwave for now.

We have a little rain and cooler temps, but we need a lot more rain. There has been some funky weather in our part of the woods this year.

Yes. It has backed off here too. I love rainy days. That means I don't have to water my garden, it gets that natural watering with all of the natural nutrients.

Thank you for viewing my vlog. It helps to know that others celebrate with me. God bless you.
