Celebrating an Anniversary

Five years ago today, I officially started taking back control of my life and health. In preparation for my Lap-Band surgery on October 5, 2007, I started the pre-op liquid diet to prepare me for surgery. Lost 22 pounds alone in that 2 weeks period. Six months later, I was 120 pounds lighter than what I weighed on Sept 21, 2007. Today, a total of 160 pounds (give or take 5 pounds on any given day). And my health and fitness are back. A nice anniversary for me to celebrate!!

You are the poster child for lap band success. That picture is - well, quite frankly - nothing short of AMAZING!!!! (Dare I say you almost look TOO thin?! LOL!) It's a great day when ...

... you visit your cardiologist for a routine stress-echocardiogram (actually, there is no "routine" visit if you've undergone double bypass surgery 2 years ago) ... AND...

... you get through 19 minutes on the treadmill (measured using the Bruce protocol, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_protocol , which means getting up to 6mph and a 22% incline)... AND...

... your heart rate maxes out at 175 (for the last 3 minutes) and your blood pressure maxes at 190/85... AND

... it only takes 2 minutes of recovery time to get the heart rate back down to 70 (and the blood pressure a perfect 120/80) ... AND...

... the EKG is completely normal ... AND ...

... you do this when you're 52 years old and weigh 185 pounds, when 4 years ago you weighed 320+ ...AND finally ...

... you're told by the cardiologist that you have an ultra-healthy heart and are a poster-child for bariatric medical treatment!!

That's how my day started. It's a great day indeed!!

A quick warning about diabetes

Type 1, Type 2, or otherwise...if you're diabetic, get it under control asap cuz even if nothing's wrong now it will catch up with you. I've been "normal" for 4 years now, but learned my recent hand pain is from diabetic chiroarthropathy (sp?). Kinda sucks...

my sons boss is has type to didiets , i am not dibeitic but had carpel tunnel syndrome in left wrist when my youngest so was a baby i had a carpel tunnel release operation it worked well ,butbi have ran in both hand have had two finger fused so far on waiting list for other fingers.

Good luck with the OT and PT. Thanks for sharing. I have had numbness in my left hand for the last two weeks. We have ruled out a heart problem. Again good luck with the treatment.

Thanks Kathy. I will try looking at the site tomorrow. Sounds like mine is reversible, or at least able to keep it from worsening. But my Sahara are under control (A1c consistently 6 or less). Anyway...we shall see. Starting with least invasive treatment (OT/PT) and go from there. For now... no new meds and no scalpels/lasers :-)

Odd, my surgeon and I were talking about this today, when I had the stitches from my trigger finger surgery removed... he said a lot of his diabetic patients had difficulties in one way or another with the joints in their hands-- and that about a third of his patients were diabetic. I googled it, and here's the web address... I don't know how to add a link on a blog response, though I'm going to post it on the threads so you can look for it. There are a lot of joint issues that are more prevalent in diabetics than the general public... the good news is, according to the article, some of them at least are partly or wholly reversible with good glycemic control...

Were you watching your diet and checking yourself these last 4 years? The reason I ask is I have a brother with diabetes. He never checks himself or watches what he eats because he says he is okay when he visits the doctor. Ironically my brother has never been very much overweight and diabetes has never been in our family that we know of, I am morbidly obese but don't have it. That is one reason I am on SP. I am hoping to get rid of the weight so I don't get it.

Hi Debbieanne!! This specific symptom was pain in my knuckles. It hurts like h*lol to open and close my hands. I do have ocassional numbness and tingling which is due, art least in part to carpal tunnel syndrome (confirmed) and a possible pinched nerve in my neck (not confirmed). The symptom that REALLY scared me was my fingers turning ice cold and corpse-white in cool weather. Thar turned out to be Raynauds syndrome which seemed to have been caused by a medication for high blood pressure (Atenolol). I've since discontinued that med (my BP has been 120/80 for almost as long as I've had my band) and that symptom is lessening. But the arthritis like feeling is the diabetic chiroarthropathy. Starting with occupational therapy. We'll see what happens before considering carpal tunnel surgery - which may or may not help.

Thanks. Not quite the return I was planning but this is good. In the past I would try to get on Spark at the expense of other things in life. Now I have better balance so I'm content to just be able to login, log some stuff and leave a status.
