I don't really have a problem with real sugar. I sometimes crave it and sometimes eat it mindlessly when it's in front of me: at work, around Easter, around Halloween ... but mostly, I'm able to eat it in moderation, like a small ice cream cone on a hot summer day.
Artificial sweetener, however, is my downfall. Whether it's Splenda, Stevia, Equal or something else, I add it to everything: Plain greek yogurt, plain oatmeal, coffee, tea, grapefruit. And a lot of times, I have Diet Coke for the same reasons people binge eat, but to prevent binge eating. I'll drink it out of boredom (so I don't eat), I'll drink it because I'm stressed (so I don't eat) and I don't think it's a very effective way to manage negative emotions. Lately, I've also had a lot of stomach upsets so I've decided to try to cut it out. I'm telling myself just for this week, to make it manageable, but after three days, I really don't miss it. It's hard to get used to eating a grapefruit plain, or having unsweetened coffee (and especially unsweetened plain Greek yogurt!) but I'm getting used to it.
I'd rather have an occasional indulgence with real sugar than constantly eat artificial sugar.
