Back to the grindstone...

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

Okay, so I finally got the nerve to get on the scale on Tuesday. I gained 3 pounds over spring break. Not terribly bad b/c I knew it was coming. I do want to get it back off though.

School started back again on Monday. No catastrophes thus far. I am starting to focus in on the 3 upcoming races in April. I am doing the mini-tri in on the 4th and I have decided to volunteer at the April 11th race b/c I need to volunteer at one race a year for the running club I am a member of. On the 18th is the CASA race and I am definitley going to do that one! The school with the most kids who come will get a visit for Tech distance runners. We won it last year and the kids had a ball talking to them and running laps with them around our track. I hope we win again, but it's $20 a person which is fairly steep. I feel bad b/c one of my families has a dad, son, and daughter who consistently run races now, but I don't think they are going to do CASA b/c it would cost them $60. I don't blame them though. That is a lot of money for one race when the one on the 11th is only $5 per person.

Today I rode my husband's road bike around the neighborhood. He was seriously worried about me using his clipless pedals, but I had zero issues. After that I went back out and ran a mile. Surprisingly, I was under a 10:00 mile. I think the warm-up of the cycling helped me out!

I hope to get back to the pool tomorrow. I swam on Monday and I did 1,000 yards in about 30 minutes. I am not very fast, but I like to find a nice rhythm and keep it going. DH swam the same distance today in 24 minutes but he said he was totally busting his butt. I don't really push myself that hard on my swimming b/c I haven't been doing it for that long. I am enjoying just getting to swim the laps without being exhausted until I get out of the pool!

Doing great, as usual! You must be such an inspiration to your students! If I had a gym teacher like you, I might have picked up running a lot earlier! Glad that you are enjoying the biking and swimming, too!

Vacation time!

Wednesday, March 18, 2009

So we headed down to Fort Worth on Monday and have thoroughly enjoyed our time at my parents house. They have been out of town and are coming back tomorrow and I really miss seeing them.

For fun we have went out to dinner with some of our friends who live down here which has been a lot of fun! We also went to Six Flags yesterday. It is so expensive to go there though! Between renewing our out of area season passes, renting Flash Pass, and the food and parking, we spent around $250! It was $20 for lunch alone. I had a hot\dog, chips, and drink, and DH had a sausage on a stick and a medium drink. Ridiculous!!! I read in the paper that Six Flags was considering bankruptcy. How could they go bankrupt when they charge a minimum of $15 per car for parking, $50 per ticket to enter the park, and high prices for food and drink? It is just crazy!

We have been sticking to exercise since we got here with walking our dogs and then running a couple of miles today and a couple hours of walking at Six Flags yesterday. What we haven't been doing is eating very healthy. I know I am going to pay for it on the scale later, but I am good about losing weight gained over holidays or vacation. I am making an effort to drink more water as opposed to soda to cut back on calorie consumption, and I have been taking leftovers home to eat as meals later instead of totally gorging.

If you are visiting the Dallas/Fort Worth are, you MUST MUST eat at Babe's Chicken House. The only choices you get are chicken fried steak and fried chicken. It comes with salad(the dressing is awesome!), homemade biscuits, cream corn, and whipped potatoes with gravy on the side. EVERYTHING tastes fabulous! It is a heavy meal and big portion. The steak is the size of a plate and you get 4 pieces of fried chicken per person. All the food is served family style so it is normal to see waitresses come out with HUGE platters of fried chicken for large groups.

Today we went shopping at the outlets and I got a black leather Coach purse! It is so pretty and I plan on carrying it for a loooong time! If I don't, DH will kill me :o)

Your mini vacay sounds fun! We have contemplated taking the kids to Six Flags, but with 3 kids, it is easier for us to spend the day at Fiesta Texas...at least then we don't have the hotel cost! I hope you enjoy the rest of your week!

Glad you are enjoying your vacation! It would be criminal to miss out on the "local specialities", so enjoy.... there is always tomorrow for salads! Good thing you are staying at your parents' house so you can take home leftovers!

Yippie! 4 Mile Race this morning! *pic added*

Saturday, March 14, 2009

This morning was our 1/2/4 mile raceand we had a great turn out. I had 25 of my students show up to race in the 1 mile fun run and the 2 mile races. I also had a couple of parents participate too. I had 13 finishers in the 1 mile fun run and 12 finishers in the 2 mile.

One of my families who has 3 kids with me has a baby sister who will be in kinder next year. She has been BEGGING to run a race b/c she saw her big sister and big brothers run. She finally got her chance at the one mile fun run. That child ran a mile in 9:20 and she is freaking four years old!!!!!!! She finished, went up to her dad, and asked to run some more!

I did the 4 mile race and it was a challenging course! Of course anyone who is from here knows that this area of town is very hilly. The biggest one was running up to the softball fields. Oh God was that miserable! All I could think was "Here in a few minutes I will get to run down it!"

I ran my 4 mile race in exactly 44:00 which was exactly what I wanted. I wasn't honestly sure how I was going to do b/c I have been focusing on triathlon training more so I hadn't been flat out running much. A couple of miles here and there, but most of my focus has been on the swimming aspect. At mile 2 I was at 22:30 When I hit mile 3 I was at a 33:38 so If I wanted to run the 11 minute splits I had to pick up my pace a little on the last mile which I did. I glanced at my watch after running under the last bridge and realized that maybe my 11:00 split goal was attainable! I wasn't sure it would be b/c of the hills and stuff but I had a good sprint to the finish line and could not have been more happier!

Great job on your race! And, I know there was some drama related to your students' running, so I'm glad you had a good turnout for the 1 and 2 mile runs.

Have a great weekend!

I was actually very excited when I went to the doctor on Thursday and they weighed me in at 170 and that was in the afternoon after eating breakfast, lunch, and snack and with clothes on. I knew I was going to be okay and it was a huge sign of relief b/c I have not weight myself in a while. I am still under the 170 mark which is where I want to be!

Yesterday DH and I went to the pool and I swam laps for 25 minutes. I loved that I swam for so long without having to take a break. I also wore a swim cap for the first time and it was very helpful in keeping my hair out of the way, but it also helped keep my goggles nice and tight. So tight that I had to take them off and loosen them a bit b/c they were starting to hurt my face!

Way to go! That must have made your weekend! I'm glad to hear you are enjoying the swimming. Good to know about the swim cap / goggle thing. One my "issues" is with the goggles allowing water in. Have a great weekend!

my "aha" moment, triathlon training

Wednesday, March 04, 2009

So triathlon training has been fun. Today I swam for about 20 minutes. I actually took very few breaks as compared to my 15 minute swim on Monday. I managed to get my goggles on in a semi-good way so I wasn't having to mess with them all the time. Today I alternated with crawl and breaststoke. The crawl is very strenuous on the shoulders. (Even my volleyball strong shoulders find it hard!) I came home and ate a vegetarian dinner that Jay made, which was good, but I really did feel like I needed the protein so I threw in a granola bar. I than hopped on a mountain bike and rode 5 miles around my neighborhood. It took 25:30 to do 5 miles so I was okay with that. I prefer the mountain bike over Jay's road bike b/c the leaning over part on the road bike is so darn uncomfortable!

My "aha" moment kind of hit me. My food intake the past month or so hasn't been at it's best. I know I am eating out too much, and not getting a balance of everything I need. I haven't been weighing and measuring myself as consistently as I was. Soo..it kind of makes sense. I will have more self discipline with my food intake if I know I am going to weigh myself! If I am not eating right, it will show up on my scale and the measurements I do.

Making good progress on the tri training! I'm glad you are finding the mountain bike works for you. A lot of tris have mountain bike divisions.

I did 10 miles on the bike followed by 4 miles on the TM just now and it kicked my rear! And I just confessed to you my big secret about the swimming, so we'll see where that gets me!

Anyway, keep up the awesome work with your goals!
