Run # 130 Third pair of shoes

I got my new shoes yesterday so I took them for a spin today. They were comfortable, and my hips don't seem to hurt today so I think my shoes were due for replacement. Unfortunately, even though they were the same size as my last New Balance pair, by the end of the run my toes were hitting the end of my back they go and I have the next size up on order. Hopefully nothing will change much but the length. I am kind of surprised that I needed new shoes already; this pair only had about 280 miles on them, but I guess that is pretty close to 300. I'm not high mileage so I was hoping to get farther into the 300-400 mile range, but I suppose construction quality between brands could vary, etc. I don't know that is is worth paying more for something else to get another 100 miles...But I did try on some really nice Sauconys once. Maybe for the next pair. Turned in another 3 miles today in 38 minutes.


Run # 129 A tougher one

Today felt tough. I just couldn't seem to get up a good head of steam and I felt breathless a lot of the time. I took a few walk breaks, but I still chalked up 3 miles, which I didn't think I was going to make at the beginning. I made sure I ran on asphalt today. My feet started hurting a little at the end, and one set of toes felt like they were going numb. That was a new one. It seems like it is a bit early for new shoes but I have been a bit sore after the last couple runs, and normally it does not hurt. So I ordered new shoes last night. I have been running on the sidewalk a lot and I probably need to get away from that more. The other possibility is I know that I run toes out and I need to fix that to keep running long term, otherwise I will feel it in my knees/hips. That is exactly where I have been sore the last two times, so it is either that or the shoes or both. (Well, ok, maybe my longest run plays in there too.) I will be listening to my body very carefully the next few weeks. Should have new shoes for Friday's run. emoticon


Run #128 4 miles for 44 years

Today is my 44th birthday. I ran 4 miles to celebrate it. It was a bit challenging but really just the right level of challenge and I feel good. Two records fall today. I ran the farthest I ever have at the oldest I have ever been. Not bad for an aging chick.

Today I decided to work on faster and a little more intense versus distance or time, but of course meeting my criteria of a minimum of 30 minutes exercise. My first half of my run appears to have been averaging 6.3, which would definitely be a new high. The second half was around 5.3-5.5. I held the faster pace for as long as it felt comfortable, and was pleasantly surprised to find I lasted about 10 minutes before I had to start scaling back to breathe comfortably. It was an intense but pretty awesome run.

Today I ran with my heart rate monitor for the first time in about 4 months. I had quit taking it for a while because it was always alarmng on high heart rate, minutes after I started running. I was interested to know if anything had changed. Today my alarm beeped briefly at me only 3-4 times, and when I looked my high heart rate was 173-175, instead if in the 180's. And my heart rate didn't stay that high, It dropped back into the 150's. Also the first time it went off I was about 25 minutes into my run, not four. And at that point I think I had sped up a little--because I realized I was a long way from home and my run was going to go a bit long. So it seems all the hard work really is paying off! emoticon

The new portion control plan I started on about a month ago seems to be working really well. I'm rarely overeating. In fact some days I feel like I can't possibly eat all the food I have planned. My weight hasn't changed much, which is good. (I would stil like to lose another 5 pounds.) My weight hasn't gone up any. And I haven't counted a calorie in over a month. Counting calories was really hard to let go of. I was so tired of it after 4 years, but very afraid if I stopped I would gain again. This new method is easy, and it feels good. And I think I am eating better too. I think if I just stay relaxed and keep at this that the last 5 will come off. It's just time...
