Run 102 Baby Ducks!

Wednesday, May 16, 2012

I missed my Monday run. We were up til 2:00 Sunday and I thought I needed the sleep more. I did walk to work that day to help wake myself up. I thought about running yesterday, but I was still kine of tired and I thought I might need a break. So I resumed my regular scheduld this morning. I went to the park. Half of the waterway is still drained, but I did finally see some baby ducks at the other half. I might actually have missed them but a mom and son on their bike were pointing at something so I went over to see what. Sure enough, baby ducks! I also saw a lot of geese and remembered the downside to spring--lots of goose poo in the park. No baby geese, which seemed odd. My run was ok, feeling a little stalled out these days. I shook it up with a couple sprints at the end.

When I got to work this moning the wild turkey that has been hanging out in the neighborhood was sitting right in front of the front doors. That was pretty cool, getting to see it from about 3 feet away. He did not seem spooked by my presence at all.

Glad you got to see the baby ducks. I hope it's not a bad thing for the wild turkey to get so comfortable around people.

Just have to tell someone...

Sunday, May 13, 2012

I went shopping for shorts yesterday as the weather is finally warming up and I didn't have any that fit. On a whim at the rack I picked up both 8's and 10's. I was sure the 10's would fit, but didn't have much expectation for the 8's. I tried an 8 first. It fit. Wow. I have to say I never thought I would see that size again. But maybe I really will!

Very exciting indeed. I'm celebrating the 9/10 fit, but can't wait to see size 7/8 on a piece of clothing in my closet again.

Congratulations!!!

Run #101 Sprinklers, dog walkers & joggers

Friday, May 11, 2012

Either it was the day, or it turns out that cross-island on Grand Street is a very popular morning route. I didn't notice this on previous runs, but today there were a lot of joggers and dog walkers out. I got hit by the sprinkler at one of the churches and had a nice, cold, early hose down. I tried to dodge it but ran out of room and it just kept tracking me. Grand St turned out to be a good choice for my run today. I was having a bit of a slog, and I just kept telling myself, I can run to the next stoplight (nearly every block) an I kept going that way. Total 3.12 miles. I had plans for increasing my mileage early this year, but that doesn't seem to be happening. I think I am still becoming a stronger, better runner though, and increasing my fitness, I just feel like I should be able to do more, Maybe I am not pushing hard enough. On the other hand, I only have so much time to give, so I have to go faster if I can't go longer...Just stuff I think about.

emoticon for a mostly nice run. I've come across sprinklers like that ... they seem to be determined to catch people!

Run #100 The no baby duck, baby duck run

Wednesday, May 09, 2012

Today on my run I struck out on my original running route, which I have not done in months. I discovered my original run was about 2.4 miles. I went to the park, looking for baby ducks. Apparently baby ducks sleep much later than adult humans. I saw lots of ducks, and a night heron, and a robin, but no baby ducks. I didin't play any music on the first half of my run, because the battery in my player was low and I wanted to have it if/when the going got tough. I just focused on the sound & rhythm of my breathing, the sound of my footfalls, how hard my feet were striking, how my arms were swining, etc. Then when I headed for home I turned the music on. My calculations were a little off for the turn around point and I came in at 2.92 miles. All in all a decent run.

Baby ducks

Tuesday, May 08, 2012

Today I saw baby ducks on my way to work for the first time this season. It seemed kind of late in the season to me, but then I realized that I have not walked through the park in a long time. So tomorrow, for my 100th run, I am going to go looking for baby ducks.

How very fun to see them. Even if you don't spot them on your run, having your 100th be back out in the park should be very pleasant!

I hope you see some! Looking for baby ducks seems like a good distraction while you're running, too.
