Run # 87 5k again

Monday, April 02, 2012

This morning I decided to ignore the heart rate monitor on my Garmin and just keep running. I did give myself a couple minute walking break half way through my run. I don't know if that is a good idea or not--I can fantasize about all kinds of nightmare reasons not to train above my target zone, but I felt fine and my heart rate seems to sit at 177-180 conistently. It takes about 2.5 minutes of running to get the alarm to go off, then it never shuts up. I will be looking to see if it takes longer to go off in future days.

I signed myself and DH up for the Pacific Grove 5k in November today. We are tags 13 & 14. I don't know if DH's plantar facitis will let him run by then, but if not we'll have a nice walk and it's and excuse for a weekend away.

I felt the same way when I first tried jogging. So I was always checking my HR monitor. When the weather got cold I wore long sleeves and it was harder to check...and I broke my habbit of checking it! Now I just run by feeling.
I have to go super slow to keep it under 175 when I'm outside. (On the treadmill is easier) So I just had to build up to it. After 2 months I'm finally out of the low 180's during my 5k runs.
Keep making sure DH is stretching his foot several times a day. That helped me when I had that.

Keep up the good work. Slow and consistent wins the race! emoticon

Run # 86

Friday, March 30, 2012

Today I pushed a little harder. I'm still working with the Garmin and the heart rate monitor and all that. I just feel kind of like I can d o more than it says I should, and like already I can't run as far as I could before. That probably isn't true. Still working on going slower. I think my pace is probably pretty irregular. Good run today.

Run # 85 Post work run

Wednesday, March 28, 2012

This morning it was raining but the afternoon cleared off so I was really excited about going for a run after work. I've heard if you are a morning runner it can be really difficult to switch it up to afternoon/evening. Boy was that the truth! It felt like I had never run before! I did a lot more walking then running. Then just as I was hitting my stride my DH called on his way home and wanted to chat, and I couldn't sustain both. But anyway I got some exercise in.

Run # 84 More miles of pavement gone

Monday, March 26, 2012

Wow, I'm not that far from 100 runs!
Well, today it seemed to take longer to get the high heart rate alarm going, so either I am running slower or my body's capacity is improved. I don't know which. Of course once my heart rate is up around 177 it seems to stay there until I take a walk break. But is is pretty rock solid 168-177, and I do not feel labored breathing at all, and I can sustain the run without a lot of effort I think. So I really still don't know what to do with the data. If I listened to the Garmin I would only run for 3-4 minutes at a time, and then I would have to walk a couple minutes, and then if I started to run again the alarm would go off almost immediately again. So I am trying to use this as a tool to monitor how I feel, but not follow it absolutely. My mileage has decreased since getting it.

Run # 83 Forgotten blog part 2, Friday March 23 run

Monday, March 26, 2012

Today's run felt good. I think the walking breaks are probably helpful. I am trying to pay attention to how my body feels when my "heart rate too high" alarm goes off. My breathing is usually fine I think. Sometimes my legs feel tired. If everything feels tired and like my form might be off I give myself a walk break and let my heart rate come down a bit.

Seems like a good way to balance the machine's announcement that your heart is too high with how you're actually feeling.
