Today I ran to the beach and back. It was chilly and windy, but with my scarf and mittens on at the start I stayed warm enough. Although it wasn't into the wind today was a bit of a slog. Grand Street has stoplights every block or two at the north end of the island, and I haven't decided if that is convenient or not. I guess when the run is feeling kind of rough going stoplight to stoplight and getting a 20 second break while you wait for the light to change is kind of nice. My left knee was kind of tweaked after Monday's run, but today seemed ok. It got a little tweaked mid run but is ok now. I am wondering if it is because these two runs were mostly on sidewalk, and I haven't done that before. The nice thing about the sidewalks I did notice is that they are set far enough back that the driveways aren't sloping over them. Still they are concrete. Runnng different routes is kind of fun! And it is cool to decide I am going to run to the beach and back, and then do it.

When I started running I told myself I couldn't quit until I could run 30 minutes without stopping. Today I did that!
I ran from home this morning, because it was light, and also because the car got an owie this weekend and DH and I have to share the truck. This was cool because I was able to check my known mileage against my pedometer. Pedometer mileage 2.44. Actual mileage 3.16. So I definately need to calibrate again. My run was 39 minutes, 5 minute warm up, 4 minute cool down, and 30 minutes running.

So today I went chasing Monday's high. And I didn't find it, but I did run for 27 minutes without stopping, which is a new record. I think I could have pushed on and made 30 but I didn't. I don't know why. Maybe I was saving up to hit my goal, because I decided when I started running that I was not going to make any decisions about keeping going until I could run for 30 minutes wthout stopping. Here I am, nearly there. I think now that another runner's secret they don't tell you is that if you can run for 20 minutes without stopping, the rest is pretty much in your head. My pedometer says I did 2.27 miles. Sparkpeople route tracker says 2.5, and I accidentally deleted a waypoing while entering it. Sparkpeople also says that since it took 36 minutes that I was going about 4.1 mph. I'm pretty happy about that.

Since I have been pretty steadily turning in 20 minute intervals I decided today was the day to push by that by any amount I could. I made it to 22 minutes. And at that moment, when I had nearly completed my circuit and was nearly back at work, all the sudden there was magic. Suddenly breathing was easy, and running wasn't hard, and I felt like I could keep going....for how long I don't know, but I could have kept on. It was so cool! But I was nearly back at work, and I needed a cool down time and I have a full day, so I went back to work. My running friend says that is the famous runner's high kicking in. I can believe it, but usually it doesn't kick in until after I am done. Man, I've got to chase that again! Wednesday if I don't get rained out I am going to plan for longer.

It's the end of February and the weather here has been getting warmer. We are back in the 50s-60s for my runs in the morning now. Today I went running in shorts and without a fleece for the first time in months. One can begin to hope winter is over. I ran my new route again today. I went a little farther to compensate for the to an fro in the park. I did my 20 minutes but that was it. I have a feeling I have been slowly picking up my pace without knowing it. I will have to keep monitoring. I have a couple good weeks of turning in 20 minute intervals now I think, and I want that to start increasing again. That or I guess I could work on faster.
