I listen to a lot of podcasts. One of the ones I like for general healthy living is located at . They are very practical and educational, and frequently they make reference to Sparkpeople. In fact the most recent podcast has an interview with someone who is a Sparker.

The podcast has had a hiatus because one of the hosts has been ill, and not ready to come back yet. However, the other has a new co-host, and is back again.

I am sure many of my friends here and their friends would enjoy the podcast - hence the 'advertisement'. (note the quotationmarks - I am not affiliated with them)

A couple of interesting quotes

Sunday, February 17, 2013

I belong to a few mailing lists related to health, and came across these two quotes this morning.

"People are fed by the food industry, which pays no attention to health & are treated by the health industry which pays no attention to food. " Mark Hyman MD

The second quote has a link to an article inside it. The article was published in BMJ (British medical journal).

Sugar is addictive & makes us fat. But why is the British Dietetic Assoc. denying this?Industry influence?

And, While I am at it “Take care of your body, it’s the only place you have to live.” -- Jim Rohn

Senior Olympics 2013 (Cleveland Ohio)

Saturday, December 29, 2012

"The National Senior Games or "Senior Olympics" is a sports competition for seniors from the United States. It is a multi-sport event specifically devoted to adults aged 50+ (events are divided into age groups with five years interval). It is composed of regional competitions held yearly in all American states. Every two years a nationwide event is held in one state (the National Senior Olympics).

The first Senior Olympics took place in 1987 and attracted 2,500 people. Recent attendance (Louisville, 2007) had over 10,000 competitors and 20,000 spectators, with oldest competitors being over 100 years old." (from Wikipedia)

Next year (2013) the Senior Olympics will be in Cleveland, OH. I know at least three people who will compete. One is a time trialist (cycling) and two are triathlon. If you are close check out this link

If you are older than 50, you might want to check in to the criteria to qualify for the next Senior Olympics (Twin Cities 2015)

Tools and toys for work out.

Wednesday, December 26, 2012

So, this was christmas, and Santa stopped my my stocking and dropped a few things.

the first thing I opened (and I can't wait to acutally use it) is called Waterfi It is an iPod shuffle - it is coated so you can swim with it. I am sure that will make the laps a lot less boring.

Then I opened a slightly bigger package - A Garmin 910XT .... a garmin for swimming biking and running - awesome (Thanks Santa - glad you got hints from my DW). I am sure I will look like a gadget geek next time I am in the pool.

These gadgets would be useless without ways to download the data and analyze it. I am not sure which one I like the best. I have two. One is I subscribe to mapmyfitness and the other is Digifit ... I am actually using both There are things about both I like and use. I particularly like the graphing the heart rate zones and the audio prompting of the zones it is an iPhone/Android compatiple program.

These will now be my tools of the trade - and I will write an update once I get comfortable with all of them.

The Waterfi sounds very cool! The distraction while doing laps would be great.
