Sunday afternoon with family

Yesterday, Sunday, was a beautiful day, here in central New York. Warm, breezy and sunny.
So, the whole family decided to go to Onondaga Parkway...a park where there are walking/jogging trails, biking trails, playgrounds for all ages.
So after church we all met at the kid's playground, so the grandkids could go "wild".
My youngest grandchild, Asher, was asleep in the stroller, so I took advantage of his napping, and took him for a 2.25 mile walk. A way to get my exercise in for the day.

So I am blogging about sugar....

I grew up having dessert after dinner. A dessert in my lunchbox. Sweet cereals for breakfast...You know...Captain Crunch, Lucky Charms, Cheerios with sugar sprinkled on top.
Needless to say, sugar has been a big part of my life.

Well, I joined this 4 week challenge...Tame your sweet tooth. I am now writing about my cravings for sugar.
I tend to want sugar most when tired, which can be most of the time for me, since I never get an 8 hour rest unless it is drug induced. Usually around 2pm and 8pm are my worst times for wanting a sugary treat.

So my progress for this week for the most part has been good. I had a rice pudding on Tuesday...which actually tasted pretty awful. I've had a couple of mocha coffees... I probably won't ever drink my coffee without sugar or flavoring. But I am trying to cut back on my coffee intake also.
I am pleased that I was able to turn down a few desserts offered to me...that definitely is progress! I have a package of chocolate chip cookies sitting on my kitchen counter...they don't even appeal to me.

My next goal is to cut down on foods I eat, that have sugar in them already, such as granola bars, cereals, yogurts.

I already have notice a difference in the way I feel...not so sluggish, not craving the sugary foods as much. I am pleased with the small progress I am making.

I don't think that I will ever be a totally sugar free person...I think a treat once in awhile is good. But my goal is to replace sugary foods with healthy foods.

    Great job! It's amazing how much satisfaction we can find without sugar, isn't it? I haven't done a complete sugar detox but with trying to fit in all of the good stuff, it has squeezed out the sugar and I now go days without sugar. Even when I have it, it is bite size portions and I'm happy. Amazing! I'm like you, I don't find a need to completely give up sugar but I love the freedom of not being obsessed with it. :)

  Karen - emoticon emoticon I don't think I will ever be 100% sugar free either, and I agree a treat once in awhile is good. It's funny when you mention growing up with desserts after meals and eating the sugary cereals or adding sugar to them. I can still remember my gr grandmother always having a cake baked just in case company came. Remember Sugar Smacks? I used to eat that one as a kid and thinking about doing it now makes my teeth hurt just thinking about it! You have me considering joining the challenge ...

    Karen you are doing yourself a good thing. emoticonI went on a sugar fast for 21 days. It was not always easy as you probably notice too. What it did do was cut the craving, as I always wanted sweets, after meals, during the day, and now I can have control of when and where I allow them. As Laura said so well, the fresh fruits are so available, here in Oregon too. All that rain produces juicy fruits. emoticon emoticon emoticonElaine

I am maintaining my "dessert free" lifestyle...as you know. My planned indulgence will be my birthday in June. I skip Easter & Mother's Day....but I won't feel deprived. Lol!
How could I with the plenteous amount of fresh swet fruit we have here in the Lone Star state.

Riding my new bike...

I am just going to start out saying...this was a big deal for me today!

First of all, I haven't rode a bike, since being a teenager...I am now 51 years old.
Second, I have never ridden a bike with hand brakes or gears. I always owned the "old fashioned" type of bike.
Third, my new bike is a road bike...lighter than any bike I have ever rode.

So, today being sunny and 60' ; my husband and I decided, to take a ride along Onondaga Lake. We ended up doing 13 miles, took us 64 minutes. Well, I know that is slow for most bikers, was slow for my husband...but I was very pleased with the time.
Not only were we fighting alot of head wind, but we were dodging other bikers, moms with strollers, little kids on bikes, joggers, dogs and skaters. So, I am very pleased.

Got to get more confident on sharp turns and stopping. We even did some sprints.
Overall, I enjoyed it and am looking forward to my next ride.

    it is nice to have someone to ride with, especially when there are emoticon chasing you. that's one of the main issues I have with riding on open roads. thankfully the hubby sacrifices himself for my safety! LOL!

he is happy though when he goes about 16.5mph for minutes beyond my imagination. i'm happy to go 10mph, so i understand going slow! happy Riding!!

    I am jealous. I want a new bike. however I am happy for you too. I think I am going to take my bike out on Saturday as it is supposed to be in the 60's I am hoping to make a 12 mile loop which should take me 70 minutes. I don't ride an ultra light road bike though. I have a moderate 7 speed cruiser.

Well, I've decided to share some of my bad eating habits!

I am not a salty snack person, but I am a sweet snacker. Not just any sweets, though. I am not an ice cream or cake or pie or candy snacker. There are only two exceptions to the previous sentence.....

M&M candies

and pumpkin pie

I like cookies, all types of cookies....My absolute favorite though, Chocolate Chip cookies!

Another big indulgence...are what I call "FooFoo coffees".

Last but not least, which I am ashamed to admit, that I eat, is brownie mix. This is a last resort, to finding no other chocolate, in the house! emoticon

So, why is it, that these, just seem to call out to me, on a daily basis? And it isn't like I just have one cookie or one piece of pie....I " have" to have more than one helping.
I've tried not buying them and not having them in the house...Yeah, well...that lasts about two days. Then I find myself driving through McDonald's ordering a frappe!
So much for self-control and will power!!!!

I would like to hear, how you deal with food temptations, and how you have victory, in the self-control / will power area.

    Keep trying - I agree with Laura, that the best way to stop is not to start. I have phases where I can eat just two cookies, or one of my homemade granola bars (healthy but sweet!) and others when I just KNOW that I can't have them in the house. So I don't buy them. I also fall into thought patterns sometimes that I know are not healthy. I don't think those struggles will ever be over completely - it's part of this life journey we're on to face temptations. But we do our best not to put the temptations in our own paths, right? Good weekend!

Doesn't cookie dough taste just as good if not better than the cooked alternative!
I am finding myself eating alot of sweet stuff at the moment. I really can't figure it. I'm eating more than normal. I wonder if I'm trying to replace sweets for my real craving...salty. I'm really fighting the desire to go out and buy potato crisps at the moment.I don't know how much longer I can last....meanshile, back on the farm, I'm eating every sweet thing in sight and eating too much of it. I still have some left over cookies that I'm gradually getting through but my real downfall at the moment is my homemade granola and yoghurt....but that's healthy you may say....not when I eat 2 cupfuls and smoother it under half my yoghurt mix. I finished it last night so who knows what equally poor choices I'll make tonight.
I wish I had the answers but I don't. Up until recently I would have said just don't start, brush your teeth, drink more water, all of which worked and worked well but now they are not doing it for me. The voice of conscience inside my head telling me to eat is drowning out the one telling me not to.
I'll keep looking for the responses to see if anyone can help the both of us on this. I'm hoping that it was just February being a bad month and things will turn around this month.

    I have the same problem with sweets. I've never eaten brownie mix before. I usually make my brownies from scratch (maybe that's a good thing?). I try not to have them in the house but when my husband asks for something I'll end up eating several cookies or brownies, or whatever. I haven't learned to eat my sweets in moderation. If you figure out how to do that, let me know.

    I laughed and moaned at this! Those pictures...I so relate! I, too, have eaten brownie mix before. What's up with that?? LOL

This time around, my sweet tooth has greatly diminished. As I've actively pursued adding 7 -9 servings of veggies and fruits to my food intake, I'm finding myself more full and now I crave fruit instead of chocolate all of the time. Go figure! Actually, I've been relying on the replacement principle found in the Scriptures. God never says only the negative. There is always something good to do instead of something we shouldn't do. With that, I'm replacing most of the gunk I used to eat with the good stuff. The longer I've done it, the more my cravings for those old things are disappearing.

I've been saving about 130 calories for the end of the day that I can "play" with. With that, if I am craving chocolate, I can eat 2 choco chip cookies or 2 oreos with 3 tbs of cool whip, or ...something like that. I put it on a plate or in a bowl and sit down, relax, and enjoy that little bit of chocolate with a big glass of water.

So far, so good.
Thanks for being transparent. We all think we do goofy things, then we discover that a lot of us do the same goofy stuff! ha! The Lord knows we are frail as dust, as the Psalmist says. Surely He will have mercy and grace for us as we boldly go before His Throne! Praying that you will find the suggestions or insight that you are seeking through responses to this blog and His Word.

You can do this through Him!

  Hi Karen,

I personally struggled with eating sweet treats after putting our son down each night with my husband when we sat down to watch TV and "chill" for a bit before bed. It was when I did my Daniel Fast between Feb 6 and Feb 26 that I was finally able to change that. Eliminating sugar and processed things helped me to crave healthy foods instead of junk - we crave what we eat! I've also been reading and doing the Made To Crave study. Learning the truth behind us being made to crave God not food and what God has to say about food in the Bible is honestly what is keeping my flesh from indulging as I used to. That, and the progress that thanks to God I have made this month. I know I will still struggle as I am human and sometimes we want what we want. Now that I know differently it is helping to make those choices the exception, not the rule. Praying for you! Please let me know how else I can support you!

    Oh Karen! LOL!! I totally relate - it's tootsie roll midgies, choc chips and yes, you just had to post that Scrumptious pic of my Favorite cookie! LOL!! Yes, I too cannot...I repeat - Cannot eat just one.
So, I simply do NOT start. I cannot - or I am in for it. I know this and accept this about myself. I don't feel guilty. On the contrary, I am freed to create a Plan and stick to it.

I know you probably saw my blog ( 6 days ago, "confessions"...) I am on day 7 today of "No Sweets"....due to the sticky sweet fingers I have. I don't binge, BUT I seem to think I need a "little" something sweet after a meal DAILY! Help! Lol!

So what works for me, is weaning myself from "sweets"...meaning ALL desserts, and it takes 21 consecutive days to break a habit. I will break it - I have done it before. It is hard, but can be done. You go through sugar withdrawals the first week....but today I can honestly say, I am not struggling. Yay!

Karen, I love it that you blogged about this, and I KNOW you will find what works for you...you are an Overcomer, my friend!

My Major Motivations.....This is a blog to post my motivators complete with pictures.

Personal Appearance: I want to:

•Firm up what I have...

Health & Fitness: I want to:

•Have more energy.

•Run or walk a 5k, marathon, triathlon or other race.

•Feel and be stronger

Friends, Family and Social Life: I want to:

•Stick around to see my grandkids grow up. I want to be active with my grandchildren. Play ball with them, go hiking with them, be involved with the activities that they enjoy.

*Be more active with my spouse. We enjoy hiking, walking, cross-country skiing, biking, kayaking to name a few.

Everyday Signs and Situations: I want to:

•Be more confident in myself, with better self esteem.

•Relax around other people and be myself.

•Prove to myself that I can do it.
