2012 Month by Month: May/June

Finished a very productive month as far as fitness goes: took in 14 fitness classes and 8 yoga classes in May. Also walked 14 times, but a lot of those were quite short.

I signed up for the free month at Curves that was advertised here on SP, so that is what I will do for June. (Kind of amazed that the offer also worked in Canada for once!) I've never tried them before, but I think their circuits don't take as much time as my fitness classes, so I may get more chance to do longer walks again.

    Sounds like a good fitness plan. I haven't got brave enough to try the gyms yet, or maybe it's just that with a video or a walk, I can be done with my work out in the time it would take me to get to the gym and back.

Confessions of an Aging Gym Rat

Couldn't resist the gym rat terminology, never having been such a thing in my life! After my free week at the local fitness center I have signed on for the month of May. It's much cheaper to sign for longer, but I don't quite trust myself yet to keep going, especially in summer.

I am hurting today, but I suppose in a good way. Yesterday's fitness class was mostly strength training & my glutes & thighs know it! I went to 7 classes this week -- 2 were yoga and 1 was a Zumba Gold. I had never done zumba & may not again: (a) gold was aimed at older/more out of shape people so was too easy and (b) it was kind of boring. I love to dance, but preferably with a partner. Plus (c) I'm not fond of complicated choreography in my fitness routine. KISS works for me.

That said, I really enjoyed the other classes. It's a smaller place & everyone seems friendly & helpful. Class sizes ranged from maybe 18 down to an unusual 6 in Friday's yoga, so it's pretty easy to keep an eye on the instructor. I haven't had time or energy to try any of the cardio or strength machines yet. Heavier free weights is probably all I need to add, eventually. Obviously for the near future the classes are enough and I need the weekends off for recovery.

I am surprised not only by how alive & good it makes me feel (I anticipated that) but also by how it has already changed my eating patterns. I'm hardly ever craving junk but rather healthy foods! Weird, and I hope it lasts!

The only downside is that my morning walks have disappeared -- classes are 9 a.m. My friend won't walk before then & I'm not really up for it after. Hopefully I will get used to the classes soon & want my walk too; I miss the fresh air.

A big thank you to Spark friends who have left encouraging likes & comments on my feed along the way! Fingers crossed for the rest of the month.

    Hi Abby,
Good for you taking fitness classes. I hope you take it easy while your muscles learn new moves. Walking is fun, but what you are doing is a lot more challenging.

    Your explanation of not liking complicated choreography really hit it on the nail for my experience with Zumba too. It sounds like you are having a fun time trying some new things at the gym.

My year's membership at Canada Games Centre is just about up and I can chalk this up as another "donation" to a gym...going back several years now. It was wise of you to just sign up for one month. Not that you won't go after that but we tend to beat ourselves up if we sign for a year and then start missing. Then the "all or nothing" attitude sets in..."I haven't gone for two weeks so I might as well give up."
My Elderobics is mostly working but with regular mornings when I feel I can't get started early enough so I cancel. Thank heavens I'm not doing an all-or-nothing with that!

I was very excited about starting nordic walking but now have let too many days slip by. Hopefully I'll get out today as it's very beautiful out.

Hope you didn't hurt any muscles. I've been going through terrible muscle aches and pains so...be careful!

    Good for you! It's hard to get into the habit of exercising, but I hope it's one that frows on you. As we get older, we advance quickly into the Use It Or Lose It territory, & it's easier if you've already got the habit.

2012 Month by Month: March/April

Walked 20/29 days in Feb, but the food recording bit the dust really fast, alas.
Walked 19 days in March plus kayaked 2 other days. And so far, 3/4 days walking in April.

This month I've started using a heart rate monitor to make sure I'm not just strolling for nothing, which will likely speed me up a bit. The friend I walk with is not so keen to work hard (has some medical problems), so we'll see how that works out, though our pace hasn't been bad--certainly we arrive home in a sweat. Today I was alone & got through my 3.52 km (2.2 miles) several minutes faster than usual. I did toss in a couple of running intervals, which I may be able to do while walking with my friend--run out ahead & then back to her or something.

Anyway, walking through way below freezing temps and snow should be behind us. It's great to see spring! I won't ruin the moment by mentioning black flies ... oops, did I say that out loud? ;-)

Best wishes to everyone for keeping on with the exercise program -- if we want our health & strength to last as long as we do, exercise is a must!

2012 Month by Month: January/February

January let me kick my walking into higher gear. I walked 26 out of 31 days and covered 52.5 miles/84.5 km, not bad in all sorts of winter weather!

For February I fear I must start recording my food again, which I haven't done in a long while. I do find it useful, but also somewhat tedious. But at least this is a short month, even if it is leap year. And I have to cut the carbs & up the freggies, as usual. Winter is a tough time to cut carbs; I spend a lot of time sitting & reading & wanting mindless snacks. I'll have to work on having prepared veggies ready for when I need that crunch. If it turns out as well as January I will be happy.

p.s. Of course the walking continues ... had my 45 minutes/3.5 kms this morning to start the month right. This might sound slow, but it's up & down hills on snow covered roadsides.

Yeah, I hear ya on needing to track our food. I just quit doing it. And agree with you that it feels tedious. However, I do (half of the time) keep track of it in a mini-spiral notebook. If I turn it in at my weekly TOPS meetings, I get credit. But I'm not recording calories...
