Dealing with a Sparkpeople Addiction

Tuesday, February 19, 2013

The idea that engaging in a wholesome, healthy activity can be an addiction is new to me, but during this lenten season, it has become apparent to me that sparking, in particular racking up spark points, has become an unhealthy obsession for me. Sad to say, I often find myself sparking early in the morning before I even pray or engage in my daily bible reading. It is clear that for this Sparker, changes are needed. For that reason, I will be taking a break from Sparkpeople during the Lenten period. While I will check in from time to time, sparking can no longer play such a time consuming part of my life. Hopefully, in a few weeks, I will learn to be more balanced in my approach to sparking.

I know just what you mean. It can take up quite some time.

I know exactly what you mean - and have limited my computer time accordingly. I find it helpful to keep a notebook (I have one on the go as a sleep journal which I use for this as well) of things I've done, so that I can add them to my tracker later, and that has helped a little. I also know myself ; new things totally absorb me for a while - but it does calm down! I recently limited myself to only going on Twitter three days a week because that was becoming a bit of an obsession too!
Enjoy your Lenten-time - and hope you find the middle way with this.

I have been there. It is hard to have balance in this, but to truly have a healthy life we need to be active. That means not spending an excessive amount of time sitting in front of a computer.

Balance in all things...

Staying motivated to pursue a vegan lifestyle

Friday, March 09, 2012

After months of week long visits with relatives a friends, I found myself being tempted more and more to stray from the vegan lifestyle I had decided to embrace. However, a recent e-mail from John McDougall with a link to a recent lecture presented at his advanced study week seminar in February of this year came in the nick of time for me. This hour long you tube entry by Melanie Joy strengthened my resolve to get squarely back on track. The entry, entitled Carnism - The Psychology of Eating Meat can be viewed at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vWbV9FPo_Q or can be found by simply googling Carnism Psychology of eating meat you tube.
I sent a link to my relatives and friends who bug me about pursuing a vegan lifestyle.

You are right about the golden retriever meat part being gross. In fact, I really should have included a warning or word of caution that parts of the video are really not meant for the very sensitive or faint of heart.
